HawkeyeGameFilm takes a look at the play of James Vandenberg against Michigan State. This was a low point for the Iowa passing game.

The difference between Iowa having a good season and a stomach ache season is what goes on inside his head.

He shoudl seek hypnosis for this phantom pressue. I've noticed the same thing.

If your QB cannot see, let alone hit, the receivers the offensive scheme breaks open, what in the hell is the point of playing the guy? I know he's got a cannon, I know he's a senior, I know KF and the team likes him...but at some point you gotta find out if another QB can locate wide open receivers.

It's not amusing.

One good thing to take away is that Iowa is finally trying to implement a screen game to counter blitzes. That was my number one problem with KOK.

I doubt it will do much good this year unless by some miracle jvb can regain some measure of composure, but it gives me hope going forward.

I have a problem with the politicking comments. Just give us the analysis without the extra bit about your feelings on a possible QB change.

Then don't read it. How many scouts/experts do you know that take a look at a players mechanical performance and then don't draw a conclusion summary? Get real.

As a freshman at OSU JVB came out throwing over the middle and made some plays but also showed that he was prone to throwing picks while doing it. The next week home against Minn almost every pass was outside the hashes even when Minn adjusted and had every defender except the middle linebacker outside the hashes. It appears his whole career will be like the Minn game his freshman year instead of trying to improve on OSU. Perfect example is a play illustrated by gameday. We have a two tightend set with Duzey as the H-back and Fed on the line. CJF runs an 8 yard out and is wide open, Duzey drags outside to take the linebacker away...should have been an easy pitch and catch for 8 yards and instead JVB throws it at Duzeys feet as he is running out of bounds that if completed would have been for 1 yard.

I will keep saying it...90% of the problem isn't our WRs, it is the QB play. We don't have the best playmakers in the Big Ten but we have guys getting open. When you add in the Weisman factor and the respect a defense has to give our oline it shouldn't be that hard to be an efficient passer. Drops haven't been a problem since ISU.

Iowa has good offensive line, good backs, good enough receivers and excellent tight end. GD called an excellent game at MSU. They need a quarterback who can execute, plain and simple and they arent getting it.

I watched the game on TV rather than in person, but it looked like a couple of those screens were set up well for big yardage, particularly on the interception.

Twice the screen would have gotten big yards, the int, and I think it was the third quarter when JVB rifled it over Weisman's head. Those would have gone for 30 yards. Sometimes it is just hard to watch him play.

JVBs footwork is horrible and more than anything shows he is not confident. He has happy feet and does not step up into the pocket to create more space for himself. He locks on to one receiver and NEVER looks back across the other half of the field. I've never played QB, but it's really obvious that his throwing fundamentals need addressed. His pocket presence and vision are higher-level skills that he has not seemed to be able to grasp. I'm certain he is a great guy, and a great team leader, works hard and represents his University and State as well as anyone could ask. I'm hoping the light comes on for him the second half of the season and he gets to have the kind of Senior year we were all hoping he would.

Amen. Arizona set up the game plan to completely stop our offense in 2010 when they brought blitz after blitz and O'Keefe did not get the screen game going at all. The Syracuse game in 2006 he called like 20 screens and they were amazing, but then they stayed in the bag of tricks until the middle screen to Robinson against OSU that ended his career in 2010. That was definitely O'Keefe's only weakness.

The first game of the year, there were very few times the WR or TE was getting open.

Since that first game, there have been multiple times that there has been a receiver wide open. Several of those times the play most likely would have gone for 30+ yards or even a touchdown.

But when the primary isn't open he immediately goes to the checkdown receiver which is why we saw countless times on 3rd down JVB throwing to a receiver behind the marker.

I think part of his problem is that he THINKS, based on his pre-snap read, that certain receivers won't be open so he won't even look that way. If he'd just trust his receivers to get open and be willing to hold the ball for just a split second more there would be so many more big plays available.

Now we just need to find a QB with enough talent to complete one.

The screen on the first drive that was picked might have gone for 6. There was absolutely no one in front of Weisman except 3 Hawkeye linemen.

I find it interesting that with at least two previous Iowa QB's, they were perceived as better in their junior years than in their senior years...Drew Tate and Ricky Stanzi. Now, I recognize that was perception and that there may have been mitigating circumstances. Drew was said to be fighting injury most of his senior year and, of course, like Ricky, was not QB ing the same team as a senior. Just wondering???

I have been a big JVB fan based on great performances last year and have given him the benefit of the doubt to the point of almost blaming the new coordinator for our problems. But, the game plans, according to what I have read, have been pretty darn good. And, Davis has received some accolades for some individual play calls at key times. At this point, the receivers are not perfect but seem to have made adjustments to the new system and we have seen a lot of open receivers missed by JVB. And, the drops we saw early are few and far between. I think I read that our go to guy has 6 catches in each of the last three games...not bad. So, that kind of leaves me with JVB as the problem. I trust that KF is still playing the guy he believes gives us the best chance to win; Rudock is probably not ready. I would sum up by saying that when I yell at JVB during a game, its not anger, its flat out disappointment.

Tate was hurt and Stanzi ended up getting pressured way more his senior year than he did his junior year. Plus, he lost his safety valve of Tony M. Another overlooked issue was that our D routinely made huge stops in 2009 and they didn't do that in 2010, which reduced Stanzi's opportunities and I think Stanzi took it upon himself to try to do too much to make up for the defensive play and also was overly cautious about turnovers.
