I dont like the preseason love Iowa is getting

It seems like ESPN and Rivals.com is giving Iowa waaayy to much preseason hype. #1 Defensive Line? I'm okay with that. #1 team with best chances to win a National Title? What?! I'm a little heisitant with that. #1 Special Teams?! Oh god, Ryan Donahue is a beast at punter, but Murray? I get scared to see him kick past 25 yds, not to mention the missed 22 yd FG that could have won us the OSU game. #1 Secondary? With the departure of Amari,we have questions at corner. I'd say top 10 but number #1? No. With all this preseason hype a 9-3 season would be a HUGE letdown.
Also these are NATIONAL RANKS not just BIG TEN:confused:

We're going to need a ranking to get somewhere, IF and thats a big IF we do go undefeated we cant get into the MNC game without ranking or hype, so let them hype us up.

Remember, football is a game. Games are intended to be enjoyed. So enjoy the hype; it's part of the fun of this football season. Don't let your personal gremlins soil the fun. And as the season unfolds, it is what it is. It might be amazing! Or not.

I'm loving the hype that the team is getting. They have earned the respect from the media and they should enjoy it. I think the Captain and Co. knows how to handle it now. There is a thing in life called success and when you strive to succeed you have high expectations to perform and at a higher level. I don't think the staff will allow them to settle for anything. Just take a look at the summer work outs Doyle put these guys through. The Seniors have been around through some tough times and they know how to succeed. I don't think they let the team down this year. These are GREAT times to be a fan of a program that has nothing but the sky for limits.

GO HAWKS BREAK THE ROCK!

Personally I would take 9-3 and Cap One or Outback Bowl right now with a chance to finish at 10-3 and probably ranked in the top 12.

Really? There's no way in hell I would take a 9-3 record and trip to the Outback Bowl now. This team has the potential to do great things, they won 11 games last year, you bring back this much talent from an 11 win, Orange Bowl Champion team and I don't see how you can't view 9-3 as a letdown.

I don't get why some people seem happy to just be a slightly above average team. We've had four top ten finishes in the last eight years, there's only a few schools in the country with more. I think we have a chance to be undefeated, so yeah 9-3 will be a big letdown to me, but it's also a sign the program is moving in the right direction.

People here will never be happy, either we get no respect and people are upset or we're ranked to high, and people are scared. I wish we were preseason number one. Grow some balls people, embrace the hype and enjoy being ranked high.

+1 hoff,
This year's hype definately has a different feel from the 2005 pre-season buzz. Ferentz, I think now knows how to handle the expectations and keep his players in line and focused. Ferentz will go to Arizona and win this year. I am sure he's learned what not to do (i.e. 2004 ASU). Furthermore, he won't slip to an underdog team on the road, including Michigan. Not only that, this man knows how to get his team fired up to protect the home turf. This has all the spellings of a NC year. Fingers crossed for the O-Line to gel quickly! 16 days 2 hrs 53mins away!!!

This is a great article from a couple weeks ago at bhgp.

I think it sums up well that if we want to see Hawkeye football on the national scene year in, year out, expectations are part of the deal. Perhaps we, as a fanbase, are going through some growing pains with the program. I think many of us fear that time when the program takes a dip again.
But who cares? We'll bounce back again.

With this team, if everyone stays healthy 9-3 would be a let down. We're simply the most talented team in 11 of 12 games, and I'm not sure we're not pretty close in that 12th game.

I put in bold a very important word.

Iowa has won 10+ games like 5 or 6 times in their history, we also have a chance to go 6-6. What happens if McNutt drops that pass at MSU, or Iowa doesn't block that 2nd FG against UNI, just those two plays could have resulted in an 8-4 season and a trip to Tampa and no one is talking about going 12-0 this year.

I want Iowa to go 12-0 as well, but I'm not setting myself up for the disappointment if and when they lose for the first time (I will be disappointed but not like some of you will be) when history tells me they are more likely to have an 8-4/9-3 season as compared to an 11-1 or 12-0.

So yeah I would sign up for 9-3 right now and not take the chance on 6-6 even though it could be 12-0/11-1.

so if someone offered you this scenario...you can take 9-3 right now and a trip to tampa no questions asked...or you can have a 25% chance of going 12-0 with a 75% chance of going 6-6...right now you'd take 9-3 no questions asked?

that boggles my mind

Iowa has won 10+ games four out of the last 8 years. Not being disappointed with a 9 wins this year is like settling for a below average year based on the recent past.

I would take 9-3 in a heartbeat. Actually, that's the record I predicted. I think we have the talent to have a better season than that possibly. But the truth is that we do have some question marks with this team and we do play some talented schools. Still, I love the preseason hype. Everyone should. This is what should be expected with the money we have been putting into this program.

I just don't see how people can be disappointed with 9-3. Heck, one year we finished 8th in the nation with 3 losses. Some of you are sounding like Nebraska fans with this attitude.

Bring on the hype. This almost seems like a 2nd chance for the Hawkeye program to break out of the 2nd tier in the conference to the 1st tier. I thought that was going to happen in 05 but the bounces didn't go there way that year. However that team did do enough to earn a little hype coming into 06 entering the season at #17 working there way up to #13 before the wheels came off and the team entered a two year funk. Now the Hawks back knocking on the door and people outside of Iowa are paying attention again. Hopefully this time we see different results.

This topic is loser talk. Im sick of being the plucky underdog. We are the big dog this year and I love it, bring on everbody's best shot. NC baby, anyone who says differently is just afraid of getting heat if we get upset. We took that underdog bull**** and stuffed it down the GT players' throats in the Orange Bowl, time to go win a NC.

9-3 is fun and respectable, but also very achievable. 12-0 is special. 12-0 is territory we haven't been to. So if I have a 25% chance to have the season of a lifetime I'm taking it.

Question: Has anybody actually been offered a guaranteed record for the hawkeyes by some sort of genie or god of some sort?

OH MY GOD THE MEDIA IS HYPING UP THE HAWKEYES!!! WHAT IRRESPONSIBLE JERKS!!! DON'T THEY KNOW WE CAN'T LIVE UP TO THE HYPE??? I'M SO SCARED OF SUCCESS, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE IT!!!

Seriously? People complain that when we are underrated that the media doesn't know what they are talking about. Then when they give us love, they are setting us up for a letdown. Grow up. Pretty much every Hawk fan I know had high expectations before the hype machine started, and guess what, I'm sure the team does too. You guys would be complaining if it was Wisconsin getting this kind of hype because we deserved it more than them, but the second we get it, some of you start crying like little girls. If you truly want the program to get to the next level, you'd better get used to high expectations every year. That means that we are winning consistently. I, for one, absolutely love it

I would hate more than anything for iowa to finish a dream undefeated season that may only come around once in a lifetime, and for the Hawks to be standing on the outside looking in simply because they lacked the preseason hype.

Other than 05, you have to go back to 1997 to find this much hype, so it's not like a common occurance as you make it out to be, you also need to remember that the 05 team didn't have a D like the one the 2010 team will have either.

From what my dad tells me, there hasn't been THIS much hype and anticipation for an Iowa season since '85. 2005 was big, but it was nothing compared to this.

I agree with your dad. I think 85 may have even been a little more hyped simply because of Chuck Long being regarded as potentially the best player in football going into the season. That team played well with a target on their back all season. Short of that one rainy trap at Columbus, they lived up to the hype.
