Heard On Sports Talk Radio

I could have swore I heard this yesterday afternoon on sports talk radio, which may have actually been the BIG network. I think they said there was not one previous 5* recruit that started in the SuperBowl this year. That really surprised me.

That is true.

Its more a rule of survival and quantity.

Not only does the 5 star need to develop into NFL talent, which some just wash out talent wise, but they need to avoid injuries, jail and academic issues.

Then they need to make the NFL team and avoid all those issues all over again.

Its just a war of attrition. The supply of 5 stars is so small compared to 3 stars or below, they are simply out-numbered.

It is also a sign that the longer time passes, the less meaning a high school rating is.

I think stars are so overrated. Give me a selfless 3* that out works everybody in the gym and in the film room over 2 selfish 5* lazy, rely on their high school talent guys anyday.

I have coached some D1 athletes and the hardest thing for them to grasp is that you are going to have to compete against the best from all over the state and country. Many of them never had to really train and got by on natural talent. Many have never had to come back from a significant injury. Some of these 5 stars don't have that mindset to work hard to improve and others pass them by.

Once there's mention of a skill position, this sentiment flies out the window.

THIS..

Yes, there was a Complete list of all Super Bowl starters on Seasqawks and Patriots.

Most were 2 and 3 star coming out of High school

No 5 stars in the bunch, so that should make some Wankers Shut up, huh?

Why? A lot of 3* WR are 6' with 4.4 speed. That guy works hard on his routes and hands, and how to read the coverages and incorporate into the offensive acheme... you have a helluva weapon

Yes, but how many 4 or 5 star athletes were in the college football playoff? College is where the kids with the natural talent who don't need another 4 to 5 years of development can flourish and stand out right away. By the time these 2 and 3 star players get to the NFL, they've had at least 4 years to continue to develop and get coached up. This bridges the gap for a lot of these athletes by the time they go pro. Basically their high school rankings give more of a gauge of projected talent in college, not necessarily their pro career which is 5 to 6 years down the road from when they were initially given their ranking.

I like me a hard working 3 star kid too and sometimes these recruiting services were just wrong and a kid they said was a 3 star should of been a 4. But in large the rankings are more accurate than not. Lets not pretend that Urban is dominating the conference based strictly on his coaching ability and schemes. Dude has athletes.

Also the big time stud 5 stars go early in the first round to teams that don't go to the super bowl.

The recruiting services do a good job with 5* and 4* rankings, they are the obvious ones. After that it is a crap shoot, they have no clue who is the 23rd ranked RB and the 37th. Plus they are only evaluating that kid based on his HS highlight tape. I'll tust any Power 5 coaching staff that has had the kid at a camp, seen him in practice or full games every time. They know their schemes, they know how the kids will fit into those schemes.

Yeah, like National Champion Ohio State does, right? I bet they didn't play any 4 or 5 star players this year.

I go back and forth on how much credibility to place on the ranking systems for high school football players. Yes, the guys who do the rankings are full time employees and likely have a good deal of knowledge when it comes to player evaluations. However, being a ol' stats guy in another life, when I see recruits ranked to 3 and 4 decimal places, I do have to chuckle a bit.

Why is everyone under the assumption that the talented 4 and 5 star guys don't work hard? They do, and yes there are exceptions that don't, and even then some of them are talented enough to still dominate 2 star guys. Thats just the way it is. Another thing, if we here at Iowa have the market cornered on the hard working, blue collar, high character, high integrity 2 star players that simply outwork the more talented 4 star players, then why aren't we winning? Why haven't we been ranked for 5 years? Why is the program headed downhill?

I guess its too bad Iowa doesn't play in the NFL because with all of the 2 & 3 star players they get maybe they would make a run at the SuperBowl.

In the B1G and in college football, where Iowa actually plays, 4 & 5 star players rule the sport.

It's called Sour Grapes.
"If we don't get any 4 or 5 star players then they must be lazy and lack character."----Derpy Hawkfans

Uhh.....let's see.

A player get his "star" rating as a Senior in HS, right?
He then has four or five years of 'position coaching' in college.
By the time he reaches the superbowl, he may have another 3-4 years of more 'coaching' for example.

That would be 8-9 years removed from when they got their high school star rating. And only two teams out of the entire league make it to the SB.

Thus, to assume *any* direct correlation between starting talent on a SB team and star ratings, is just stupid.

Did Vince Wilfork start in the Super Bowl? He came out of High School before the rankings and websites really started. He is basically the physical specimen with the measurables out of high school that the recruiting rankings are supposed to reflect. Wikipedia says he was second team all-american in high school, so about a four star ranking after you see he was from Florida and went to Miami.
