Howe: Noah Fant Looking Out for Himself, And That’s OK

Hawkeye tight end shouldn't be criticized for life decision:

Good right up Rob. LIke I said in the other thread, you really can't blame him for the reasons listed. But, I do think it was appropriate for Ferentz to use the word "disappointed" as I do think it hurts the team's chances of being successful in the bowl game and it is not exactly the textbook definition of being a team player. I think that is an unfortunate trait and trend being lost in the amateur game, despite all the logical financial reasons for a given player leaving their team early. Hopefully the amateur game does not get hurt long term by this highly likely growing trend of players leaving early for the pros.

I don't care that he is going pro and skipping the bowl game, I'm 100% sure that is the decision I'd make too if I were in his shoes. That said, why can't he be criticized? This is still a free country, everyone doesn't have to have the same opinion as you or me Rob.

I think most people that are criticizing Fant haven't read Fant's tweet. I just wanted to hug the guy after I read it. He's a good dude.

Multiple things can be true at the same time. It's ok to use the word disappointed. Yet be totally ok with him doing it. None of KFs kids were in Fants shoes. If they had been how would those supper time talks have went? I'm bummed he won't be there to play either. He's an awesome player. But if asked me for advice (and nobody ever has or should in this sort of situation) I'd say do what he's doing. He's got a lottery ticket and he's trying to protect it till he can cash it the best he can. He conducted himself the right way his whole career at Iowa. There's nothing to hold against this young man. Good for him

Great article. IMO he made the smart, safe choice. Bowl games are pretty worthless outside of the playoffs. No point in getting hurt in an exhibition.

I hope Fant can be an ambassador for the Iowa program going forward but I'm not holding my breath. He and Kirk both took the opportunity to throw immature backhanded complement jabs at each other. It was definitely time for this relationship to end.

He's not playing in the playoff, so the bowl is just a glorified exhibition game. As a risk/reward calculation, this makes sense; although from a teammate perspective, it's a total dick move.

The solution here is for these elite level athletes to be provided with a bigass insurance policy to mitigate the financial impact of an injury.

Can you please point us towards these backhanded compliments that Fant supposedly made?

Sounds like a man crush. Should I add him to the list of players you love the most.....Eno, Willis, DJK, Locure????

Let me preface this with saying I don't blame him or feel disappointed in him one bit. Fant's been a good Hawk, especially under some odd circumstances, so I really don't have room to judge.

That being said, and I stated it last year (or the previous year, I can't recall) as well, I detest this practice. I know this is protecting one's future, but to me it's just another step towards the corporatization of CFB. If I wanted to hear about players protecting their "value", or focusing on their income, I'd watch the more of the bland dog-and-pony show that the NFL has become. To me, CFB has always represented true passion for the game of football, with players out there simply for competitive spirit and the love of the game.

I know this is the future of the game, but I certainly do not look forward to it becoming commonplace.

Who's paying and how do they regulate who qualifies?

Take a few minutes and read his tweet. Tell me if you want to criticize him after you read it.

I already said I wouldn't criticize him, as I would do the same if I were in his shoes....and probably without this awesome tweet. ;)

How is that a backhanded compliment for Kirk?

He was basically congratulating Kittle for being used properly. If we're going to read into Kirk's specialist comment then we need to read into Fant's comments as well.

Bottom line, this relationship needed to end. In order to play for Kirk and be embraced by him you need to do 4 things:

1. Know the playbook
2. Execute it correctly on the field
3. Never under any circumstances draw attention to yourself through your play or your comments
4. Keep your head down and your mouth shut unless he gives you the okay to do otherwise

Fant obviously wasn't doing one or more of these and Kirk's ego is too big to handle anyone getting off his track. Iowa ain't getting rid of Kirk so Fant had to go.

That is a fantastic article! I don't know if Kirk will come to grips with players sitting out a bowl game though. He's pretty stubborn.
Yeah it feels like the only coach that would is a basketball one in Calipari... But that's easy to do when you are just a revolving door of 5 star talent. Of course it's not apples to apples Football is different obviously and no hoops player is sitting out the championship game or NCAA tourney games to protect themselves. That said I bet most football coaches feel the same way KF does on it... That's just in their DNA and KF is just being honest.. Unless theirs more to the story I would think KF is plenty happy for the kid. He's stayed out of trouble. Represented the program in a great way and is going to go live out his dream. His dream wasn't to be a Hawkeye.. It was to play in the NFL. Being a Hawkeye is what allows him to get there the same way playing HS football got him to college...
