Hubbard starting?

Why are so many people saying Hubbard will start next season? JC is a long way from the Big Ten. There are several players who could start ahead of him depending on their improvement.

i bet he doesnt make it longer than the summer... first week back on campus in August he'll get in trouble.

Fran isn't putting his neck on the line for a two year player to add depth behind a guy like May.

The expectation for Hubbard is to be a 2-year starter. Are we forgetting how weak Iowa is at the three, May isn't good at basketball, and Marble could be good off the bench.

As long as he stays out of the papers for the wrong reasons I'm all for him maybe leading the team, but if he goes back to his old ways kick him off the team.

You're an idiot, DaBears.

I debated whether I should call you a name or just say that was an idiotic comment and infer that you are an idiot. I decided I have no problem calling you a name on this venue based upon your comment. Your statement is based upon nothing that has happened in this guy's life over the last four years, but based upon what he was like eight years ago. In fact, you effectively thumbed your nose at everything he has accomplished in his life to turn it around.

I find it interesting how everyone always talks about how people in Iowa and the Midwest are giving, Christian people and how people are just better there than in other areas. Evidently allowing for second chances and giving the benefit of the doubt aren't included in those traits.

Either that or some people just don't fit that mold of being compassionate people willing to find the good in others.

Re: You're an idiot, DaBears.

didnt he just get in trouble within the past year? oh yeah, he did. but the charges were dropped, or whatever. But he still couldnt stay out of trouble.

seems like a lot of people dont want to comment about this kid. he stays out of trouble for 2 years and is a class act, Fran's getting a pay raise. On the other side, he gets in trouble, Fran AND Iowa are deemed as a dirty school recruiting thugs, ESPN has flashbacks to football this past year, Pierce stories came back up, fans want Fran's head, etc.

Too big of a risk for the entire school as a whole.

what about the entire school as a fraction?

Look, he got the charges dropped and it was said it was a misunderstanding. How do any of us know what really happened? You speculating that he "couldn't stay out of trouble" is a bit much. Coulda been nothing, coulda been something. You don't know.

Is it a risk? Sure. But at least we are taking risks at this point. The bball program can't go much lower than it already is so a risk is much needed. Lick wouldn't take a risk and it lowered us even further into the abyss we are trying to recover from.

He addressed the assault charges in his interview on TOS, he says it was a misunderstanding between him and two other women. One pressed charges, but decided to drop them because she realized the misunderstanding.

I got a news flash for all the folks screaming, "This is a risk we are taking!"
What kid out of high school is not a risk?? This man is 26 years old and has stayed out of trouble for the past 4 years. I support him and expect big things from him next year.

Dude, cmon...spent 4 years in jail. Felon....

I understand that every kid out of HS is a risk, but take off the blinkers. This is riskier than those kids. Not saying it won't work out, but bringing a felon on board is def more of a risk.

BTW, I am with you 100% on that last sentence.

2/3 felons are rearrested after their stint in prison. This is a risk. I have no problem with Fran taking this risk if he thinks Hubbard can stay on the straight and narrow. However, all the garbage about other schools being "Transfer U" and "Thug U" need to end. Us taking Hubbard makes most these other schools look like choir boys.

Actually I think it was between two women and he tried to intervene and one of them misunderstood and pressed charges that were later dropped. If I remember correctly he was trying to help break up a fight or something.

I don't have the numbers, but doesn't the recidivism rate decrease drastically for people who go longer than a year without being arrested? The vast majority of those rearrested are people who get busted within a year of their release.

It's still a risk, but nowhere near 67% chance of getting arrested again.

You don't bring in Juco players with 2 years of elegibility to be off the bench role players. He's our starting wing next year and our lineup (based on who's on the roster today) will be..

Cartwright
Gatens
Hubbard
Basabe
Brommer

For those that say you don't bring in JUCO players to come off the bench...

If you recall, BC wasn't starting until Cully got injured. Granted that worked out but just a quick example of a JUCO that didn't start at the beginning of the year.

I think he won't be starting game 1. You have them compete, make him earn it. That is how he will get respect and trust from the team. If he isn't able to break the starting rotation by the start of conference play hopefully it is because our current players had a very good offseason.

The kid made a series of bad decisions, paid the price society said he owed and is getting a second chance. Evaluate the kid for what he does on the court, in the classroom and in the community before rushing to judgment. My gut tells me he will be a familiar face in the Iowa City area boys and girls clubs trying to help kids make better decisions than he did as a youth.

Yeah, why are you turning left and right when the answer is right in front of you? This kind of stuff just blows my horn off. No wonder kids think Iowa is the bumper end of donkey. Geesh.

Cartwright was well on his way to being the starter.

In the first 5 games (which includes Cully getting hurt in the 5th); Cartwright averaged more minutes per game (22.8 vs 20.8) and more points per game (9 vs 3.8) than Cully. He would have been starting by the time we played Wake had the injury not happened.
