Gun to head do the Hawks make the NCAA Tourney?

I agree. And I really think 10-8 is our floor...assuming no significant injuries to the starting 5.

Yep, Mich St, Purdue and Maryland are good, after that, Iowa is just as good as anyone else. And even if we don't have any resume making wins, like at UNC last year, we should be high enough in the RPI that it really won't be needed.

It would be nice if Fran could make the tournament for once.

Gun to head... I'll say yes, but a lower seed and early exit.

Unless someone emerges, this team seems very soft in the paint, and that isn't going to be a good thing when conference play arrives. How do you beat teams like MSU or Purdue in that case? Looks like Iowa is going to live and die by the 3. Probably will win a couple games they shouldn't, and will probably also acquire a couple bad losses on cold shooting nights.

It will depend on how teams like Marquette and WSU pan out the rest of the year, but as of now, Iowa does not have a marquee non-conference win, unlike last year (@UNC).

Could REALLY have used that win at ISU for the resume. Sigh...

Other than those 2 teams we will be fine in the paint. Hopefully we can steal one of those wins by being on fire from 3.

Don't know if very many of you pay attention to RPI but a few years back when Franny and the Hawks started to become a real threat to make the NCAA tournament I began to really keep an eye on it on a daily basis. I am not really a believer in the phrase " Good loss" but as I have watched the RPI recently before and after the ISU game it defiantly proves a good strength of schedule in the non conference part of the schedule is important. Just prior to the ISU game the Hawks had an RPI in the range of 75 to 80, just checking the RPI today the Hawks RPI has risen to 25! As you can see even in a close loss too ISU the Hawks cut there RPI by some 50 spots! Imagine how high it would be if the Hawks would have finished the Cyclone's off and gotten the victory. Win the game you are supposed to win and sneak an upset or two in there and the Hawks will go dancin' again! GO HAWK

We actually benefited by the double whammy of a top 5 team ON THE ROAD. The RPI loves teams that play top 50 RPI teams on the road.

Our RPI will most likely take a hit these next 2 games as Drake and Tennessee Tech are 275 and 220, respectively, in the RPI right now. But we should still be Top 30 in the RPI going into the conference season. This is what happens when you play 9 of your first 10 games against teams in the Top 150 of the RPI. The only team not there was Coppin St at 315. We just need to get rid of those types of teams altogether. There are plenty of Top 150 RPI teams we could play that would still be an almost sure-fire victory but wouldn't weigh down our RPI.....

I think Marquette, Wichita State and Florida State will all look good by the end of the year. We should be 3-3 against top 100 RPI teams in the non conference when all is said and done. Our losses are to (RPI) #1 Iowa State, 11 Dayton and 51 Notre Dame. Wichita State is 49. Florida State is 84. And Marquette is 133. Heck, Western Illinois is 118.

You are incorrect. Iowa's RPI before the Iowa State game was 31. It was 29 after the game. This is per Real Time RPI...not the official RPI. It is currently 24. We did not move 50 spots by playing Iowa State.
Gotta respectfully disagree with ya Windsorhawk. If you go to www.realtimerpi.com rite now you will see that the Hawks rpi last week was 50 not 31 as you have noted. I had said in my original post that I believed the Hawks rpi was in the 75 to 80 range last week & you have corrected me,(I was wrong the Hawks rpi was 50 not 80 last week) well done! I do think that my point is still relevant though, and that is the fact that good strength of schedule in the non conference is important in the eyes of those who control your destiny on selection Sunday.

I think we are just splitting hairs here. I looked less than an hour before tipoff against Iowa State and it was 31. I looked about an hour after the game and it was 29. I have no reason to make this up. That's what it was. There is no question that SOS is extremely important and impacts RPI...definitely agree on this.

Like MLK I have a dream. Of a day when instead of dreaming about making the NCAAs (which we took for our birthright from 78-2001) we dream about deep NCAA runs. Happy Holidays everyone.

We make the NCAA this year. Last year we had 4 non conference losses, this year we will have 3. I think we win 11 or 12 conference games. The B1G is down this year, I think we even have a shot of finishing 3rd again like last year. We need to stay healthy though, and not lose anyone else since Jones is already gone for the year.

Dang good post here, still didn't give them enough credit tho.
