Howe: Noah Fant Looking Out for Himself, And That’s OK

He was basically congratulating Kittle for being used properly. If we're going to read into Kirk's specialist comment then we need to read into Fant's comments as well.

Bottom line, this relationship needed to end. In order to play for Kirk and be embraced by him you need to do 4 things:

1. Know the playbook
2. Execute it correctly on the field
3. Never under any circumstances draw attention to yourself through your play or your comments
4. Keep your head down and your mouth shut unless he gives you the okay to do otherwise

Fant obviously wasn't doing one or more of these and Kirk's ego is too big to handle anyone getting off his track. Iowa ain't getting rid of Kirk so Fant had to go.
Kirk's ego is huge; I agree.

Kirk was, "disappointed that Noah would not finish the season with his team mates and wished the tremendous athlete well in the future". I think Kirk and his staff could see this decision coming from Fant for miles away. I would have done the same thing if I were in his shoes. As a Hawkeye fan, I'm still perplexed as to why the" tremendous athlete" wasn't used more this season. I realize Hockenson was just as good , but it makes me wonder what we left on the table this season with not finding ways to take advantage of Fants' abilities and mismatches he created.

These kids sacrifice their bodies so universities can build a lot of nice, shiny things and administrators can live very comfortably. When it comes time for them to cash it, let them go in peace and support them.

Hawkeye tight end shouldn't be criticized for life decision:

A person should only be criticized mainly if they make bad decisions, murder, armed robbery anyone.

Fant has been a great hawk, made many great plays, I love the replay of him catching that TD in the back SE corner of the endzone against OSU last year. He has played hard for 3 years and some players only see he field for a year so he should be good to go.

I always look at this as a chance to see what Weiting or Beyer can do and what we have for next year.

The U of I. Or better yet, we finally get a single payer system in the United States. We can have social security, but why not a global health care system?

Becuz teh socializms!

You could just allow people/business to buy into medicare and the issue would eventually resolve itself.

Of course that wouldn't facilitate Wellmark building cathedrals to claims denials in downtown Des Moines, so maybe not.

That's a kickass crib y'all

I don't care that he is going pro and skipping the bowl game, I'm 100% sure that is the decision I'd make too if I were in his shoes. That said, why can't he be criticized? This is still a free country, everyone doesn't have to have the same opinion as you or me Rob.

My opinion, which is what this piece is, is that he shouldn’t be criticized. I can’t make people not criticize him and address in my opening paragraph.

This is a responsible, adult decision, and one that I would have advised without reservation.

Kurt puts a LOT of players in the NFL, and many of them in the first round, so he best reconcile himself to this kind of situation. In actuality, the fact that he's got players who are in a position to make this decision reflects quite positively on the Iowa football program. If he wants to ensure that they'll play in the bowl game, then he better make sure that its the CFP.

Your political leanings have escaped from your ass.

You should shove 'em back up there for the sake of everyone else.

Best of luck to him. He carries the Hawkeye flag forward to the NFL which is a good thing. Admire that he spoke highly of his time at Iowa even though I'm sure it was very disappointing to not be more involved at times this season.

Sorry Rob, but he quit the team before the final game has been played. And people are entitled to have an opinion on that, and an opinion that this is a crappy thing to do is a valid one given that the 2018 season has one more game to be played in it, and Noah Fant has elected to quit and not play in that game.

It's as simple as that. Either you're a player on the team and you play all the games that are scheduled that season, or you're a quitter. It may be what's best for him as an individual, but I'm not a Noah Fant football fan, I'm an Iowa Hawkeye football fan.

You're sticking up for his teammates. Do you know how they feel about it? Perhaps he's talked to them and they understand? They are a lot better equipped to understand their teammate's position than are we.

It's a billion dollar business. It's not high school ball.

Multiple things can be true at the same time. It's ok to use the word disappointed. Yet be totally ok with him doing it. None of KFs kids were in Fants shoes. If they had been how would those supper time talks have went? I'm bummed he won't be there to play either. He's an awesome player. But if asked me for advice (and nobody ever has or should in this sort of situation) I'd say do what he's doing. He's got a lottery ticket and he's trying to protect it till he can cash it the best he can. He conducted himself the right way his whole career at Iowa. There's nothing to hold against this young man. Good for him
Yes, being disappointed is not condemning him. I got no problem with Ferentz expressing that feeling. I'm also disappointed he won't be playing, but I also think he's making the right decision.

Also, why not come out now? Why keep people hanging. It allows Iowa to know what their personnel will be as soon as possible. In fact, I think he's doing them a favor.

I hope he makes a bundle. My only request to Fant - During the pregame player introductions, say you're from Iowa, not from your high school. That pisses me off. After all, Iowa, not your high school, had a big part in putting you in the NFL, acknowledge that.

Here's an article on what Jaylon Smith may have lost financially by playing in Notre Dame's bowl game his final year. It's what open the gates for what we're seeing now with guys skipping bowl games:
