Hawks not close to Natty Champ caliber

This thread makes me think back to that 2015 season, where Iowa was within inches of winning the BTC and being a playoff team. That was probably Iowa's best team since Brad Banks yet they lost and then turned around and got smoked in the Rose Bowl. The mighty Michigan State champions went on and got smoked by Alabama in the playoffs.

Outside of the occasional Ohio State team the Big Ten just doesn't have what it takes to compete for the NC. There is a huge talent gap between the $EC and the rest of college football right now and I don't ever see that changing.
That is my point. That’s why i call that team a fraud. In classic Ferentz fashion, didn’t play anyone in September and got the classic soft west schedule. Finally playing someone in stanford and found out we were pretending all year. This is why the September scheduling nonsense has to stop. For a number of reasons. I can’t believe our big money alums don’t squawk about never having a nice road trip or seeing some competition. It’s a head scratcher. Ferentz will never compete nationally. He doesn’t try. He doesn’t recruit skill players to compete at that level, doesn’t hire coaches aggressively enough doesn’t schedule accordingly and doesn’t play the college style. Instead, he softens and simplifies everything and tries to be the king of the b10 west by playing defense, running the ball and throwing to the tight end. Positions he and his staff can either recruit to in the midwest or develop through walk ons. Beyond that, it’s all media driven because there is no substance behind it

The 2015 team was not the best Iowa team. They took advantage of an easy schedule and completely lucked out to beat Wisconsin.

I’d take 2009 over that team by 10 points. Check the rosters.

Even so the general point remains. Iowa can’t compete with those teams.

No they aren't. And I doubt they ever will be unless they start handing out cash to players like the national powerhouse teams do. And we both know that isn't going to happen.

But what's wrong with that? Would you feel better if we took on these tough teams in September and watch them get their butts kicked early on, finish 6-6 or worse, and end up in a crappy bowl if at all? Even though it was a bit of fools gold I enjoyed that season, it was fun to come within an inch of winning the Big Ten and a lot of memories were made people making the trip to the Rose Bowl.

I think Ferentz gives us what Iowa is capable of producing. Competitive teams that play in a bowl game every year with an occasional run at the Big Ten Championship. I don't see a team from Iowa ever being able to compete with an Alabama year over year, I think those expectations are unreasonable.

Yeah, with Stanzi you're probably right but not without. His injury in that Northwestern game will forever be ingrained in my memory.

Guys, guys, guys. I'm up for a negative bitch-fest as much as anyone, but let's not get carried away.

If Stanzi remains healthy in 2009 that team may well be in the natty conversation. Not natty-light, but the real thing.
I know it's fashionable to rip on that 2015 team, but with a better use of the talent (remember we had Wadley/Daniels/Canzeri/DMX/Kittle, etc.) that team would've shown better in the post-season.
And let's not forget 2002. Get rid of that ridiculous melt-down against Iowa State and Iowa may have been in the title game and Banks probably wins the Heisman trophy.

Remember this with your future posts and . . .

Yes. I would love to have a home and home with Colorado, Oregon St, vanderbilt, Georgia, Mississippi, Washington st, baston college, lsu, notre dame. The list goes on forever. Play one of these teams annually and give our fans road trips every other yr to enjoy. How does adding one road trip every other yr ruin your dumbed down dream? Iowa will never compete nationally with this coach. That’s been proven over and over. He doesn’t try and he isn’t interested in what that takes. He has the facilities for it and is paid like a program that should be but he isn’t interested in doing his part. He is interested in the pretending part and the local media lets him get away with it. The national media calls him out however

You need your head examined. Kf has never had a team (closest was 2002) talented enough to win nationally. The 2002 team was the best example and it was destroyed by usc. The 2015 team, I’m not sure was even a top 20 team as we never played anyone until getting mauled by stanford. Man vs child

So you admit the 2009 team probably wins it all with a healthy Stanzi. I PREVAIL AGAIN, undefeated, just like Gable!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the way national recruiting is going, there may only be 5 schools that can compete for a national championship. This year, I think there were only two teams. Notre Dame and Oklahoma were more in that next tier of teams and I think you could of substituted them for Ohio St. or anyone else and they still would of got crushed.

