AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa wrestling team won 7-of-10 bouts to top Iowa State (5-1) on Sunday inside Hilton Coliseum, 23-9.

Tony Ramos and Mike Evans scored bonus points, and No. 8 Nick Moore defeated No. 6 Mike Moreno to help Iowa (4-0) win its 11th straight in the series and maintain possession of the Dan Gable Trophy.

“When we come to town we know we’re getting a battle,†said UI head coach Tom Brands, who improved to 9-0 all-time against Iowa State. “We had opportunities to put things away and widen gaps, and we’re missing those opportunities. We need to anchor what’s there and finish those scoring opportunities.â€

Evans opened the dual with a major decision at 174. He scored three takedowns, two nearfall points and2:19 of riding time to top Tanner Weatherspoon, 10-1.

“I think we were looking for bonus points, but when you go out and wrestle a team like Iowa State you know they want to keep it close,†said Evans. “That can make it hard, but it’s on us to create separation. We need to start doing that. We need to open up and break open the match.â€

Ethen Lofthouse extended Iowa’s lead to 7-0 with a 4-0 win at 184. Lofthouse scored a takedown in the first, an escape in the second, and added 1:44 of riding time to defeat Leland Weatherspoon.

Cory Clark, Ramos, and Josh Dziewa strung together consecutive wins at 125, 133, and 141 to help Iowa extend its lead to 17-6 after Iowa State had pulled within a point.

Clark’s 2:44 of riding time was the difference in an 8-7 win over Earl Hall.

“We’ve seen Clark battle,†said Brands. “He knows where he’s at and he’s aware. He won that match on awareness. He won on riding time and on keeping the guy down. He won that match because he’s pretty gutsy.â€

Ramos totaled seven takedowns and earned 3:43 of riding time in a 16-5 major decision at 131, and Dziewa used a pair of three-point nearfalls to rally past Gabe Moreno, 12-5, at 141.

Derek St. John earned a 5-1 win over John Nicholson at 157, which meant the team outcome was already decided when Moore met Moreno in the final match of the afternoon.

The pair exchanged escapes in the second and third periods before Moore came out on top of a scramble with 1:01 left in the third, eventually breaking Moreno flat as time expired to earn a 3-1 win.

“I got there and he was pretty deep in my legs,†said Moore, who is 2-1 all-time against Moreno. “It worked out for me, but it’s something where you have to get your hips back and get around, rather than getting in the scramble.

“Now it’s important to keep building from here, keep everything in perspective and take it for what it’s worth.â€

The Cyclones won at 197, 285 and 149. Kyven Gadson defeated Sammy Brooks, 3-2, at 197, and Quean Smith scored a takedown in sudden victory to top Terrance Jean-Jacques, 6-4, at 285.

Luke Goettl used a takedown with two seconds on the clock to defeat Michael Evans, 4-2, at 149.

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) at No. 14 Edinboro. Iowa returns home Dec. 12 to face Bufallo at 7 p.m. (CT).

Notes: Attendance was 6,261… Iowa retains possession of the Dan Gable Trophy… the Hawkeyes have won 11 straight in the series, including the last four meetings since the inception of the traveling trophy… Iowa owns a 7-6 advantage in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series… Brooks was making his first career dual appearance and his first appearance at 197.

John D Miller is the operator of this site ; ) so he very reliable and legendary to many hawkeye fans.
On the Meet definitely a disapointment, yes down 2 starters but we beat them 32-3 last year........Short time ftw
Go Hawks

Put the two starters on the mat and you would have had about the same score a last year.

Clark- Should have majored Hall. Got caught with the cement mixer twice, though said he wasn't expecting it. Controled the match from start to finish, had (almost?) three minutes of riding time and was close to turning Hall.

Ramos- Did what he could with a dead fish who refused to wrestle. Lost a lot of respect for Bauer after this one.

