HN TV: KF on FG Down 8, Recruiting Policy

So it is harder to convert 5 yards, score a TD from the redzone and score again from the 2 than it is to convert a FG, stop Wisconsin (, and drive the length of the field again and score a TD in under 5 minutes?

In all fairness, you still have to factor in winning in overtime in your first scenario.

Scoring offense - 74th - gimme "in all fairness" spin.

9 total points in the game - again, gimme "in all fairness" spin.

King not used at all on offense, not even as a decoy - again, gimme "in all fairness" spin.

Here, I'll help you Mr. Professional Devil's Advocate. Kirk isn't good with offense. We have 18 yrs of data on his scoring offense and it's clear that scoring points befuddles him. I think overtime strategy befuddles him. He needs that pad of paper so when Biels executes a fake punt he can write: "Just witnessed a fake punt. Pretty sure that's an illegal play. Will write a complaint letter to the superintendent of officials." You're a contrarian dork.

I can see both sides to it. If we convert the FG we may have been able to get a short field to win the game with a TD. We had quite a bit of momentum, which was mostly taken away by not executing the FG. I probably would have tried to convert the 4th down, but it's not a blasphemous decision.

For a coach that is scared to death of what ifs, that is relying on a lot more what ifs

What on earth does this post have to do with what I said. I was just pointing out one big thing Boat forgot when calculating odds. Obviously it's way easier to score the td and get the 2 pt conversation than it is to make a field goal, get a stop, and score a td. The problem with that math is the first one gives you a 50% chance to win in ot and the second one gives you 100% chance to win. I have no idea how pointing out that simple fact has anything to do with what you just said.

Just for a reminder of what Chevin was saying a few weeks ago...

I think it's fitting considering what Kirk just said in regards to recruiting.

"When I committed the only person I've spoken to is coach (Levar) Woods, and he doesn't even coach my position. Coach Woods just recruits this area. The defensive back coach, coach (Phill) Parker, called me right after I committed and I've never heard from him again. I'm not a needy type of guy, but when I committed, I want to at least have some kind of communication. I want to feel like they are excited about me, but they want even answer me or my step dad's calls. He tried to get in touch with coach Parker to set up my official visit, and they said they would get back in contact and never did. When that happened we just decided to open my recruitment back up."

"It was weird, to be honest. I have the head coaches at Arkansas and Ole Miss calling me weekly, and we can't even get my position coach at Iowa to get on the phone with me. A lot of the Iowa fans are mad at me for taking these visits, but they don't understand what is going on behind the scenes. I mean, I told coach Woods about the situation and week after week went by without ever hearing from them. How am I supposed to take that? Coach Woods said they couldn't read my mind but they still never got in contact with me. I don't know. You want to go where you feel wanted."

Scout is just as bad. Probably 247 as well. Anywhere you have paying Hawkeyes they demand reality-denial as part of the bargain. If Hawkeyenation remains a bastion of freedom they will win out in the long run.

How much time would it take to give a 4 star recruit a call every week or two? We hired a analytics firm for clock management, maybe we need recruiting consultants.

I'm being totally serious when I say if I was Kirk Ferentz I would take that 500k raise and buy me some full time recruiters who spend all their time servicing the egos of Divas. I say that because we all know the big boyz have those type of resources and use them. Iowa could as well if the richest public employee in the state had some foresight.

I'm pretty sure we could easily afford that and it wouldn't even have to come out of Kirk's salary.

Of course they could. And I'm sure there are at least a couple of Ferentz relatives who would be happy to take a 200k job where all they have to do is talk to teenage boyz on the phone and send an occasional text/email.

In summary, Kirk Ferentz is not a good situational coach by any stretch of the imagination. It would not be an Iowa game without a couple "head scratcher" type decisions made. This aspect of his coaching will never change. All of us must keep in mind, though, we are really stupid and he is really smart.

Say what you will about ferentz, but it's amusing that more emphasis isn't placed on Barta for the last TWO contacts.

It's not funny at all. Barta does get a lot of criticism here. Captain Greed negotiated the terms. I do not believe for one second that Barta laid the "buy out" terms on the table in his initial offer. Even if he did, Ferentz did not have to put the University in that position.(expensive buy out) Ferentz took care of himself and to hell with what is best for the University.

Attempting a FG with 5 min or so left vs Wisconsin was stupid. I get what they were doing, but kicking a FG mean you still need another TD to win the game. Say you go for it and don't make it, you still need another TD, and 2 pt. conversion to tie the game. With the way we were moving the ball vs Wisconsin it was a slim chance we get another opportunity as good as the one we were in. Plus if you are committed to going for it on 4th, you run the ball on 3rd and 5 and you more than likely make it a 4th and 2 or less anyway.
