Hawkeye Defense Absent Again in Loss at Nebraska

Watching a team play once and then completely ignoring stats is something you agree with? I didn't expect that from you!

Well since it isn't "stats" that you based your argument on. More accurate would be completely ignoring 1 stat.

Also I will point out that even if I accepted that Nebraska was the 87th best offense in the country. That would still put them in the top 75th percentile. Yet you call them a "bad offense". Now who is completely ignoring stats?

You have a problem with Ken Pomeroy and you're taking it out on me instead. Your logic behind it is seriously flawed though but this isn't just some opinion I'm forming.

You left off Gonzaga because they are Gonzaga but included Saint Mary's who beat them at their place and is ranked ahead of them? Odd. Virginia Tech is a top 25 offense but you think Nebraska is better than them offensively because you watched them hit open three's against us and you have admitted only watched them play that one time this season. Haha!

Lol again you contort threads to yarn to conform to your opinions. Sure St Mary's beat Gonzaga by 3 points in the last minute of the game. If you want to compare the 2 teams let's disclose that Gonzaga has played OSU, Florida, Texas, Creighton, Villanova and Washington while only losing games in that stretch to Florida and Nova. Ya I wonder who the better team is.

Nope it's you that I have a problem with. Ken Pom ranks these things with an algorithm programmed over a decade ago. Even he isn't arrogant enough to say that it is fool proof. Meanwhile you cuddle up at night with your Ken Pom blankie. It must kill you that Iowa is ranked 40th in adjusted offense. I assume that you believe that with no athletes (your words) that we are the 40th best offense in the country.

All I'm saying is St. Mary's is ranked ahead of Gonzaga, beat them at their own house and is better offensively than them. Those aren't my opinions. Have you always been against KenPom or is this the first year?

I heard on the radio today that Nebraska was 12th in scoring in the league going into the game Saturday too. That was them playing some bad defensive teams in conference play too. They are 10th now, I'm sure they are thanking the Fran bump!

You watching one game is fool proof compared to KenPom obviously haha! I actually think we're a pretty decent offensive team this year. Our offense is the only reason we've even got to 11 wins because our defense is the worst defense I can remember seeing from a major conference team.

Adam you have to remember, twins thinks Kenpom has every team ranked in the exact right order in every single statistical category. He thinks Iowa is exactly the 40th best offense in the nation and he will argue all day that we are a better offensive team than the 41st ranked team and we are a worse offensive team than the 39th ranked team. There is no gray area.

Lol ya I know. I just couldn't hold myself back this time.

He's 100% correct in this regard. No way this Iowa offense is the 40th ranked offense in the country. We play in a bad conference (this season) and played a fairly soft OOC schedule. Every time we've played any team with a defensive heart beat, they've held up way below our season avg PPG. That's why I don't put much stock in team stats while the season is in progress. Anyone that's watched this team, knows that they are bad on both ends of the floor. If someone is claiming we are the 4th best offense in D-1 basketball, I'm going to ignore that someone.

I'm sure you are aware KenPom calculates in strength of schedule and who you play to come up with his numbers and ratings.

Also not entirely true. Ken Pom' s website says he calculates for "competition" level. Ken has publicly stated before that this area is the least scientific part of the equation and that sometimes he must rely on "educated opinions" based on expertise. This is one of the main reasons his statistics have taken so long to be accepted by the selection committee.

He has also said that in many years the ranking margin between 20 and 100 is sometimes razor thin.

Ken Pom rankings are just yet another tool for studying a team. There are of course others as well that have varying results. I will say though that for a betting man Ken Pom is pretty handy because it is one of the most accurate models for predicting head to head outcomes. Last I checked he had a 71% accuracy through conference games. If you play the field that will consistently earn you more than you lose.

You're smart enough to know Nebraska isn't the fourth best offensive team we've seen this year.
I didn't say that. Nor would I make that claim about any team, in any season. It's too subjective. They shot lights out against us. 57% FG/ 58% 3FG/75% FT. That's well above their season avgs. I can see why someone would be impressed by that offense. That's the first game I watched them play, so I couldn't say one way or the other. At this point, I'd say that every team's offense looks really good against this Iowa defense.

Out of curiosity, where would you rank the Nebraska offense based on the offenses Iowa has played to date?

Wrong. Bad breaks were a factor and officiating was a factor. Just becasue they weren't big factors doesn't mean they were no factors.

And I don't know how anyone can talk about point guard problems after a game where we played great on offense.

I am not completely certain, but there is a possibility that Garza being called for a touch foul at 19:40 in the first minute of the game and then being called for his second touch foul less than a minute later at the 18:41 mark had an effect on the game. Personally, I haven't a clue if it did or not.....

It'd be one thing if the poor defense was for an isolated game. You could chalk it up to Nebraska just shooting well.

It wasn't.

Nebraska shot too many uncontested jumpers, which often came from ball movement and dribble penetration. Eventually, as it has shown time and time again this season, the Iowa defense will break down.

Nebraska and Rutgers are two of the lowest scoring teams in the league. We made them look like the Showtime Lakers.

The Hawkeyes are allowing 84.1 points per game in conference play, dead last and four points more than the No. 13 team, Illinois, and an astonishing 20 more than No. 1 Ohio State.

Overall, Iowa is allowing 77.3 PPG, which ranks 299th out of 350 DI teams.

After tonight's game at Carver against Minnesota, which is a tossup I believe, we, more than likely, go on a 4 game losing streak. Three away games, at Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan, The home game is against Michigan State.....

This could be very painful to witness.....
