Hubbard starting?

2/3 felons are rearrested after their stint in prison. This is a risk. I have no problem with Fran taking this risk if he thinks Hubbard can stay on the straight and narrow. However, all the garbage about other schools being "Transfer U" and "Thug U" need to end. Us taking Hubbard makes most these other schools look like choir boys.

40% within 3 years. It's been 8 years since the crime and 4 years since his release. Do you guys really think he's made it this far, and now he's going to throw it all away? He's had to work extremely hard on and off the court for this. I for one have no reservations on Anthony joining the team. If Fran believes in this man, so do I.

I would bet the risk of recidivism is much lower after said person goes through two years of college and has been active in a sport while in college.

You don't bring in Juco players with 2 years of elegibility to be off the bench role players. He's our starting wing next year and our lineup (based on who's on the roster today) will be..

Cartwright
Gatens
Hubbard
Basabe
Brommer

I see this lineup being very likely with a possibility of White eventually beating out Brommer due to his scoring skills with the outside shot which we will need desperately. Remember this past year Neither Gatens or Cartwright were scorching the nets from three point land and we have been told that Hubbard isn't particularily good at three point land. You look at that line up and you got say man where is our three point shooter out of those five. I know some are thinking Hubbard will cause a defense to sag on him which will leave Gatens open for the three. The problem is we have seen Matt miss a lot of open three point shots. Remember that we are bringing in some shooters for a reason and I am sure Fran will be using them as much as possible. I've watched a replay of the win over Purdue at least three times and it catches my attention everytime when one of the broad castors says he has seen Oglesby(?) and that kid can really shoot the ball.

In my opinion the first game starters look like this:

Gatens
Basabe
Marble
Brommer
Cartwright
However expect to see Marble replaced often by Hubbard and eventually Hubbard becoming the starter before the season is over. I also would not be surprised to see white to have a lot of playing time for Brommer. To me the most explosive offense could be these five:

Basabe
White
Oglesby
Hubbard
Cartwright

hmmmmm? Now who recruited all those guys? All I know is this is going to be fun to watch this team racing up and down the floor and pressing more on defense now that Fran has got some horses! Now an atheletic BIG added to this fall's team would be a cherry on top!

As harsh as this reads, its pretty much stone cold reality. There is a reason why Hubbard has been given several scholarship offers and at some high major programs, and its not because he had a 3.2 gpa at the Juco level

I agree, infact if Iowa goes with two guards and three taller post players Cartwright may not have to worry about getting breathers. If they go with three guards and two post players then this could get interesting watching Cartwright and Hubbard breaking down defenses and dishing it out to Gatens for the three or passing it off to Basabe for the slam!!!

I would be willing to write these players down in pen with regards to the starting lineup:

Hubbard
Cartwright
Basabe
Gatens

Depending on how well forward plays the small forward position, Iowa will have some options. Stick another guard on the court and go 'small' if Hubbard can play 'big'. Need a shooter? Oglesby. Need a big? Brommer and Archie. Need a bit of both? Perhaps Aaron White...wanna run? Throw in Devyn Marble or Eric May and or others.

Hubbard is the kind of player that might be able to drastically increase the options available to the coach in how to play depending on the opponent. Again, were he just an average or 'good' Juco player, Iowa would not have taken a chance on him. He's a really good player.

This is spot on. I think that is why Hubbard was the one guy the Fran really wanted. He makes the team so much more flexible and gives Fran options. That is what I love about Fran, he will change game plans according to match-ups. He is willing to go "small" one night when needed, and then the next night play Brommer and Archie many more minutes because he needed a "big" presence inside that night. We will run, press, and play up-tempo much more consistently, as we have the depth now to do so.

Agree totally. I don't believe Fran would take that kind of chance recruiting an ex-con if he was just a so-so player. There are a lot of so-so players out there without criminal records.

For the record - I'm okay with Fran taking a chance or two like this given where our program has been the past several years. I really felt in my gut that he would have to roll the dice on a player or two as part of the rebuilding process.. The squeaky clean, blue-chip types of recruits aren't exactly knocking down our door wanting to play for us.

Barring another injury I think gatens shoots north of 40% from behind the arch this year, and if we get things really rolling he could shoot close to 45%.

Is anybody else with me and think that we are not going to see very much of Eric May this season?

There is a log jam at the 2/3 spots with Gatens, Hubbard, Marble and Oglesby. Is May only looking at a handful of minutes per game?

While that is true, there is also absolutely no depth at the four and five so I think we'll be seeing some very small lineups with Hubbard or even May or Gatens playing the four spot some times.

Mostly agree, but I think it will be Marble and not Brommer in there. Brommer is, at best a role player, he's not a big 10 starter.

Totally agree. I think the 5th guy will be Marble. (Brommer is not a big 10 player. Marble is better than May and McCabe.)

Eric May is superior to Devyn Marble in every thing except for ball handling, which isn't all that important at the three spot.

He's a better defender, a better shooter (from the field, arch, and line), he's better in transition, and he's at least a wash as a rebounder. I'm not sure what those of you who clearly place Marble ahead of him are thinking?

I think we are all expecting to see a huge improvement in Marble's game this offseason. He was a high school senior playing in the Big 10 last year (age wise).

I don't doubt that Marble can and will improve, but I also think May will as well. People didn't seem to notice but he considerably improved his shooting and his ball handling last year from his Freshman year. While it's 100% true that he didn't have an effective left hand last year, most people seem to forget he really didn't have a left or right hand as a freshman. He also improved his shooting considerably between his freshman and sophomore season.

Look for this team to run like crazy. Hubbard, Basabe both need to score at the basket. The best way for them to do this is to beat the other bigs down the court. The next options on the front line will be May who needs to beat his man down court as well, McCabe, who I think will develop an even more wily offensive game, and White who offers the best option to score just outside the paint. I expect Fran's scheme will be based on not letting the defense get set.
