Iowa City is completely different than 90% of college stadiums due to the lack of parking. THERE SHOULD BE A DIFFERENT STANDARD!

My Big-10 experience is:

NW = scattered/parcel lots like Iowa.
OSU = scattered/parcel lots like Iowa. Shuttles to and from the Shoe.
MSU = scattered/parcel lots like Iowa. Shuttles to and from the stadium.
Purdue = scattered /parcel lots like Iowa.
Illinois = scattered/parcel lots like Iowa.
Minnesota = from what I've seen on the map, you won't be able to park very close to the stadium.
Wisconsin = scattered/parcel lots like Iowa.

Indiana = close in parking

Never been to scUM or PSU.

If the University is serious about reversing the party image, then why doesn't it suspend alcohol sales inside Kinnick too?

It all boils down to economics - you can't charge $2500 a seat in the club level just for the privilege of riding the elevator up and a little shorter bathroom line.

Urine kills plants and therefore causes property damage. Additionally, if someone is wearing flip flops and they step in a giant urine puddle, they may contract disease. Finally, if public urination is legal, then every perv who exposes himself would merely have to say he was urinating and he would walk. I'm tough on crime, but also tough on what should be defined as a crime. Outlawing public urination has a strong public health rationale, outlawing walking whilst on a public right of way with an open beer does not.

My thought is that if you want to stop the crazy drivers out there from going 90 on the interstate, you don't crack down harder on the people going 72 mph. It's not too hard to spot someone out of control or acting like a nuisance to those around him. If the cops simply took care of the people going 90 instead of trying to be tricky in catching the people going 72 then they might actually prevent people from going 90. Stupid drunks are going to act like stupid drunks regardless of what rules are in place. These "crackdown" rules are not going to stop the stupid drunks.

And that is the point of many of those against the new rules. My point is the purpose of these rules are not to crack down on the stupid drunks (at least not any more than they were doing in previous years). The purpose behind it is mostly financial. Everything else (public safety vs. infringement of freedom/rights) is a red herring.

I think the analogy is apt. Most adults who show up at Kinnick to have a few beers are responsible, tax paying citizens just looking to have a good time. They have an expectation that a standard of material compliance or fairly close compliance with laws without being an idiot is fine, they work hard, they pay taxes, no need to treat them like kids. The guy driving 72 ain't causing accidents, he's in fairly close compliance with the law, the guy who's driving 90 is reckless, he's way out of compliance and is much more likely to cause harm to someone. Once you deviate from the point of material compliance to strict compliance and outlaw things like walking 100 feet across the street with an open beer or start using a machine to write tickets to everyone going 66 in a 65, you've entered deeper into the realm of the nanny state, where the state is treating its tax paying subjects like freaking 14 year olds. Then you add in the Marion and University Heights cops with little man syndrome and you've got a real party on your hands.

I think you should run for office under the platform of strict compliance with every law on the books. Increase police hiring significantly and ticket every single person you see going 1 mph over the speed limit, failing to use a turn signal, rolling through a stop sign at 1 mph when there's no one around, etc. That would create utopia.

I can't wait until you "tough on crime" guys start going after jaywalkers on Melrose. Are they next on your list? Jaywalking is a crime, jaywalkers should be ticketed, too, or do you guys only want to enforce "crimes" involving booze because you can't get the temperance movement started back up?

I think Mason and Barta need a deluge of emails regarding the jaywalking problem on Melrose.

As I was trying to drive to my parking spot in the KC Lot west of Kinnick Stadium last Saturday, my path the Stadium was blocked multiple times by persons jaywalking on Melrose. Could you please order the law enforcement specialists near the Stadium to begin ticketing all of the jaywalkers so that when I arrive at the Stadium at 10:30 I have a clearer path to the Stadium?"

I understand that to you, the inabiity to not drink a beer (to get in the zone, right) while you walk down Melrose on those seven days a year is an affront to civil rights. I'm not really sure what this "zone" is or who lives there, but based on your rabid defense of it, I'm sure it's an awesome place.

Who said anything about tough on crime? I certainly didn't, so either you're using a very creative interpretation, or just making stuff up. When I go to games, I drink, and I've taken beers down Melrose before on my walk down. That being said, I'm not going to get bent out of shape or get sand in my drawers because I can't do that anymore. If these were new laws, I might see your point of view. But they're not, so I don't.

Nothing against you, brah, just the defeatist attitude that my fellow countrymen seem to have become accustomed to. It ain't like that section of the Iowa Code was walked down Mount Sinai by Moses or anything. Jaywalkers pose a bigger threat to public safety than someone carrying an open beer, go after them. It doesn't matter to me, me and HappyChef landed KC passes so I won't have to wander out into prole hinterlands anyway.

Hey guys, what's the University's take on red meat? I want to make sure I stay in compliance here. Moderation? I know they have seriously recommended I cut back on my vodka intake with their rules which makes me a better person in the long run I'm sure. Thank god someone's putting some rules around drinking out there that will really change behavior.

What I would really like to see is a "University Tailgate Manual" so I can ensure the safety of myself and those around me.