Jeva- Needs to learn how to score from his feet. Was disappointed he let the major slip away and couldn't recover at the end.

Kelly- Do something, anything offensively during the match. Black hole continues...

St. John- Typical DSJ grind it out, early season win. Was never in danger of losing.

Moore- You're very talented, please use your skills to put up points. Won the match without attempting a shot. This has to change or it'll be another early exit in March

Evans- Took him a little bit to get going, but did well. Was hoping he would get a turn at the end...good effort out of him.

Lofthouse- Should have destroyed this back up 174 pounder. He has the opportunity to open things up and refuses.

Brooks- I thought Sammy looked good against a returning AA up a weight.

TJJ-Bobby, please hurry back. Holy smokes.

Even if just Telford went it would have been close to last year. It ended up 23-9 and Bobby would have at the least majored Smith if not gotten a fall so that would have made it 27-6 or 29-6.

ISU is better then they were the last couple of years, but they still have a long way to go to close the gap on the Hawks and any of the other top 5 programs.

Iowa vs ISU not worthy of a post on the main page?

Goodbye Hawkeyenation

I was disappointed as well. I was expecting a big write up from you with your HN credentials and media pass. Aren't you still on staff?

Goodbye Hawkeyenation

You'll be back...

I was kind of surprised to not see anything on the front page as well. I don't think it's a slight from Jon. I just doubt he has the time to be able to cover wrestling along with football and basketball. And not to take anything away from wrestling, but it's the least popular out of those 3 sports. Personally, I would love to see more in-depth wrestling coverage, but I just don't think Jon has the time.

Just curious- what happened to you being the guy that covered wrestling for HN, Pin? I thought you did a pretty good job last season.

ISU is not a good wrestling program, why the need for front page news? Against Minn, PSU and OSU, yes it would deserve it but ISU? C'mon Tony, it's just not what it used to be. I like this forum and what knowledge the posters bring. I too was waiting for your write up, not Jon's a day and a half later.

1) amazing how far ISU has fallen
2) go hawks
3) I didnt watch the meet but it still seems like a pretty strong beat down

Wow, seriously? Are you gonna beat him up at recess? Friggin' back seat driver. Go get your own website and put it on the front page. Cripes, little man syndrome at its finest here. Good riddance!

Several of you posting about Pin's comment have no clue what he brought to this website. He was a rock here in a room full of mud. He and I had our differences but we shared a passion for Hawkeye wrestling. He has the same thoughts as I do on the current coverage of wrestling on this site. Many quality wrestling posters have left here for good reason over the last several years. Miller was always a pumpkin pushing fan first and that's fine. Unless the Hawks are winning a national championship he doesn't care. Until the coverage changes I am in the same boat as Pin.

listen we all want more wrestling coverage of course. but i don't think we can complain. with twitter, message boards, Flo, BTN, Espn's coverage, it's miles ahead of where it was even a few years ago. it's still a relatively niche group of fans no matter how much me or the next guy wishes that would change. An article on the front page would be nice, but at the end of the day HN site is about getting hits/views and however they feel the best way to do it is their prerogative. I'm a wrestling fan so i've never even been to the main page i don't think. Regardless, it's nothing to get all butthurt about. it's just an article on a website.
Pin i respect the effort you've put in to making this a site where wrestling fans can get info, but i think you're being a little sensitive here. So i hope you stay.

Exactly. It's the "I'm taking my ball an going home" attitude from an adult that is what is ridiculous.

I don't post a lot but I do come hear to catch up on news from Pin, WildTurkey, & CR. I understand the frustration, but I hope you guys can all see that there are a large portion of the audience that really enjoy your insight and knowledge and would hate to see u leave. In the long run wrestling itself will loose not because of someone not caring to put a story on front page, but because you guys are not hear sharing what u know and your insights. So if u feel you need to go then so be it, at least throw a post up as to where you are going so I know where to go to get Iowa wrestling info.
