Had a Debate with Nebraska Fan About National Championships

Prior to the playoff era, evaluating how many national championships a team can claim is EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE.

Nebraska claims 5 MYTHICAL championships. They pretty much hang their hat on the final AP poll, but for most of the AP poll era, the final AP poll was taken BEFORE the bowl games.

Iowa can easily claim 4:

1921
1956
1958
1960

In all of those years, at least one major polling service put Iowa at #1 at the end of the year. In several of those years, more than one service rated the Hawkeyes #1.

What say you???

Yes, you can say that Iowa has finished #1 in the polls. I think a lot of people think of the 1958 team as the lone Natty Champ team and I can go with that. I also think that the 1921 team could be thought of wining a N Champ.

Now, why even discuss this, well because it is history and fun; it shows that the hawk program has been at the top multiple years; it shows that along with 11 Big 10 Titles Iowa football is pretty good overall; you can discuss it along with the fact that Iowa has been selected or earned the right to play in a lot of bowl games and have a pretty good record even when they play up in the competition. The hawks have also finished high in the Big 10 standings a number of times and in the Top 25.

Nothing wrong with this discussion.

Our neighbors in Ames have very little football glory to talk about. I was around some young ISU fans a few years ago when they upset #3 Okie St and these young fans thought they did these upsets all the time and they had a great history. I am not sure they have even ever won the big 8 or big 12 in 100 years.

There you go again telling people how not to act on a very simple, non-threatening subject. As the OP said it is just an exercise.

can you imagine what the mass hysteria in Nebraska will be like when Osborne passes away? The guy is 82 years old now.
Mass suicides, former players in prison cells across the nation giving up all appeals, red '89 Trans Ams with black duct tape strips down the side, and the first football coach to lie in state. If they have a capitol building I guess. Do they have a capitol building? What's nebraska's capitol?

No, no, no...I'm not going to ignore you, sweet cheeks. Don't flatter yourself.

That graphic was to show you how to ignore me.

Haha, funny. And I am not going to ignore you. I'll agree and disagree with you as warranted. I think I have only put one person on ignore after all these years on the site. I cant remember who it was but many did not like his tripe and also ignored them.

I honestly don't think they have EVER been to a bowl game after Dec. 31. They have history. They have historically been grouped with some of the worst Div 1 programs in football, similar to Kansas. They are having success now and great for them. I hope they turn it around and gain consistency. But, historically they are known as a low tier team.

I'm pretty sure they have never won or shared the top in conference play.

I grew up in Des Moines but became a big hawk fan early by 1957-8. I followed and like ISU back then. My oldest brother enrolled at ISU in about 1959. I really liked their Bball program along with the hawks in the 1960's.

But on Saturdays back in those days and into the 1970's when Iowa football was playing a great intersectional non-conference schedule against Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon St, Penn St, Syracuse, and other top teams ISU was playing Pacific, Northern Iowa, other D-1 AA teams, Drake, which wasnt bad but not a power.

I just could not get real excited about ISU football on most Saturdays.

And conference play back then was Iowa against Minny, Purdue which was good, OSU, Mich St which was great in the 60's, and Mich. The Big 8 was basically two decent teams a year OU and NEbby.

Which begs the question, if by today's standards to even compete f a chance to play for a NT, sos matters. Nebraska's claim to NT's buy ap vote means even less.
Not only was it an ap vote, nobody was taking sos into account. Which also means depending on Iowa's schedule with one loss to Minny we could have still been NT's.

It's all fun, and I'm sure not all teams deserved the ranking and NT's they did. Some got robbed. It was the flaw in the system.
Because as was pointed out, with ISU's schedule back then, say they went undefeated in a year Ok and NEbby weren't very good. What really did they accomplish?
Same with Nebraska and Ok back then.
When your schedule is basically playing HS teams 85% of the time and then running a pretty shady program on top of it.
Come on.

Their 1994 "championship" is also tainted. There was a monster Penn State team that also finished undefeated that year.

Which got knocked down for easing up on Indiana and "only" winning 35-29. That PSU team would have crunched the crap out of that Nebraska team. The following year, though, that Nebraska team was legit powerful.
