Halftime tribute a disgrace.

The halftime tribute to Sharm was an absolute disgrace. Not a single video clip. Over a dozen former players and not ONE of them was introduced.

Whoever organized this should be fired. I am sending Barta an email and I encourage others to do the same.

I guess the grade school baton twirlers were more important.

So what did they do then??

Trotted out about 15 of Sharm's former teammates and players (including members of Iowa's runner-up team of '55-'56) and his widow. Barta presented the widow with a game jersey, and that was basically it. No introduction of the players...no video clips of Sharm...no remarks to the crowd. Only a few comments by the public address announcer.

Pretty pi$$ poor. Someone should be reprimanded for that.

Agreed. I honestly had NO idea who this guy was. I would have loved to see a few clips and hear a few words from his teammates to actually learn a little bit about him.

Sharm was one of the original Fabulous Five at Iowa. Had a great career at Iowa, then took over as coach for about 6 or 8 years.

At least they had the SS patch on the uni's honoring him. Unless I didn't catch it at the beginning of the game, I didn't hear the announcers once reference or explain the SS patch. I really didn't know what it was for until reading this.

I would have liked to have the names of the former players in attendance announced. They go to the trouble to come to the game to honor their former team mate or coach, and don't get a chance to be recognized by what I'm sure would have been an appreciative crowd. I didn't have the closest seats for this game, but I believe one of the players to have been Nolden Gentry. Anyone else recognize any of the anonymous players out there?

Clearly they should have been announced (introduced) and there should have been a short clip about Sharm's career. Was absolutely no sense from the TV broadcast that there was even a halftime ceremony.

Is it fair to think that Barta should have been aware of this and perhaps reviewed the plans for honoring Sharm? Really seems like someone was asleep at the top.

When I first saw this I thought you meant the little baton girls and I was like wow harsh! But now that you mention it that SS presentation was pretty bad and everyone in my section including my wife was like "What is going on?".

That is too bad. Sounds like the university missed a great opportunity to recognize Sharm and some of this teammates.

I have not been real impressed with many of the marketing ideas coming out of the university. Last-minute announcements about a "blackout" or "gold rush." Pumping up a freaking burrito at home fball and basketball games.

Lame in-stadium audio experience (with the exception of Back in Black). Not sure all of this ties together but bottomline is seems the marketing people could do a much better job at coordinating efforts and establishing some creativity.

Got this response from Leslie Steerlage today:

Gary Barta requested I respond to your e-mail on his behalf.

Thank you for your comments and concerns on the tribute to Sharm Scheuerman.

Sharm’s teammates, former players, and his family made it very clear from the very beginning that this tribute was to be for Sharm and not them. They indicated this throughout the planning process. The half-time tribute was to be for Sharm and only Sharm. All parties agreed the proper place to memorialize Sharm with his teammates, players, and family was at a reception following the game and not at a public venue. The athletic department honored their wishes.

Thank you for your understanding!

Go Hawkeyes!!!

If that is what the former players wanted, then I'm fine with it.
