Hawkeyereport saying Coco Ware likely not coming to Iowa

This concerns me, too. Fran seems to have made a number of smart moves so far; I would be even happier if he had landed some immediate help for next year.

But, he's done this before. I think it's important for the Hawkeye fan base to give him the room and time to get it right.

My take is that he isn't going to make a scholarship mistake on a player that he hasn't had much time to recruit or get to know.

My gut tells me that unless he has a near 100% comfort level with a guy he is banking the scholarships and working on guys he can recruit and learn about in the 2011 class.

Did you ever think that maybe the last coach wasn't getting as much from his players who should have all been much better and are much more capable? Did you ever think that this staff may improve nearly every one of them? Did you ever think that a new strategy will change things for the better? We may have not added much, but who is to say we needed to add much to improve a lot?
What if Marble goes off? What if this opens up Gatens and May? What if Basabe is actually better than Fuller? Marble will be better than Lickliter and Bawinkel combined I expect, I know I would make that trade.
Of course we would welcome another recruit that the coaching staff wants, but... I am excited to see what we have now!

The only reason that last coach did not get as much out of the players as possible was because Lick 'failed'.

How do you go from being a National COY to being an absolute failure? Although, he was compensated very nicely for his shortcomings.

Are you basing this off of W/L record?

I can assure that there were more than 4 teams who were better. I can also assure you that 99% of the people who actually watch college basketball would agree with me.

As for this recruiting mumbo jumbo and the overhype people are giving Franny, we still need to remember something:

Iowa is coming off the worst 3-year span in the 100+ year history of the program. In the HISTORY of the program.

We are not exactly a 'go to' school on the lists anymore as far as mens hoops is concerned.

I am basing it off of having 20 wins each of the last four season, making the NCAA tournament each of the last 3 seasons and pulling off 2 NCAA wins over Vanderbilt and OSU. That is a better resume than every Big Ten except the 4 that I named. And you and the other "99%" of college basketball fans should look it up. Name another Big Ten team besides the four I named and prove it to me with their resume.

My point was to dismiss the talent that Fran was bringing in at Siena would be a big mistake because he obviously was recruiting some very good players. I would say no doubt that the talent he was bringing in to Siena would have competed for the mid level of the Big Ten. The mid level of the Big Ten sounds pretty good to me right now. Obviously that is not the long term goal but I believe Basabe is a very talented player which would have been an upgrade over the past 3 years.

Do official "walk-ons" count as part of the roster limit in terms of Iowa players being on the same team?

Can anyone answer this? I wondered the same thing. Does it have to do with the number of players who can dress and be on the bench?

I agree it will be exciting to see how some of these guys play in a new system. You really don't know how each player will respond. That will be the fun of next year especially if you actually see improvement as the season goes on. And I agree that at least on paper we should be a better team at 4 of the 5 positions and deeper than last year after Tucker was kicked off. However, I don't think with Fuller leaving and not adding somebody who can really create off the bounce that next year you will see much improvement in the win total.

I always thought the roster size was 15, with 13 schollies allowed.
I don't think that is true, though, as the bigger programs sometimes have 16 or 17 players on the roster, IIRC.

I don't have the definitive answer, though.
