Here we go again...the bowl system is a mess

Who cares if there is more football? I like football. I miss it when it's gone. Why is the existence of some lame bowl in December so personally offensive to the fragile OP? These aren't money makers for the schools. Most schools are on the hook for their ticket allotment and will lose money. Teams in the Big 10 share revenue so it doesn't matter, but these aren't money-makers for the schools. There's no conspiracy here. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Big deal.

Do not understand this argument.

How is the Foster Farmers Bowl a reward?

The players will work more and the school will get more money and the kids will get nothing.
Actually the payout on the lower bowls are so small, it is very common for schools to lose money by going to a bowl. From a money standpoint, Rutgers and Purdue will benefit more financially than Indiana, Minny and Nebby.

Sure pal.

Be sure to give us your in-depth analysis of the Miami Beach/GoDaddy/Quick Lane (disguised as the Pizza bowl)/Nova Home Loans/Tax Slayer/Cactus bowl games.

Don't like those..it's OK...there's two dozen other dogs to choose from.

We wait with abated breath.

This dude was a good poster and then lost his mind. Must've taken last night really hard.

...says the guy who's received 400+ thumbs and has given two.

Yessirre....I can see you're a tough critic. Thanks for the back-handed kudos!

BTW...I 'rant' on the bowl mess yearly. This year has reached yet another level of ridiculousness.

When I say money grabbers, I'm not talking about the schools.

I'm talking about the cities/Chambers-of-Commerce who suck all these dollars in while glad-handing a substandard product on the field.

It's hypocrisy at its best.

I watch most of those games every year, but, you're obviously the sort of person who decides that, because they don't like something, nobody else is allowed to like it either so don't let me get in the way of your lame rant.

It's hypocritical for the Chamber of Commerce of a bowl city to want to make money on a bowl game? I don't think you know what you're talking about.

You are arguing about the free enterprise system, arguing against it. The last few years the number of empty seats in some of these lower tier bowls is amazing but they must get enough sponsor money and tv money to keep the bowls afloat for a few years.

But they have a right to have the games so many will have small tv ratings etc, but the fans of those teams will like it.

Bowls are and have always been creatures of commerce. They are exhibitions. Yes, on top of that, the B1G sent its champion starting in the late 40's to the rose bowl. And still, apart from the players and coaches, it was exhibition. Commerce dressed up as amusement.

As time went by more institutions had opportunities to participate based on merit. Still it is commerce.

No need to get up in arms about teams being deserving

I don't see the big deal, they are additional football games. While it is doubtful I will tune into App State playing Ohio or San Jose State vs Georgia State I bet some people will. If I'm not doing anything when Indiana plays Duke or UCLA plays Nebraska I'll probably tune in.

As will I. College football is awesome, and the off season is long.

40 bowls is too many imo, but I'll watch as many as I'm able.

Outside of the CFP now, What "matters" is subjective to who you cheer for. That said, good football is fun to watch, if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Go Hawks.

I guess it is equivalent to watching two .500 B1G teams playing in November. Not much at stake, but I am still going to follow the game. Same for a bowl game matching very compatible opponents.

Two of our division rivals getting extra practices instead of being at home like they deserve to be is a bad thing.

A mess, laughable, desperate, T-Rex syndrome. Forty(!) bowl games in all. Forty! Good Lord.

I'm witnessing things I've never seen before, even in the muck and the mire known as the bowl system. They are truly floundering to fill up their worthless games with over priced tickets, with the end product being 1/2 empty stadiums.

To wit:

#1--The Arizona Bowl picked two teams from the same conference

#2--They ran out of teams who met the laughable criteria of merely being 6-6 or better to quality.
This year, the mother-ship NCAA stepped in and put together criteria for 5-7 teams to go.
Criteria....get this...baed on academic stature. It's so absurd it's almost criminal.
So, instead of tightening up the criteria and simply telling the have-nots they're no longer needed/wanted, they invented bogus ones.

#3--And who are these fine, outstanding institutions being blessed for their academic standing? There were three....

Nebraska of course, @ 5-7. (Foster Farmers Bowl)
San Jose State (Cure Bowl)
Minnesota (Quick Lane Bowl)....I guess Neb's and Minney's losses to Iowa looked pretty impressive too.

At least the consolation-prize Big-6 bowls (which you have to sit around like a dog waiting for a treat to get named to) have some dignity remaining.

You like to complain. A Mizzou grad?

I don't believe the NCAA needs to reinforce the entitlement mentality of these Chamber of Commerce types who create too many bowls without putting any thought behind it. Things like golly gosh gee how many 6-6 teams will we have to pick from if any at the end of the regular season? Sure do hope there are no college grads, certainly not MBAs making those decisions. Just a matter of simple math. I get that going to a bowl is a reward for the players. But in no way does any 5-7 team deserve any kind of reward. If that's the case why not just hand out participation ribbons to everyone. Everyone's a winner!

Ask them...at this stage of the season and you're 6-6 or 5-7, it's a grind. Since August. It's now December.

"Hoo Boy...we *get* fifteen more practices so we can go to the Farmer's bowl!"

Don't think they're saying that about now.

You honestly believe this?? So you think College Football players would rather not play 1 more games hahaha!!. lol now that is hilarious!!
