Hubbard?

What the heck are you talking about?

My concern isn't that we should be concerned about him, but that he should be concerned about coming to the fishbowl that is IC. Also, at 25, this guy is playing for a college education and future career. Might be better to go somewhere where the job opportunities are a little more abundant.

Basketball wise, Iowa would be a great option. Just don't know if it is the right life choice.

He doesn't have to live in Iowa City his entire life. He would have the opportunity to get a degree from a Big 10 school, which would suit him well wherever he wants to live. A huge amount of UI graduates end up not living/working in Iowa City or even Iowa when they graduate.

What "fishbowl" is there in Iowa City that he would have to worry about? Players here can live their lives pretty anonymously as long as they aren't getting into trouble. Lincoln, NE, is less of a fishbowl than Iowa City?

Who exactly do you want to fill out this class? All I ever see from you is the negatives about players and our recruiting.

Who do you want?

Have to agree with Section here. In case you haven't noticed, we aren't knocking recruits away with sticks presently. Looking back at Iowa hoops, Pierre Pierce is the only bad operator I can think of yet, fans cast every kid with a hint of trouble in his background in the same light.

IMO, this is exactly where Hubbard needs to be because McCaffrey is the kind of coach that will push this kid to excel on and off the court. We aren't ultra-talented, but I think we have some really good kids on the team who will embrace having a more mature, veteran on the team.

CAAR, you need an anti-depressant. You've got to cheer up, man. If you keep looking at the negative in everything, you'll definitely find it.

Buck up camper!

For basketball... yes. Much less, actually as most Nebraskans don't even talk about their BB team, let alone go to the games.

I live in Lincoln and it truly is all about Football, even when Nebraska BB beats a ranked foe. You may have one day of coverage, but after that, it is back to stories about FB.

IMHO, Iowa is much more balanced when it comes to the Fishbowl.

Iowa City IS an intense Fishbowl. Ask George Raveling and Lute about it. They both mentioned that aspect. In fact, coaching prospects have stated that they called both of these guys to discuss that aspect. There are bigger programs, but IC is unique in the size of the community and the integration with the community. You cannot be anonymous in IC if you are an athlete. Lincoln has 260,000 people. They are rabid Husker football fans, but they are diluted compared to the 70,000 in Iowa City. The Metro in Lincoln is 320,000. IC's metro is 150,000.

People keep thinking I am saying I wouldn't want Hubbard, or that Hubbard wouldn't be a good basketball recruit. This isn't what I am saying. I am suggesting that other factors might be in play that a 25 year old, ex-con, might take into effect before choosing to move to IC for his college experience. One of these factors might be that he will clearly NOT be anonymous in IC. When he would have greater anonymity at other options, such as Rutgers. Also, the immediate job market he will be connecting with in IC is limited, so he will likely have to cultivate opportunities elsewhere, which might be more difficult for someone with his background to do at distance.

Seriously people, think beyond winning basketball games and use your critical thinking skills. This argument isn't hard to understand.

Now, all this being said. If he does come to IC, he will be embraced by the community, which can be a pretty awesome thing.

"fishbowl" is not why George left!

"fishbowl" is not why George left!

Thank you. Just because Lute Olson lists that as a reason why he left doesn't mean there is something unique about Iowa City. First off, Lute's list of reasons for leaving were long(but it all ends with the Mrs. not being happy). Second, I've lived in Madison, and I can tell you first hand that their athletes on the street are as easily recognized as they are in Iowa City. The players and coaches are just as much under the microscope there as they are here.

Besides, I've never met a single player that complained about living in the Iowa City "fishbowl". Heck most kids probably embrace it.

Isn't nearly every college campus a 'fishbowl' nowadays with all the media attention, msg boards, twitter, facebook, etc; multimedia available in an instant via smartphones?

I mean the second something happens, someone can blast it off from their cellphone to a lot of people....

To be fair though, most kids don't have Hubbard's past. I could certainly understand why he might want to avoid being under that kind of scrutiny.

This isn't intended to be a blast at anyone that hasn't lived outside of Iowa, but I do think you gain a better perspective on college sports when you have. I lived in KC for 10 years, which is the Bermuda Triangle for KU, Mizzou and K-State. Lawrence is the definition of a fish bowl, as is Manhattan and Columbia. Fans flip out because John Quarterback was seen chugging a beer at a frat party and Freddie Forward was seen in a Corvette with an older man (couldn't be his dad, had to be an agent right).

All this ******** and moaning about "Mr. Davis got screwed" and "this is karma for running Lute off" is totally absurd. At some point we all need to live in the present not the past with this stuf.f Trying to link the Lickliter debacle to some Iowa City merchant not giving Lute free fries 25 years ago causing him to head to AZ is N U T S.

Oh I agree. But he is going to face scrutiny wherever he ends up. Of his choices, I don't really see a place where he will be able just to fade into the background without his past being brought up.

Rutgers is probably his best option in that regard. Small fanbase to begin with, in a state/region that is VERY pro sports-oriented. Rutgers is an afterthought in the NY/NJ area.

I understand the thought process here, but to me its kind of a loser's mentality. I would think that any kid who wants to succeed and go places in life isn't making big decisions ranked on "best place I can go unnoticed and disappear" as his top priority...

Good call. The notion that this individual wants to go to the place where he will get the least attention is absurd. Remember, he showed up on campus with a star shaved into his head.

We should take this guy all day long. Frankly, I love the thought of him in a game battling 19 year old kids. There is not a chance in the world this guy gets intimidated by anyone in the Big Ten after what he's been through. In fact, this team needs a little moxy and the Hawkeyes' very own Ricky Vaughn could be just what the doctor ordered.

The trash talking would be epic.

That said, if he screws up at all, he's toast.

Not sure if this is correct but I believe Hubbard is set to announce on April 23rd.

Yes, he intends on signing his LOI on that day.

Also, as a high school senior, I would be very intimidated going up against a 25 year old ex-con as a Freshman basketball player at any level. I would like to see him in black and gold come April 23.

Couldn't agree more. Outside of Cole and Cartwright, nobody really wanted the pressure on their shoulders last year. Gatens just isn't going to be "that guy" and we need somebody in the huddle to instill some confidence in the younger kids. I am not trying to build Hubbard up to be our version of Patton, but I don't think playing in Madison is going to rattle him.

We need this guy. Plain and simple. Now that Nebraska got a similar commit the other night to Hubbard I think our chances went up. If Fran is on him like I think he is, coupled with the fact he was courtside for our upset of Purdue, I just have a good feeling we can get him.
