Hilton vs Carver

Ahh, a source nazi for observational conversation. That's fancy.

I apologize. I guess I was under the (apparently incorrect) assumption that in a place as crude and informal as a college message board you'd understand the difference between conjecture and a research paper.

I suppose I could have started all my sentences with, "In my opinion," or "I believe," or "If you ask me," but my 5th grade English teacher told me that those phrases delay the message, demonstrate the writer's insecurity, and they tell the reader what he already knows. My fault.

To answer your post, I don't have a source for that. If you ask me, I believe it is my uncitable opinion that most young people don't care about sports as much as they used to. Does that work better?

Or just don't say somethings a fact when it's not.

Our fans just don't take it seriously enough:

Oh, man, I love this picture. I think that Clone "hit man" was on his way to thrash Kansas coach Bill Self...

And I'm in Tampa, FL - maybe I need to come back too. :p

Yeah, I'm not sure about Carver's acoustics, but I just felt that the crowds were a lot better a long time ago. Even if you watch this video, say from the 5:00-7:00 minute mark or so.. The crowd just seemed so much more responsive and into it whenever Iowa would score and go on a little run. But of course, Iowa was at the end of a pretty good decade of basketball, as well. Can't really say that now, even if the last couple years have been good.

Don't know, maybe Alf/Lick did more damage than I realize.

In 05-06 the crowds were loud during the Big Ten season and that was the last time we were in this position. I don't know what the hell is wrong with our fans this year. I'm not even seeing much enthusiasm amongst my social media peeps and even this site seems dead anymore. I really think we're not a basketball school anymore. Oh well that means i enjoy the team and stuff is cheap for me.

You and Fryowa both make good points. i'm sure Fryowa is correct that a few big years would really help our fan enthusiasm and certain programs have that tradition that builds a rabid fan base (it's got to be a factor) but even prior to this year, Iowa has been competitive. NCAA last two years. Iowa is Top 5 this year with only 5 games left - where's the enthusiasm? There's just something wrong/missing in Carver's crowds, and I don't know what that "something" is.

I don't know, maybe it's the stink of the Alford/Lick years, but as we've said.. Nebraska. They've never really been any good. Certainly not in recent history. Maybe it's worse when you used to be good, and then stunk for 15 years, as was our case, but I'm just taking shots in the dark at this point.

What I do believe, is that if everyone in the arena was as passionate as most of us on this board are, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Unfortunately Iowa has the reputation among "average Joe" fans, (i.e. not lunatic fans like us on this board), of having great early season runs and ***tting the bed when it counts. That translates into people expecting it and not getting fired up. In the weeks leading up to the B1G title game and the Rose Bowl my town (almost as far as you can physically get from IC and still be in Iowa) was electric. Everyone was talking Hawks, people wearing gear, flying the flags, honking horns, you name it. Then the football team took a family sized dump and now no one seems to care. I know that's not how we think, but we aren't the majority. I don't want to steer this in the direction of football, but I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard around town stuff like, "Yeah they're playing great but I just hope they don't fall apart at the end like the football team..." People get used to what they perceive as failure unfortunately.

It's almost like we have hope, have potential, and then settle for upper middle of the road every year. You have to admit that we as Hawk fans get our hopes sky high most years for good reason, and then get gutted down the stretch or in a bowl game. You can't do that for long before people stop getting their hopes and enthusiasm up. It's easy to get fired up as a Nebraska b-ball fan because they know their team sucks and aren't getting let down when they lose. To me being, just above average sucks more than being terrible. Unless you're okeefe4prez. He likes that stuff.

I think the Iowa administration has shown that when it comes to seating, money talks. Rich ol' blue hairs are the ones rewarded at Iowa.

When I see other crazy rabid fanbases on TV, it kinda makes me jelly. But it seems that Iowa has done alright at home so far. When I really think about it: yeah other venues look more fun. But I'm not convinced that it affects the outcome of the game much.

Yeah, I do seem to remember Carver getting pretty loud that year. But, I guess that was all pre-Lickliter. Maybe I underestimate how much damage was done to this program after 2006..

You're one of those mouth-breathers who starts every sentence with "So..." and says "literally" all the time, aren't you?

That's a very good point that I hadn't thought of. Even just 2 years ago, the team was #10, and then an epic meltdown. It happened more than once during the Alford years. Seemingly every year from 2001-2005 or so. 2005-06 was about the only year there was NOT a meltdown, but then NWST happened.

So yeah, I've been kicked in the nads by Iowa hoops too many times the past 15 years or so.

That isn't killing my excitement for this year - I've been as pumped as I've been for a while, but I have to admit this has been in the back of my mind.

This is a discussion board. Discussions are fun. Discussions stop being fun when people make up things. A source or link about young people not following spectator sports anymore would have been interesting.

Soooooo, my you got my hopes up and I'm literally sad.

I think it was Scott Dochterman on Twitter during the last game who observed that unlike other teams' fans, the Iowa crowd tends to get loud and crazy in reaction to something happening in the game, as opposed to getting loud and crazy first and perhaps causing something to happen by distracting the other team or giving the home team an energy boost. I thought it was an interesting observation, but I don't know why it's that way or how you fix it if it is.