As far as Iowa goes in this format, Iowa must go undefeated and win the B1G championship. In 2015 we were one stop away from making the CFP. I don't think that team or this team or any Iowa team in-between would stand a chance of winning. But, I do think it's possible to make it.

I'd be ok with one game like that if it can replace Iowa State.

Go look at where Iowa was before Hayden Fry, is that what you want to go back too? We are closer to being like Illinois than being an Alabama. You have irrational expectations for this football program and KF. I'll agree that this season was a huge disappointment but I'm still please with the job KF has done overall.

The talent was there per NFL players. It was a heck of a matchup on paper. Iowa in O was not used to the speed namely Bush. Once adjusted it was fine unlike the Rose. The 2015 team was solid with a gamer qb.

The Rose was more about Iowa trying to play a hobbled defender and the ran right at him. Also KF didnt change the game plan unlike with the Badgers this year.

The main reason I know Iowa is much improved is not having to be perfect to win or in position to win.

The bottom line is that kf doesn’t truly try to compete nationally. If he did, he would play outside town in September, run a read option offense like the rest of college football, recruit running backs and receivers from the deep south instead of walk on receivers from South Dakota. He would also get speedy linebackers from the south. He’d drop his wierd obsession with tight end collecting and fullbacks and focus on what moves the needle in college. QBs, speedy backs and receivers. The goal should be to score as quickly as possible not grind possessions like 1970s NFL. Ferentz tries to coach like he’s in the league but he isn’t. He needs to coach the college game and worry about wins now and quit worrying about draft picks

One could argue that a slow rb with vision weighing 260 with tree trunks for legs, could do some serious damage to "fast" lb's.
Just saying.

But what good does it do to make it when you have such an inferior product? That’s what i call “pretending”

I'd like to see Kirk go into Paterno mode, lose the headset, and mumble to himself up and down the sideline--we could then install real coaches to take us to the title. This will require a new AD, but I think it's our best chance given Kirk's lifetime contract.

There is no arguing with stupidity. You aren’t dealing in reality and have clearly been listening to the Iowa media your entire life. Open your eyes to the rest of the world someday. You’ll be amazed

Face it. I watched clemson but not the second game. ND is damn good and they got manhandled. Clemson loses an all american DTackle and they say his replacement is like the #15 ranked NFL draft number for that position, a non starter. Their wideouts are awesome, they have a great QB with enough wheels to extend plays and pick up key yardage. Superb RBs.

#11 for Clemson was a former safety and now lbkr at about 230 lbs, 6'2"ish and the announcers said he runs a 4.3. Venebles is a crazy good DC and he had #11 spying on QB Book and totally took Notre Dames run game away. Book did little in the run game and their backs did little. And to play a Spy on a QB in a game you have to have 10 other great players.

Iowa has talent, they have enough talent to win the West, even win a Big 10 Champ. But they do not have the talent to beat current teams loaded like Clemson and Bama unless it was a 1 in a 100 stars perfectly aligned combination of Iowa playing perfect and the other team making crazy mistakes. That can happen but the chances are very minimal.

And the worst part of it is the Hawks would have to beat a Clemson in the Semi then beat a Bama type team in the Champ game. That makes it 1 in a 100 times 1 in a 100 or about 1 in 10,000 chance of happening. Ouch.

Tremendous difference in speed and power with these teams. Geez Auburn had 3 receivers on the field at one time who were faster than Rondell Moore of Purdue. How would we cover them?

I hope one day the stars align and we see the hawks in the final four and then at least in the Champ Game.

You're just now figuring this out? Wow. Good thing about the playoffs and bowl games is the Iowa Fan Boys see other teams play and recognize that Iowa ... Is just Iowa.

What people don't realize is that the powers behind the program are realistic about it all and seek to run a profitable and reputable $100M sports enterprise.
