Howe: A Closer Look at The '20 Iowa Football Recruiting Class

Again each 3 star is not assigned the same number. There are high three stars and low three. It’s a formula that assigns points to each recruit based on their rating I.e a 5.7 rated 3 star is different than a 5.5 rated 3 star.

Oh ok, I missed those ratings. That makes sense.

Edit - Those numbers don't add up either.

But then why is Cal ranked behind Iowa with 3 more recruits and 1 more 4 star?

https://n.rivals.com/team_rankings/2020/all-teams/Football

I don't understand how they rank these teams.

Not exactly sure either. I just think it plays into it a bit if teams are relatively close. It's an average. If a team had 3-4 less recruits but 1-2 4 stars more, they'd prob jump the other team that had more recruits. But, if two teams have around the same number of 4 stars and pretty close in 3, I just think the team that has more recruits that year usually will get a little bit of an edge. Not completely sure though.

Agree, I think this is where the balance changes. There are 3 stars and fringe 3-4 stars but listed as 3 stars. The players are weighted to a point.

Sometimes I think about the possibilities of having an occasional large aggressive highly talented Hawks like Aj and Chauncey play on the basketball team to counter the brutal thugs that we endure from time to time, the likes of Maryland, Michigan State and Penn State, among others.....

That would be 10 fouls to be dealt to the likes of Fernando and Ward and others of their ilk.....

Deontae Craig and Logan Jones could provide an enforcer element to the team also.....

Of course, The Captain's approval would be a necessary factor.....

Ohio State, long ago, I believe in the Tom Davis years had a nasty thug named Dudley, a tight end on the football team, I think. He would come in and intimidate the opponents. He was a terrible at free throws, below 50%, however against the Hawks one game he was something like 12 of 13, including the winning free throws in the game.....

Mere Musings from a Troubled Mind.....

My favorite: Deontae Craig. Pass rushing is such a premium and to get a 4* kid like this is huge. Especially as it looks more and more like Bollers isn’t coming to Iowa City in the 2021 class.

Sleeper: Diante Vines. He could be another skilled WR and potential game breaker. Honorable Mention: Jay Higgins. Think that kid will be a stud at linebacker.

Question for me: I’m surprised we didn’t keep our offer out to Kav’eon Mack. He’s a bigger body WR at 6’3. The two WRs we brought in are 6 foot or shorter. I know we have Desmond Hutson as a redshirt this year who impressed so not super concerned but thought Mack could have been a good fit.

Interested to see if we add one or two in the late cycle. Overall this has been a very good class for Iowa, and 2021 is off to a hot start as well. Hope we can keep this momentum going.

Agreed - I've been wondering what transpired with Mack and why we changed course. And I think we all have great reason to be excited about this entire '20 group. But I do wish we had a little more pop at WR. Between Vines, Lawson, and Matthews, I sure hope they develop into star playmakers and they come in with big time athletic talent. But for all the discussion about our WR room getting so much better, this group feels a little underwhelming. Hope I'm wrong and have to eat my words on this one. And you never know. As I sit here at my keyboard, I know very little about these kids. Tyrone Tracy was a 3* WR ranked in the 600-700 range on 247... he's a pretty good player.

I think (we hope) we know what we'll get from the "top" of the recruiting class. Calling the top of the class: Hogan, most of the O lineman, Craig, the TEs, etc. The question is, what will become of the other ~10-11 guys? Deasfernandes, Bruce, Lukas Van Ness, the WRs I mentioned, Bracy, etc. - do these guys become huge impact players? If so, this class will be dynamite. At the end of the day, I trust our staff's ability to find 3* kids (even in the "unranked" status on 247, for example) that can be huge impact players. We've seen it countless times. Dane Belton is a prime example. He's going to be an all-conference DB with legitimate NFL looks. Can Bracy follow in a similar path? Will Deasfernandes follow in the tradition of (under-recruited) long/athletic NFL corners to come out of Iowa?

It's a proprietary algorithm that exists only inside the head of its creator.

Basically, they rank the programs according to name brand value, recent track record, program prestige, etc. Next, they average out those numerical rankings of commits and put that in an excel file next to each team's ranking they started with. Then, they add another two columns to the chart, one that lists the number of 4 stars and one that lists the number of 5 stars. And then the secret sauce is sprinkled on. They carefully consider the top few teams from the south that have a bunch of 4 and 5 stars and move those around on gut feeling. Top 10 is complete. They then look at the temporarily embarrassed blue bloods and will knock a few of them way way down to create some chatter. Then, for the teams other than the 10-15 blue bloods that they actually analyzed, they use a deviation tool, again based on gut feeling, to move a team up or down something like maybe 10 spots. If a team has only 12 recruits or something, they move it way down. If it has 28, they might give it a boost of a few spots. It's all very scientific.

We need to figure out how to run the ball, have an offensive line that can block as a group, and find an accurate QB...the WRs will fall into place, it seems to me.

I stand corrected on Deuce enrolling early. Director of recruiting Tyler Barnes told us today that Gavin Williams, Mason Richman and Elijah Yelverton will be enrolling early.

Also, I've learned that Craig is having a signing ceremony tomorrow.

Lois told me there is some paper work/loose ends involved with his scholarship with the uncertainty if he'll be able to play.

The staff wants to see some more things from Gulley. He could sign in February.

It's interesting that you chose Yahya Black as a sleeper, as I was going to propose him as well. When you watch his tape, he's got some "quick-twitch" to him, which is something we've lacked at times throughout the last several years.

The other player my gut says could be a sleeper is Ethan Hurkett. Hard to say where he'll end up, but he's got very good movement skills for his size. A lot to work with there.

What position for Black?

Lawson is coming in as a DB I believe FYI.

We also have Tracy, Ragaini, and Lockett as freshman and Desmond Hutson will be a redshirt freshman next year. Martin technically a sophomore. WR room is in good shape.

I think you touched on it but a lot of our lower rated guys are DBs in this class, and I think we just need to trust Phil Parker there.

I think this is a really good class.

We are all waiting on pins and needles for IowaLaw’s synopsis of this class.

Last year he was up in arms that Iowa snagged LaPorta as a 3rd TE! Stupid he said. Turns out Lee switched positions and LaPorta looks like a strait up stud. Another instance of course where Iowa Law was wrong.

That guy really needs to start his own blog! I get tired of his Iowalaws.......

First you have to understand that not all three stars are equals. Have you seen the offer lists for Yelverton and Lachey? Depending on the service Iowa has like 4 or 5 four stars which includes Hogan, Craig, Jones, Richman, Elsbury. Yelverton and Lachey have to be damn close.

This has been an awesome class by the Iowa staff. They had nearly this entire class filled out pretty early in the game with players they identified early and wanted, i.e their first choice. They then held off late pushes on some of those commits.

That is what I like as well.
