Hawkeyes Escape in Champaign

You make it sound as if a Big Ten team at home is a terrible team. We won an away game in the Big Ten against a team the has a chance to beat any given team against any team in the nation on any given night. Nice win Hawks!

Illinois is a bad team. Credit to them they played hard last night but judging from the first half of the conference season this is the worst team in the B1G.

Was really a fun game to watch. As a glass half empty pessimist, I'm usually one of the first to expect the worst, but for some reason I never doubted Iowa in this game.
Still scratching my head over the amount of PT Clemmons got in this game while Mike sat.
I continue to be:
amazed at the progress of Gabe Olaseni
frustrated with the play of Uthoff
encouraged by Aaron White
dumbfounded by Fran's player rotation

Try watching the whole game instead of just following the ball. Woodbury does things defensively and away from the ball that lead to stops and easy baskets. Remember that While ally oop? Go back and review that play away from the ball, you will see that the reason why White was so wide open was because of an awesome screen that Woodbury had set on the guy covering White. Illinois got a ton of points on the dribble drive when Olaseni was in there, Woodbury challenges those drives to stop them while Olaseni lets them go and tries to block it.

I like Olaseni, and it was obvious Fran was going with the hot hand. But Iowa has 2 really good centers and which one is better IS debatable.

I'm just a fan and don't have great knowledge of the ins and outs of the game. But just from the fan perspective it appears that the lane is completely wide open when Gabe is in. It also seems that Gabe isn't the best at staying home on inbounds plays.

I've made it no secret here, that I really like how Woodbury plays defense and think its the most underrated aspect of this team.

Absolutely agree and I would argue that Woody's play is more consistent.

Gabe has the potential to have big nights like last night and I think it was the NW game but he also had his big game but has a game like Michigan where he looked lost.

Where as Woody probably won't score more than 10 but is always solid.

Well said. Think of the teams who would love to have just one of these guys.

Fran has done the team a service starting Woodbury from day one. He continues to improve though not by leaps and bounds.

Iowa needs some outside shooting. Very little with success, of late. Why there are Hawkeye droughts of made FGs. Why, IMO, Fran played 'unlikelys' like McCabe, Oglesby late in the game even with his dribbling and defensive liabilities, and Jok. Fran is looking for shooters.

Made FTs kept Iowa in this game.

Teams just need to zone D the Hawks now.

Iowa missed Woody's defensive presence in the middle. For some reason, Fran played Oleseni a whole lot more.

I just KNEW you would come through with some laffy!

Oglesby dribbles the ball very well, handles the ball well, passes well and has 5 turnovers for the season......

Not only that, I wish he and Jarryd would shoot the three much more, might have helped against MSU the other night when they shut us down inside for various reaons. Josh is shooting over 50% from the three: 16 of 30. Jarryd is shooting a little bit under 50%: 13 0f 27.....

Well its good the Hawks have both of them then.

Oglesby takes one or two dribbles. Stops. Gets harassed. Passes.

From all of Iowa's shooters, Iowa needs some consistent outside shooting somewhere... Jok is an outside shooter. You figure it out.

As mentioned before, Josh is shooting over 50% from the three: 16 of 30. Jarryd is shooting a little bit under 50%: 13 of 27. I was wondering if Josh is a point guard who should be dribbling more. Seems like the better teams pass the ball more. It is a bit quicker than dribbling.....

I ws wondering why Clemons was getting so much playing time also. Someone mentioned that he was in so long because he is the better defender while Gesell is the better scorer when he shoots. I think two of the past few games he didn't take a shot. Wish he would shoot more.....

One neat thing is either Woodbury or Olaseni were on the court the entire game. I don't think that has happened all season.
Nice catch.

I can't tell if that is a good thing or not as much of a rollercoaster ride this was.

Definitely a good thing, usually they both get into foul trouble but Olaseni avoided getting into foul trouble and that is probably part of the reason why he got so many minutes. During crunch time it is common to see both of them on the bench with McCabe, Basabe, and White playing the post positions. I am not sure anybody else gets to that offensive rebound that Olaseni grabbed with his long arms in the final minute that sealed the win.

Clemmons had 3 assists and 1 turnover...and 1 case of horrible clock management. Until the premature shot right before half I thought Clemmons was playing well.

I can think of 3 times off the top of my head that Clemmons' man tried to drive and was stopped dead because Clemmons moved his feet and got in front of him. Clemmons adds depth and does some things well...different skill set than Gesell. We'll need him a lot more next year with no Marble.

I like Clemmons on the defensive end. He is the best man defender vs quick guards on the team. He is very good moving laterally and the more into the flow of the game he gets the better he is.
