Hawkeyes Escape in Champaign

I won't lie, I turned it off when Illinois went up 5 and marble threw it away on the break. I cooled down and came back at 66 all. You're welcome hawkeyenation.

I hereby vote you not watch the Hawks the rest of the year! :)

Iowa needs some outside shooting. Very little with success, of late. Why there are Hawkeye droughts of made FGs. Why, IMO, Fran played 'unlikelys' like McCabe, Oglesby late in the game even with his dribbling and defensive liabilities, and Jok. Fran is looking for shooters.

Made FTs kept Iowa in this game.

Teams just need to zone D the Hawks now.

Iowa missed Woody's defensive presence in the middle. For some reason, Fran played Oleseni a whole lot more.

Hmmm....I wonder why that was.

Fran: We're Hawkeyes, sir. We play....we adapt, improvise, and overcome.

Fran: My men are hard chargers, Hawkeyenation! Devon Marble and Aaron White took a handful of young fire pissers, exercised some personal initiative and kicked @ss!

(My apologies, and credits, to Heartbreak Ridge).

Totally escaped with win.

White sat last 8mn of 1st half win illini made the run.

Jok and Clemmons were both in at same time during the run. Including Clemmons FUBAR on last shot.

Fran pulled the correct strings down the Stretch.

Coach groce said the 2nd half was the best his team has played in his 2 yrs. They will beat more teams at home. Book that one.

I honestly don't think Illinois will win multiple home games the rest of the year. This is their home schedule.

Indiana - W (OT)
Penn State - W
Purdue - L
Michigan State - L
Iowa - L
Wisconsin
Ohio State
Nebraska
Michigan

I will bet on Illinois in every one of those games....and do know worse than 2-2, and maybe 3-1.

But you never know and I'd love to see them lose all the rest....

We'll see. I think 3 of those teams are better than Purdue (won at Illinois) and Nebraska is comparable...IMO.

You make it sound as if a Big Ten team at home is a terrible team. We won an away game in the Big Ten against a team the has a chance to beat any given team against any team in the nation on any given night. Nice win Hawks!

As of right now, Illinois is the worst team in the Big Ten

Oglesby dribbles the ball very well, handles the ball well, passes well and has 5 turnovers for the season......

Not only that, I wish he and Jarryd would shoot the three much more, might have helped against MSU the other night when they shut us down inside for various reaons. Josh is shooting over 50% from the three: 16 of 30. Jarryd is shooting a little bit under 50%: 13 0f 27.....

I think Josh will keep expanding his role this year, but more so next year when Dev is gone. He's actually a pretty good player who I think some will be surprised by next year with what he does.

I am a 'little' bit concerned with the timidity of Jarrod Uthoff. Hopefully he'll develop a mean on this offseason and more of a 'take charge' attitude.

Olaseni had 15 pts, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Are you watching the games in analog?
How many times did you see an Illinois player drift into the post and either get by Oleseni or easy pick and roll to the basket 'cause Oleseni didn't rotate back? That's what I'm talking about. Blocks are great. Good defense is better.

Another poster who thinks using the wrong stats proves his point (of good post defense). Maybe, if Oleseni had better post defense, he wouldn't need as many blocks? Hum?

I wouldn't pin those all on Gabe. When a perimeter defender gets beat on a dribble-drive, bad things happen.

Partially agree with your post defense comment, but don't play oblivious to the fact that Olaseni rebounds at a much higher level then Woody at both ends of the floor. There was a definite reason why Gabe earned majority of the minutes. While Woody may be a better post defender the fact is that Gabe outplays him at other aspects of the game and definitely earned his minutes.

Olaseni had a very good game last year against Illinois in Carver...all of those blocked shots. Some guys do well against certain teams. It looks like Gabe enjoys playing against the Illini.

I am thinking the same thing.

Woody is a better post defender. And probably a better offensive threat. What does Gabe excel in? The block.... Some like Gabe 'cause he blocks a lot of shots.... IMO, certainly doesn't warrant a limit of Woody's minutes... If you want an Iowa win, that is. Now if some are looking for flamboyance.... as the media is...

Better at drawing fouls and a better free throw shooter.

i wrote this but and I'm correct in the drawing fouls.... Gabe has shot 75 in comparison to Adam's 47 free throw attempts but I was surprised to see Gabe is shooting 71% and Adam is shooting 72%.

i expected gabe to have a much higher % than woody.

To play as well as they did to get up by 21 only to fall apart later is so maddening and inexcusable. I see this as a Fran/ coaching issue. If we are good enough to run them out of their own building he has to be good enough to not allow the team to fall apart. Like Fran but that was coaching IMO

I don't know, does Gabe attempting more free throws mean he's a better offensive threat than Woody? I think Gabe's offense is limited to just under the basket (except for that one jumper in the Michigan game?) Can Gabe shoot the baby hook? How many short jumpers has he tried? If you were the Iowa coach, is that enough to warrant a limiting of Woody's minutes.. if you want to win?
