Hawks Nest not a draw at Carver

It's exactly like what T.J. said in the article. "Perfect Storm." I got off work at 6 on Wednesday, then had homework to take care of and a midterm on Friday to study for. I didn't really feel like walking my *** 15 minutes across campus to and from CHA in the cold just to watch Purdue.

Oh heck no, we got to have all the old fart donors sitting in those seats. That way they can tell you to sit down and then leave with 5 minutes left to go in the games.

I will never forget attending Senior Day a few years ago, we were playing Illinois and I got a little vocal with the fans that were swarming up the steps and leaving with the game still in doubt and the Seniors getting recognized. It was embarrassing as I was sitting near Illinois fans who most stayed and acknowledged our Seniors even though they lost.

Seating needs to get changed, the people that want to sit on their hands and clap need to sit further up the arena. I would love to see the students get seats behind the benches.

The solution to that is to move the big azz farmers/donors further up in the sections and let them know that their new seats are far more accessible to the restrooms and to the exits for their long rides home. If it would help, change the color of their seats to gold so the rest of the arena knows they are V-E-R-Y I-M-P-O-R-T-A-N-T P-E-O-P-L-E.

What could the university have done to change your mind?

Yeah, heck give them bigger seats with nice arm rests and cushions. Then let them have their own roped off lane to get out of the arena. I am not suggesting not showing appreciation to the donors, it is how practice facilities get built and such but there are other ways of showing appreciation than by giving them the most visible seats (on camera) in the house.

The current seating configuration is 180 degrees from creating an exciting environment/strong student fan base.

I hate to compare it to Northwestern, but NU lets students in for free and gets kids to and from the arena for free. If it is a big game and NU has a chance to win, the students show up. When the Cats suck (which is most of the time) the students do not go and there are seriously about 50 kids there. The easiest way to fill up the student section is to have a good ball club that is fun to watch. Iowa hasn't had that bince late in the Alford years, but even when Alford had down teams, the kids didn't show up once the teams started choking in January and February.

Not a whole lot. It was smack dab in the middle of a busy week, across campus, at night after a very very long day and against a team I don't really care about. Even if offered a ride I doubt I would have gone..

Student here, and all I have to say is classes and exams the past couple weeks. Im as big of a hawkeye fan as there is, but exams have been killer. The timing of my exams doesn't help either. Always seems like I have one the day after the games, which means I'm studying rather than going to the games which I would much rather do :)

Oh, come on. Everyone knows students are chugging beer during exam weeks, except when they are tossing back the No-Doz on the night before big tests.

I know that when all you TRUE MEGA HAWK fans went to Iowa you walked uphill bothways to carver when it was -50, but some people dont want to do that and the casual fan wont do it. Having a basketball shuttle that picks up at the towers(slater and rienow), burge, and downtown would be huge for attendance. All in all, winning will help more than anything, but free tickets, better seats, and making it more accessible will help. If they dont want to give us courtside seats, I think they should consider moving the student section down more and widening it so it wraps free throw to free throw line on one basket.

p.s. It wasnt just the students who werent there for the purdue game.

I disagree. I sat in the Hawk's Nest when I was a student, and our experience was always resplendent. If I had to wager a guess on the issues pertaining to student attendance, it is because the current leadership of the Hawk's Nest puts priority on being weird (those giant cutouts of heads and wearing costumes), and being negative (chanting So-and-so s***s, etc.), and it turns off many students who want to go and enjoy the event, but instead are asked to act foolishly in a mediocre circus performance.

I can't say I agree with the idea that improving the location of the seats would be the right move at this point. When has it ever been a good idea to reward someone or a group of people for a behavior they have yet to exhibit? Sure, let them in free or really cheap to get them there, but make them prove they will consistently show up before making a change. If students can prove they are willing to show up consistently then I think a change can be considered. Yes the university could/should make changes to encourage students to come, but recent history shows there are going to be times when students aren't going to show up regardless of the incentive, based simply on the performance of the team. The university shouldn't give into the students until they prove they will show. If they continue to show support and the donors continue to leave (I was at the Purdue game last year when we were down by 3 with about 20 seconds to go and they were leaving in droves), then move them and let the students in.

I.) The student section's seats are awful.
II.) The cost for a student ticket is pretty much giving it away.
III.) If you are a student and a fan of college basketball, you should go to every game regardless of how bad the seats are.
IV.) Feller should give his seat to one lucky basketball fan for each game.
V.) The student section's seats are awful.

Yea our seats suck, but im there every game (sans bad games over break). The ChiHawks are key to a good crowd, and they will only come with wins.

UNI's student section placement is comparable to Iowa's. They bring in more students and they are much more rowdier.
And they have a theme song and stuff.

You sir, are an idiot. College students want to be respectful? LOL!!!

The current Iowa students know nothing but losing. It's going to take a few years of NCAA tournament teams to get the students back consistently. The SS was packed during the TD years and the first few years under Alford. Iowa basketball had a lot of momentum. They need to win consistently and be in the tournament to get the students back, thats just the way it is. The basketball program has zero momentum on campus right now, which is sad because most of us remember where it use to be.

Believe it or not, the vast majority of people are not comfortable exploiting anonymity on world wide web forums to insult strangers. Yes, the majority of people, even young adults, do not want to behave like disrespectful clowns. Just because you've developed the coping mechanisms to function with that kind of attitude doesn't mean many people relate to that.
