He can keep up with a football game, but basketball has passed him by.

This is accurate. Not trying to knock the Dolph but I think a new basketball PBP man whose sole focus is basketball would be a smart thing. I think it would help Bobby Hansen also. Dolph is hard to listen to on the basketball. He is ok on football because of the relationship he has with Eddie on air works.
Hassel has broadcast college bball for ESPN I know, not sure if the U of I would give him a look though.
I just hope whomever it would be in the future doesn't yell at you the whole time like Walters does for ISU...man he is over the top.

I think Hassel has while he was at ESPN. Maybe not football but he was doing hoops for sure I think. Long is a color guy he's not play by play material. If Dolph retired now I'd be perfectly ok with that. He was ok when I was about 12. Now I can't stand him... Just a preference but I went from listening to games on the radio all the time as a kid and teenager to now I'll watch it on TV cause I can't stand how Dolph calls games.

Hassle did some hoops games.......they were low level games, but he did do some.

If anyone is familiar with Protivin, Iowa. When I balled at WSR, we had a guy from there by the name of Ron Novatny....play by play for KWAY radio.. .best quote was " The last time WSR scored, Mobey Dick was a minnow", swear to God on a stack of bibles

Sorry just had to...

Hawk fb and bball are big time gigs. Has Chris Hassel even called a college game? Chuck Long has been an analyst which is way different than filling all the air time between plays etc. Long would certainly be a good NAME. I agree that Dolph is getting a little off on his play by play. Maybe need to have Dolph have the occasional head cold so they can try out some new blood.

Ya gotta understand their are play by play and color roles. Long is a color guy. Hassle has been working play by play for tv. Having some minimal radio experience calling some high school games, play by play is much tougher than color. There's a difference between making a few commmets in between plays and getting in and out of brakes as well as interviews. On top of all that you have all the sponsors.

I'd be all for giving Hassel a shot in the future but I'm also not in a rush to get rid of Dolph.
