Hey, OK4P, what do you think about this secret to winning championships?

New Mexico no longer an afterthought in MWC

In an interview, the three-time Coach of the Year in the conference with the country's best RPI, the Mountain West, shares his secret to winning the big games at tournament time:

''We don't have to change things,'' Alford said. ''I think there are some teams in the tournament that, as good as they are, they have to change some things. They have to be a little better. They have to be a little more special. Or put some wrinkles in. We just have to be who we are..."

I know you believe the Hawkeyes are catching fire at just the right time and will go deep in the BTT. Do you think this would be a good approach for Fran in Chicago and for wherever the road takes the Black and Gold afterwards?

The Fraud "knows what it takes?" LMAO! The dude was a disgrace while at Iowa- all style, no substance. He jumps ship before we can can his butt and leaves an empty cupboard for Lick; going to New Mexico was a step down into the mid major ranks where he belongs. That New Mexico team would finish behind Iowa in the Big Ten. And he will lose like he always does when in matters in a couple weeks.

Nice hiding behind an alt. Why the anger. Iowa knew he was "confident" when he was hired. He had little big time experience. He's learned on the job. Wasn't it 3 tourney championships games?

who gives a fat rats arse

He won 2 big ten tourney championships and finished as a runnerup another time and a final four (tied for third) one other time.

I've never understood the hate for Alford, other than he left Iowa after Iowa broke its promise to build him a practice facility (a promise that was kept for Fran).

You guys are only hearing the Iowa side of the story. There is another side as well.....

1. Pierre Pierce
2. Pierre Pierce Part 2
3. Horrible NCAA tournament record
D. He was an arrogant a--hole.

Correction: Alford did NOT leave a "bare cupboard". He MADE it.

"Tied for third". That's one I hope he keeps on the resume'.

I would think that an Iowa fan would know it was two. Tell me again, how many did Webber win?

I love how people still call the guy "Fraud." You want to talk about a fraud, look no further than the head football coach who took us to 4 wins and who has gotten absolutely destroyed by Fitz almost every time he has faced him, yet charges nearly $4 million a year for services. That is a Bernie Madoff level of fraud.

He is currently having "regular season" success at a mid-major with low admission requirements. They can have him. We don't want him...got way more than a fair chance at Iowa.

Steve Alford is a winner; it is a shame Iowa let him escape to the desert (not unlike an earlier Iowa basketball coach):

NCAA National Championship (1987)
Big Ten Tournament Championship (2001, 2006)
MWC Regular Season Championship (2009 and 2010, 2012, 2013)
MWC Tournament Championship (2012)

How many national championships did Mr. Davis Davis win? He was named Coach of the Year in 1987 by the Associated Press, but what do those dumb sports writers know? Certainly not that the good doktor won with George Raveling's players. What honors did Lickliter win (while at Iowa)? How many has Fran won?

Folks, Iowa didn't need to be a sub-standard team that needs to win out in its 2013 conference tournament in order to have any hope of making it to the Dance for the first time in seven years. Steve Alford knew what it takes to win in the Big Ten. If the Hawks falter in Chicago and wind up playing in the losers tournament for the 69th-ranked team in the country and worse, there's just one person to blame: Gary Barta.
