Howe: Iowa Football '20 Position-By-Position Outlook 1.0

They gave to Iowa when they were here. Iowa gave to them. Why does either side owe the other anything?

I dunno...the term gratitude comes to mind. I'm not saying a player is obligated to stay, when life-changing opportunity comes you grab it. Just seems a bit cold to say they owe each other nothing.

How much would you like to wager on the starting free safety next year? I've got Koerner. I'll give you the field. ;)

I think Jones will end up DT.

What I wrote was:

"Incoming freshmen Deontae Craig, Lukas Van Ness, Yahya Black, Logan Jones, Isaiah Bruce and Michael Lois all are viewed as potential help on the outside."

We need to wait until they get on campus.

Lattimore and Reiff came in as DEs.
I probably wouldn’t wager on it, I’d like to see it though. I just think Belton is a budding star and should be an every down player. To be honest Koerner was pretty solid back there outside of maybe one or two games. Definitely exceeded my expectations.

This would be my dream secondary:
CB: Hankins
CB: Brents
Cash/Nickel: DJ
Dime: Moss
S:Stone
S: Belton

It’s speculation season Rob, I’m all in.

I really like Belton as well. He'll play a lot, but you and I have been to this rodeo plenty. We'd be surprised if he started the season ahead of Koerner. I think it would be more likely he steps in if the latter struggles early in the season.

If Hankins is back, the Moss-Brents comp at corner will be interesting. I hope they find work for DJ Johnson.

I really like the Merriweather kid. He's an athletic dude. Basketball player. The mental side of the game seems to be only thing slowing him down. I wouldn't count him out just yet. He's young yet and when things click for him it'll be tough to keep him off the field too.

Rather have too many capable DBs then wishing and needing some. Parker has been just killing it lately. Since Desmond King most noteably he's been recruiting and hitting on DBs like crazy.

I think there's gratitude on both sides, at least there should be.

College sports are big business, though. And maybe we're talking semantics here.

I'm sure the players feel they owe the program for putting them in a position to succeed. But they don't owe it to play out their eligibility if there's an opportunity awaiting them that potentially sets them up for life.

Until players are paid fair wages, i feel they owe Universities nothing, ever. When a coach can pull a scholly for any reason, thats a lot of pressure on a kid and its unfair to the athlete. I have no problem with players leaving early. When they leave, I just hope they are ready, otherwise they lost that chance at a free education and a diploma.

Here are a couple of my other speculation dream ideas for next year.

-Pass rushing package with Jestin Jacobs and Joe Evans as stand up rush ends with Nixon and Golston on the inside. That could be lethal.

-Tyrone Tracy at punt returner (after 400 hours on the jugs machine this offseason). He’s electric in the open field.

-Toren Young at FB. More of a running threat and even pass catching out of the backfield.

-I would like to see some sort of jet sweep series with Tracy and Goodson. Which would include plays where Tracy lines up at tailback and Goodson shows the jet sweep motion. That puts a lot of pressure on the defense and could get these two in space.

Now I’m going super crazy speculation here.

-Wildcat formation with incoming freshman RB Leshon Williams at QB and Goodson at RB. Williams I believe has good both power and vision and a little more burst than a Toren Young. That could be a good short yardage package similar to Minnesota’s.

-What about a 3-4 defense from Iowa. Nixon nose tackle. Shannon and Logan Lee 3-4 ends. Jacobs and Golston as stand up linebackers with Colbert and Campbell inside backers. Or incoming freshman now a 4* Deonte Craig as a stand up outside rusher.

Okay I’ve had my fun for the day.

Wow. I had to read this post three times and my head is still spinning. Nike, next time spread this single post into at least three. Thanks! (Just messin’ with you, man. This was fun!)

Players drafted in the fourth round receive an $800K signing bonus.

Hooker and A Nelson left early and were chosen in that round. They both have played this season as rookies and are working towards the more lucrative second contract while getting paid.

Could they have moved up in the draft had they stayed another year, but that's also another year of wear and tear on bodies without limited amounts of mileage on them in this sport?

These are individual decisions made by players and their families. They don't owe the Iowa program anything.

Didn't know that about 800k bonus in the 4th. Hell, 400k after taxes/agent...at 20-21 years old, likely no debt.... invested even conservatively.... with no other contribution.....by 50 ...over $3.5 million.

And that's not including their salary, or making the roster and league minimum for a few years. 3-5 years on a roster, set for life at 25 and able to pursue life passions instead if toiling...

Cant blame these guys a bit. Good on 'em.

Selfishly....come back guys!
