Howe: Handing Out Holiday Gifts in Hawkeye Nation

I had some snappy sarcastic response like "TO ROB HOWE..." but I couldn't think of anything clever enough to type out. Maybe I can think of something later.

AJ might be one of the best Dends in the nation. He should have been starting. Hesse deserved to start based on being a really good player, a really good teammate, and a really good leader. But AJ deserved to start based on being the better player. It's very unfortunate that we only get to see him be a full time player for one season.

To Kirk, an ability to out coach and out smart another coach, starting with the bowl game.

To Tyler Cook, an ability to dominate against non cupcake opposition, and a jump shot.

To Iowa's AD, a kudos for sticking around ability.

To Noah Fant, a tip of the hat for skipping the bowl game, and doing what is best for his future, helping us all understand and appreciate that college football isn't about an education or winning a no one cares bowl. It is about $$$ for the coaches, administration and yes, the players.

To Brian, an ability to avoid blaming officials if his "offensive plan" is rendered ineffective by superior athletes of the opponent.

To Steve Alford, a gift of humbleness to help him realize that Christmas isn't a celebration about his birth.

Top tier coaches most often play their best players the most minutes. That is, those who strive to win championships.

Thanks for a good read, Rob, on Christmas Eve morning. Enjoying my season basketball ticket this winter and hyped for the Outback Bowl! Go Hawks! Happy Holidays to all! Be safe.

You must be a blast at parties and other social gatherings.

Lighten the heck up, Francis.

To Rob Howe: Professionalism- Happy Holidays to one of the best (if not THE best), beat writers for Iowa Athletics. Hope you the very best of holidays from this Hawkeye fanatic!

Thank you for the kind words. Happy holidays to you.

Rob I enjoyed the article. RK basically said the same thing about the dynamic coaching duo as you did only yours was less blunt.

I don't understand the Cook criticism. His biggest limitation are teammates weaknesses which allows moe attention to him.

I don't think what Gustafson has done can be overstated. Truly remarkable player.
I've told this story several times. I first met her in a hotel lobby in Ashwaubenon, WI in March, 2015. We were there for girls state basketball. The fact that her family was still there in the first place was remarkable because her team had been knocked out by (Nebraska's) Hannah Whitish and Barneveld the day before. But she was up for Ms. Basketball (which she won) and had to stay. She was very gracious for someone who had just lost at state and especially when my (then) fourth grade son had the nerve to ask her how tall she was (6'4")

Some of her family was in Iowa gear. That caught my attention. I briefly talked to some of her family about my Iowa conncections and we joked about how Iowa and Cuba City had the same school colors.

You knew she was bound for greatness. She had that quiet confidence about her. I would see her again, but not converse, when she threw shot put and discus at state track in LaCrosse in June of that year and she competed against my oldest son's girlfriend at the time (who was also no slouch at basketball)

Megan will go down as one of the all time greats in Iowa athletics. And if she wants to continue her basketball career she will probably get every chance to do so.

Happy holidays everyone!
