Here is to the end of the rivalry

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm tired of this Iowa v. ISU rivalry. I hope that when the B10 and B12 go to 9 game conference schedules that this rivalry dies. I would rather see the 2 cupcakes like we have this year and Arizona than 2 cupcakes and ISU, and booking ISU and another good opponent with a 9 game conf. schedule would be ridiculous by any AD(though Barta may come through).

I'm tired of hearing about this game, and people slamming each other. It's just stupid. (If you disagree oh well). It's just 2 football teams playing each other in September OOC. I just say good ridance when it dies.

What's wrong with 1 cupcake + ISU + some other BCS team?

Why does it have to be 2 cupcakes + some other BCS team?

Frankly, I'm one of the opinion that its the tradition of rivalry games that is part of what makes college football so great.

You don't have to live in Ames and here the BS about Iowa. It's just annoying. And do you really want to take on ISU, Arizona then play 9 games against the B10. I would think that a team could get beat up pretty easily doing that. Also, some of the stuff that goes on from both sides of the fan base (aka some of the t-shirt ideas etc.) are disturbing and disrespectful, and if a kid saw/heard some stuff I would be embarassed for that person.

It's a waste of time, not football wise but personal life wise.

Where you fail is the idea that if Iowa and ISU stop playing in football you will stop hearing BS about Iowa in Ames.

With the way things are now at least we stop hearing anything from clown fans about Iowa football in early September in what... 22 out of the last 27 years?

The reason for that is because Iowa needs 7 home games per Gary Barta. When the Big 10 goes to a 9 game conference schedule, Iowa has to have 7 home games. Home revenue means everything in today's game. If Iowa wants to keep playing ISU every year when the Big 10 goes to a 9 game conference schedule, then Iowa will play 2 cupcakes at Kinnick.

Example 1:

4 Conference home games
5 conference road games
ISU game at Kinnick
2 cupcakes games at Kinnick
(We wouldn't be able to play a home and home with ISU and say Pittsburgh in this scenario because we need 7 home games)

Example 2:

5 conference home games
4 conference road games
ISU game at Jack Trice
2 cupcake games at Kinnick
Total of 7 home games

If we would drop the ISU game or only play ISU say like 2 years of out 6 then we could play a home and home with teams like Clemson, Pittsburg and ISU over a 6 year schedule. We could still keep the ISU game, just not play them every single year. That would allow Iowa to play 1 other BCS school all of the time. Iowa wants notoriety on a national level. Playing ISU and 2 cupcakes every single year does nothing for Iowa's non-conference schedule. Playing 2 cupcakes and say Clemson or Georgia would help Iowa on a national scale way more than playing ISU.

Jerry Denardo (sp?) likes Iowa's pre Big Ten schedule. He says by playing Iowa State and Arizona the Hawks will find out what they need to work on and that will better prepare Iowa for the Big Ten schedule. He thinks Ohio State's and Wisconsin's pre Big Ten schedules will not reveal as much to those teams thus giving Iowa an edge in team development.

ISU is not worthy of playing Iowa. This game is a favor to them and their high school stadium, a favor they neither deserve nor appreciate. Pollard's bush-league treatment of Hawkeye fans with his price gouging was the final straw.

Enough with it. Unless they want to play at Kinnick every season. Otherwise, shut it down. I don't even get a rise out of beating them anymore. They are like a mosquito that you swat.

I think if we stop playing ISU the BS will get worse because neither team wil have to prove it on the field. I would much rather play ISU than Ball State if those were my options

Nobody outside of the state of Iowa cares about this worthless game. Iowa doesn't have a choice of playing Iowa State over Ball State. See my post above. Ball State would be considered 1 of the 2 "cupcakes" that Iowa would play. We wouldn't play a home and home with Ball State so they would be considered a cupcake.

We could play Iowa State vs a Clemson, Maryland or Pittsburgh.

So an example would be:

Clemson
Ball State
Eastern Illinois

This would happen once the Big 10 goes to a 9 game conference schedule.

I love this game. It's actually one of my favorite rivalries, despite the hideous trophy. But think about it like this. We no longer have the Wisconsin rivalry, so by taking away ISU we would only have a real rivalry with Minnesota and the manufactured one against Purdue. In-state rivalries are always the most heated ones, even if they are mostly meaningless. Even when both teams are down, the Florda State-Miami game is a GREAT watch.

You forgot that new rivalry with NEBRASKA which will be better than this one. And in 2015 we might get the Wisky game back.

+1
ISU would have to stay at the expense of playing any other BCS conference team.

Iowa-Iowa State is not Ohio State-Michigan, nor is it Georgia-Georgia Tech, nor is it Auburn-Alabama, nor is it Texas-Texas A&M, nor is it USC-UCLA, nor is it Penn State-Pitt, nor is it Oklahoma-Nebraska, nor is it Wisconsin-Minnesota, nor is it Harvard-Yale.

Iowa and Iowa State only play each other on an annual basis because state legislators pressured them to do so. A forced tradition is no tradition at all. END IT!

I think a rivalries most important factor is the fans, and for both ISU and Iowa fans this is the best that we have. Neighbors against neighbors, brother vs. brother, you vs. that annoying guy at work...this is my favorite WEEK of the year, the actual game is jsut the icing on the cake for a rivalry, its the build up and the aftermath that makes it a great rivalry.

I felt this way before I went to Iowa City. Now that I have graduated and left, I couldn't care less about this "rivalry." Virtually no one in Iowa City cares about this game. Seriously. Beating Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin are far more satisfying. Beating Nebraska will probably be just as good.

Outside of Ames and the DSM metro, nobody cares about this game because the game doesn't matter.

I do believe there is a bit of this game means more to them than it does to us, so I won't be terribly sad to see it go away, especially if it means getting Wisky back every year.

I think you're pretty wrong there. If that was true I don't think myself and 1000's of other students would have gone from IC to Ames while I was in school just to tailgate and bash on my friends that are ISU fans.

I was 29 years old when the series resumed in 1977. I still have two unopened pepsi bottles with the Iowa and ISU mascots and the 12 to 10 score. Initially the series was interesting, but as time has passed the annual game has reached the point that I don't bother to watch. It is too awkward to be in a room as divided as my family; wife, one daughter, one son ISU grads and my other daughter, son, and myself Hawkeyes. I'm so glad when the game ends. I'm much more serious about the end result than they are so I prefer to just avoid watching.

For me rotating ISU on and off the schedule is more preferable.

Assuming we'll be playing 9 league games, I'd like to see us put together a "crescendo" 3-game, pre-league schedule. easy...harder....hardest.

Cupcake....Iowa State...top-25 team. As others have said, this will certainly help us ascertain just where we are coming into league play.

If you toss out Ball State this year, we have exactly that scenerio (EIU, ISU, AZ).

Thus, I would be in favor of continuing to play ISU if they were the #2 game (or Gawd forbid #3) in this scenerio.
