How to fix an ailing offense?

Winner! Football post of the year. Or past several years. Like 16 years.

And I think he can afford the therapy. His co-pay can't be more than like 10% probably. LOL.

I'll pick up the copay. I've been begging him to get some therapy for his phobias for a long, long time.

Just think where this program might be if we had a more dangerous, creative offense these past many years.

Just think the number of talented skill players we could have attracted these past many years if our coach had a different offensive philosophy?

The offensive statistics don't lie.

The lack of Hawkeye skill players in the NFL is glaring.

The defense has been historically solid.

Where would KF be without Parker/Parker?

Probably in his 4th gig or so as an NFL OL coach.

Hire a sharp, young OC. And tell the HC to take his hands the F*** off of the offense.Management 101. Hire good people and let them do their job.

And then, get some therapy to dig up whatever deeply conditioned fear you have that prevents you from reaching for greatness, and instead has you constantly playing/working/thinking from a posture centered on fear of failure/mistakes. (ie: won't let you do the above)

This might be the only long-term solution. The GD and KF playbook mix isn't working. KF needs to hire someone consistent with his style and let him do his job. Iowa can afford to spend the $1 million or whatever for a top notch coordinator.

Short-term though, I do think we need to switch QB's. Only 21% of JR's attempts are medium or deep compared to CJ at 37%. JR needs a lot of separation to make a throw and defenses aren't going to be afraid to stack the box against him. That's not going to be helpful for the run game.

Two of Iowa's all time record breaking receiver's (DJK & McNutt) couldn't even make a dent in the NFL. Iowa record holders!! That tells you. What freaking college team can't get a receiver on an NFL team that contributes from time-to-time?? WR is one of the more deep positions on team as well. So, for around 30 some NFL teams that prob have 5-6 WR's get playing time a game, it's amazing to not have any from a college a college program not in the NFL. Also, the number of years as well. Thank goodness for the Dallas Clark and the other TE's. There are a number of them who have contributed.

I've noticed a lot of changes in the O over the last few weeks, if not the last few years.

Now they are throwing deep more and throwing over the middle more. They don't take a knee with 2 minutes in the half anymore like they did 2012 and before. There are certainly multiple formations.

I was beginning to think that KF was so focused on micro details of the offense that he was totally unaware of predictability of the offense. Game prep, I imagined, was akin to a guy with thick glasses, in a small room, stacking bee bees with a tweezers.

The "zone blocking" scheme that KFz clings to...is all but dead everywhere else. Almost nobody uses it. College or Pro.

End of story.

Actually, the NFL uses it a lot. Still. This article is from February 2014.

The zone-based blocking scheme is the preferred approach of most teams in the league, with offensive linemen assigned to block the first defender that appears on their designated tracks. The unit moves in unison to the direction of the play call, leaving the running back a choice of seams to attack when defenders jump out of their assigned gaps.

Here's how its supposed to look 6:30 mark.

You chose the right year. Wide zone hasn't really worked too well since Fred Russell (with the exception of Shonn Greene) based on the stats. It's funny I was watching a video with Alex Gibbs (one of the creators of zone blocking) and he's narrating a play where Terrell Davis screws up the cutback on a stretch play. If a back of that caliber can have difficulty, I don't know how we can expect a typical Iowa RB to get it right. Anyway, I don't think our RBs have done well with it. I think the inside zone has worked better.

This. It will be interesting to see how Brian & Kirk butt heads next year. Very

How about we don't do a RBBC with 4 different Running Backs and we keep one deserving QB starting (aka Sunshine Beathard) instead of trying to play a 2 QB System. When's the last time it worked?

Hell, our WR couldn't catch the ball last week from Beathard all game let alone two different QB passes.
