Hearing that Beathard did NOT break the circle of trust

One thing's for sure, this new news already has me twice as pumped for the game and iowa football in general than I was earlier today.

Like Jon and Deace said in the podcast, this game is absolutely fascinating, and it's got very little to do with the matchups between Iowa and Tennessee.

Something tells me that CJ will light it up in Florida and still transfer. How could CJ possibly trust Kirk after the lies this year?

My circle of trust angle is I wondered if they gave the interview to the Tennesean without going through proper protocols, since The REgister said they requested to speak with him but were denied.

I don't think CJ said anything crazy in that item...but the whole this is the first time the competition has been open this year was certainly an eye raiser...that can be worked with..giving an unsanctioned interview, probably not...this was sanctioned.

Which begs the question why didn't they let CJB talk with The Register

Well they are a pathetic excuse for a news paper that panders to, of all things, ISU.

That's my point, it was NOT a competition. In either case.

JR won the job in 2013 and 2014. One can certainly argue the merits, but based on the Purdue game, CJ was clearly not in "He took the job!" mode. Probably for the same reason Jake doesn't go more off-******. Not a case of "nerves", but a case of listening to the OC and not going to the other position coaches or the HC and voicing concerns.

Again, that's JRs biggest problem, IMO. He needs to speak out/up. The Maryland game, especially post-Weisman TD drive, should never have happened.
Hey moron, what he is saying is our coach led everyone to believe it was an open competition this year at QB. So CJ should have been given the nod as #1 after Purdue. Of course Clueless lied to everyone about the open competition.

Great post. Er...not so much.

I'm saying maybe our problem is more about talent at QB, i.e., recruiting, rather than just playing #2 because the fans want it.

I too, want Beathard to get a shot. We've seen enough of Rudock. All I'm saying is that some of the fans need to calm down about all the hyperbole about Beathard. Could he be better than Rudock? Yes, and that's why I think he deserves a shot. But people are making him like some world-beater because of play against a 3 win Purdue team.

I think people are angry, and quick to bag on JR and make CJ out to be some hero.

He deserves a shot because we've seen all Rudock can do. not because he is neceisarily better. Some people on this board are just so arbitrary and make all their arguments case by case. I cant say anything definitive about Beathard from his sample size other than he has a stronger arm than JR and appears to be quicker on his feet.

TLDR: Start and play Beathard. Dont have expectations.

QB is a problem because it looks like the most talented player isn't playing. Same thing can be said at RB. Same thing for WR.

The OL was a problem. Some of that is due to 2of the 3 mentioned above. The LBs weren't good most of the year and DBs were inconsistent. Other programs that are inconsistent on defense try to make up for it on the other side of the ball where they can be aggressive and hit opponent's weak spots.

Tevaun Smith isn't playing at WR? Who do you want at RB? You could certainly argue Canzeri, but it seems he was dinged up most of the year.

If we would have continued to repeatedly hand the ball to our "not best RB" against ISU and Maryland both of those games would have been W's...

I think the problems with these teams are a lot bigger than the symptoms we are trying to fix, instead of fixing causes.

So honest question. In the event JR outplays CJ (by no means do I expect that to happen) is the mentality the same heading in to the off season?

Again, absolutely nothing against CJ, but I've not seen enough to brand him a clear-cut starting QB. That's not to say JR is the better choice its simply saying that I haven't seen him enough to say that he is head and shoulders above JR, despite the fact he makes throws that JR doesn't.

See, that's exactly it, and why everyone is so mad at Ferentz. We've seen the same stuff for 24 starts now from JR, with tons of his play being totally underwhelming or even awful. Yet we've only been given glimpses of CJB other than his one start on the road, and his single half on the road. If CJB would have, at a minimum, been given 1-2 series a game all season to develop and get comfortable out there, we would know a lot more. The fact that at 24 starts to 1, we still don't know who the best QB is makes it clear that CJB should be given a chance to show he can grow and excel past where the other guy is.

Yes, when a QB is not performing, most football programs make a change at QB to try and provide a spark.

KF doesn't do that.

Not even in the PSU game in 2012 when Iowa was down by 30 or something like that. KF's answer, I believe, was that JVB gave them "the best chance to win". Even in a blowout loss? Really?

You may be right about that, but I still see CJB as at least pretty much at least on the same level as JR, or at least close, so the problem I've had (personally) is that KF sticks with JR through thick and thin, even when Rudock was clearly struggling. Second half against Nebby comes to mind. Maybe CJB comes in and provides a spark and Iowa wins that game? Guess we'll never know.

The only time CJB really got much PT was when Rudock was injured - 2nd half against Pitt, and Purdue.
