How much of the lack of offense is poor QB play...

Vs our WR's not being able to get open? It seems like MG (and other QB's in previous years) get ready to throw and see nothing. And that seems to be the norm over the past several years. Kinda similar to how or DB's don't seem to ever know how to turn around when the ball is coming. Just a thought.
The interception the receiver #21, slipped on the cut, not QB fault

So, let's put the sophomore in and hopefully he gets enough reps by the time he's a senior that we can witness a Hawkeye QB throw for over 100 yards.
Gronowski would have had those reps had he been healthy in the spring and summer. That's not on him, but one could argue that it's on the staff for signing him knowing that he would need surgery.

The offense Lester is trying to install is predicated on timing. Right now, it's not there.

They 100% were already on the way to jumping the route.
I kind of saw it the same way, but if Wetjen was coming back towards the LOS on that route he would have put his body in front of the corner, so hard to speculate if the pick would have happened.

In any case, the coaches should have recognized that the ISU DBs were squatting on the routes and missed opportunities to make them pay.

OK. let's assume he caught it...and would have either been immediately tackled or pushed out of bounds. Groanouchie would have had 92 yards on the day instead of 84.

We lost end of story. That's two years in a row. Our conference is among the wealthiest in college football and on an average the big ten has three times more money per football program than the Big Twelve.

This should not be happening.
Conference money doesn’t mean shit. It’s NIL money that matters and ISU has more than Iowa.

Gronowski’s problemo isn’t accuracy or velocity or mobility, it’s lack of vision, period. He’s not seeing open receivers. Slice and dice it however you want, it’s a fact if you watch the game over again focusing on WRs…he’s not seeing wide open guys and thus is just hanging out in the pocket for an eternity. Nothing good happens when you have 6 seconds to throw and you use all 6 of them.

If the OL didn’t play so well in the 2nd half (inexplicably), Gronowski would’ve been sacked 7 or 8 times. You can tell that the P4 game is moving WAY too fast for him vs the level he was at. Whether he adapts or not before it’s too late is anyone’s guess, but there were plenty of guys to throw to and he has the accuracy and ability to do it. MG’s problem is between his ears.

Agree on WRs but our DBs are excellent at finding the ball.

I don't think Oregon scores 50.
The more likely problem is whether we score more than 10.
I doubt we do. It just goes to show how elite our D has been when they are doing this all the time knowing the offense won’t score 20 and being on the field so much.

I just watched every every offensive play again. Gronowski isn't nearly as bad as it seems. He wasn't perfect, but he's a huge step up from what we've seen the last few years IMO. The play calling didn't do him any favors. There were some drops. Some might say that he frequently held the ball too long, but ISU's coverage was pretty good for most of the game.

He missed a couple open receivers at crucial moments. One was 2nd qtr 9:57 3rd & 5 and where he missed Large wide open after Large pushed the LB on his back. Another one was the 3rd down on the last drive. I couldn't tell who it was (looked like #22 on the back of the jersey), but he ran the under route, was way more open than Large, and probably would've had the first down if MG throws it to him. The offensive line was terrible on the last drive which didn't help. ISU got home without blitzing on 1st & 2nd down and with only 3 down linemen on the 2nd down which is unacceptable.

I'm not giving up on MG yet. The defense is better than I thought they'd be. The season isn't over and this loss is insignificant as far as the big picture goes. Unfortunately, I think ISU is the real deal this year and they were the better team today. I still think Iowa can have a great season though.
Right there with you.

Yup.

We continue to set offensive records.
Gronowski adds a dimension to our game with mobility and running ability. Unfortunately he ain’t to good at throwing the ball. A friend of mine likened him to Dan Roan a former cubs triple A player who was great in the minors but couldn’t make it in the big leagues

But give credit to Ferentz who hasn’t been able to put together a passing attack in years. And Lester ain’t the answer. Coaching and schemes make a difference

Hopefully Ferentz calls it quits after this year and Beth goes after a coach not currently on staff in

"What I'm seeing is a QB that isn't completely comfortable with the scheme and his WRs quite yet."
This may be THE understatement of the 2025 football season.
