Hockenson, Hooker & A. Nelson on NFL Decisions

I really HATE to seem to agree with Fryowa on ANYTHING.....but.....did you watch the Hawks this year? All that cool stuff that you suggest....its called a unicorn. Lockness monster. Easter Bunny. The same qb who couldnt win 4 games with drives and gift wrapped one of MSU's scores, the same return man who made it possible for MSU to even be in the game, the same team going against the #1 defense in the nation.....really? I mean...maybe....but....really? Again, pleased with the outcome but...i disagree that we win after MSU catches that TD pass (if they had).
just like him, you suggesting we wouldn't do something is nothing but conjecture.

And, the QB in his last two games led a game winning drive, and was the offensive reason we won yesterday...including a drive to get 3 on the second to last possession yesterday.

What he did yesterday was everybit the equivalent of what Tate did against LSU with no running game. Unlike Tate he didn't get a hail mary chance, was without a top playmaker, and statistically eclipsed Tate at 21-31, 3 tds with NO running game. Additionally, pretty accomplished players in his face on MANY of those 31 attempts. I understand there are things jock sniffers do not understand...namely improvement. Thinking Iowa wouldn't have gotten a 6th scoring drive of the game is just pessimistic.

Kirk's offense put it in the end zone three times. Against a team that game up twelve all year playing in the SEC.

MSU's settled for three FG's when they could easily have had three or four TD's, not including the end zone drop/pick.

Go ahead and keep hating though.

He doesn't even make sense. Two of those he said should leave--because of Kirk's offense--are on the defensive side of the ball.

Regarding NFL careers. The main reason they are as short as they are is because marginal players get replaced by younger players after a couple years. That affects the average years in the NFL stat way more than career ending injuries.

That being the case, most guys who come back for one more year aren't going to get one less year in the NFL. They are still going to get their few year window to try to stick. The only guys who lose a year in the pros due to coming back for a year are the guys with long NFL careers and guys who get a career ending injury during that last year. The first one is no big deal because those guys end up with a ton of money anyway. The second one is deciatating. But it is also pretty unlikely.

And it was 3 TDs throwing the ball. Amazing!

And they didn't call a lot of those. The hold on Nelson that negated the long play at the end if the half was blatant. He was "being held like a grudge" like the announcer said.
Eppy helped change the course of the game. He gets some of the credit for forcing the hold on Nelson.

MSU underestimated our pass rush. They underestimated us in general, especially after they owned they first quarter. They were probably used to those pretty SEC teams quitting for the day after starts like that.

That's why they are cream puffs. They dominated those lesser than them and folded after a few hay makers from game opponents. They actually showed more fight then I expected yesterday. I didn't expect them to come out in the second half and compete at all. Maybe they are starting to turn a corner.

I would love to get at least one back, unfortunately the King story is a huge fresh reminder of how much you can lose if you stick around. Hock will never be hotter as all teams will game plan to stop him.

For all college players - would be interesting for someone to do a follow up story from last year and see what they were told and what actually happened. Currently 85+ players going early. 7 x 32 = 224 spots. Not all in 1st 3 rounds.

Can't recall anyone leaving Iowa early and not being picked fairly high.

Well Josh Jackson last year was projected by many as a top 15 pick and fell to the middle of the second round.

For reference the corner the Packers selected in the 1st round has a contract with $12 million guaranteed and JJ’s contract is worth $6 million with about $3.8 million guaranteed.

In theory if JJ would have come back and got drafted in the 1st round this year he would have stand to make quite a bit more in guaranteed money, but you also have to weigh that against potential injury, chances you don’t improve your stock, and lengthening the time before you start your second contract, along with getting a college degree for some which is worth something. I’m not saying he made the wrong decision but it’s interesting.

As of now, all of them are leaving. The staff is going to look at grad transfers for TE and safety.

He definitely would have. He showed promise this year but there are still some holes in his game that another year of school would absolutely have fixed.

His case is interesting. King's is also. King came back and fell hard from the projections the previous year. JJ went and fell hard from the projection. The only common denominator that I can tell is that the projections are flawed or even more than likely just plain old sabotage.

It is well known that Iowa is a developmental program. We will make stars out of players no doubt. Easiest way to keep us from shining too bright is to convince our almost finished products that they are better than they are and are ready for the next level. Imagine this years team with Daniels and JJ. While I believe Daniels actually was ready for the next level I don't believe that Josh was. Both were ready to be major stars for Iowa as Senior leaders.

To be fair, if Guidry didn’t literally hand Gervase the football in the end zone, the Hawks lose. At that point we’d be saying that MSU’s DL was impenetrable and that Fitzgerald ran on us at will to win the game. Both of those things happened.

Was the ball to Guidry slightly deflected by Geno Stone around the 15 yard line. Some other poster mentioned this and I have looked at the replay a couple of times. It sure might have happened. Guidry looks like he is ready to catch the ball coming toward the middle of his chest and then this hands try to slide to the left side of his body.

Yes it was a catchable ball even if and I say if it was slightly deflected but lots of top pro receivers drop fairly easy would be completions.

And Jackie Smith of the Cowboys says hello if you want to dispute catching easy passes especially to win a Super Bowl.

It certainly was. Ball left Fitzgeralds hand as a tight spiral, and you can see it's fluttering by the time it gets to Guidry.
