Hawkeye Punters Hoping Psychology Leads to Better Results

I really do believe that punting is a difficult skill, but after watching this, I have a seriously hard time believeing that we can’t find a single person to do a better job. This is a B1G program, there’s not really an excuse for being the absolute worst in the entire country at anything.

No. I don't. Do you? How easy do you think it is to punt a football? Come on, man.
Here's the problem, bud. Soccer is catching on in a major way and I guarantee you that there are kids on Iowa's campus from the west burbs of Chicago or the west burbs around Des Moines or even from near the packing plants up to Mason City who have been playing soccer bince they were 4 who, if they practiced the form and catching the snap for a few weeks would do materially better than 30 some yards per attempt. It is not unheard of for D-1 schools to do open tryouts and to find a guy who can absolutely hammer the rock. Hell, my buddy is married to a soccer player from Wake Forest and I'll bet some of her soccer friends (who have the body type of Sam Mills from the college lifting program) could average 40+. I've seen some of these chicks kick a soccer ball a country mile.

I'm not at all a conspiricay theorist, but I believe whole heartedly that Uncle Bruce had at least a small part in Rastetter making the team. I refuse to believe that after he started laying the biggest turd in Hawkeye punting history that LeVar wouldn't go out and try to at least do something.

Yet we've seen you post that info about six times. Pretty Alex Jones-worthy, if you ask me. :)

You guys are funny. TK liked you post so you got that going for you. Smart minds think alike. Have a good one.

Michigan and Florida have both had open tryouts. It ain't 1968 anymore, pops, back when Jan Stenerud and Pete Gogolak were the only two soccer players in America. Hell, Jan Stenerud, was even a walk-on who got his role by happenstance. If we have a punt of 20 yards or less that ain't blocked or an attempted coffin kick I am holding you personally responsible!

Well if Rastetter is once again the punter and isn't improved over last year, then your theory may be true..

Have you ever watched a college punter kick when they are just messing around, not worrying about snaps, rush, or coverage? They boom the hell out of every kick. That is not the hard part of their job. Add in the reception of an unpredictable snap, time-constraints, directional considerations, an oncoming rush, the need to cover, and tens of thousands of screaming fans, and things get much, much harder. Don't assume that because you know someone who can boot a ball 40 yards under completely stress-free conditions that it is an easy task.

No one here ever said it was easy or that kicking was the only thing they did.

Rastetter didn’t just suck at punting last year, he punted horribly relative to every single one of his peers. I don’t know how else one can spin it. To think that there’s no one out there who could have done a better job at all those things you mentioned is obtuse.

My opinion which is worth what you paid for it, is that he went waaaaaay to far into the season playing like ass and that they should have made at least some sort of move. It couldn’t have gone a whole lot worse and if it did then go back to Rastetter. At least you tried at that point.

Agreed on the performance of Rastetter last year. But his peers are all college punters as well. To think that there is someone walking around on campus who would be better than him is obtuse.

His own starting QB can punt better.

1) Doesn't have to be walking around on campus.

2) What's the downside of trying?

I guess that is how I interpreted "open tryouts." Ask the intramural soccer and flag football players by the football complex to see what they could do. After all, if they are not students, they are not eligible to play for the Hawks this year, right?

If you are saying they should have done a better job of getting someone else on the team that can do the job, I am hoping they have, and his name is Gersonde.

Probably. But then again, his own starting QB would probably be an elite college punter if not for the fact he was an elite college QB.

Rastetter averaged 40.2 as a varsity punter in HS. Stanley had yearly averages of 44 (fr), 45.6 (so), and 44.9 (sr; he missed most of his jr year with injury).

Is it realistic to ask your starting QB to be your punter? I am not sure. Anyone on here familiar enough with the intricacies of weekly special teams planning to know if it is doable?

In terms of additional exposure to risk, you sure would hate to have Stanley pull a hammy or mess up his back while he was punting.

I understand the "let Stanley punt" sentiment, but if you've ever sat behind the bench you'll know that at soon as the offense is off the field the QB is hauling ass over to the headset to talk to the OC up in the booth and review the drive. They don't get a lot of time and they're under the headset for most of the defensive series. If the other team goes 3 and out it could be only a couple of minutes.

Myself if I'm a coach I want him talking to Brian and figuring the offense out, not worrying about punting and possibly getting steamrolled on the return.

It's not that fucking hard of a concept guys. Put Gersonde in there and let him rugby punt like he gets paid to do.
