Greg Garmon is Gone

Unique skill set my ***. He couldnt catch, he ran timid, showed absolutely zero burst and could be tackled by a finger. Its no wonder Iowa was the only school to offer as a RB. His 4* grade was a joke. Take that high school ranking away and nobody would give 2 ***** Garmon was leaving.
you obviously never watched any of his videos, he either lined up on the slot as a WR or he lined up as a RB, he was a very good receiver as well as a RB, his skill set fit in with what GD wanted

It's on Ferentz because clearly the kid didn't fit the style of RB Iowa is designed to use. Most of Iowa's running game is designed to be between the tackles. Why Ferentz recruited a kid that was such a mismatch is puzzling.

Usually when Ferentz does this it is because he has plans to move them into another position. I would assume during the recruiting process Ferentz is up front with kids if this is his intention. It appears that wasn't the case with Garmon.

I don't think this is true at all. I think they have tried to bring in bigger backs, and smaller back to compliment each other. Simms, Wegher, Canzeri, Bullock, Garmon were all more slightly built. Cocker, McCall, Hampton, Robinson, Hill. were the more every down backs. The staff hasn't just recruited one type of RB, but has actually gotten a good mix, it just hasn't worked out.

The RB has just been a mess with attrition, and injuries. The sad part is we really could be very dangerous and deep without the injuries, off the field problems (not coaches fault) and transfers (on the coaches, to what extent is debatable).

I don't like losing player, especially RB. That said Wegher, Robinson, McCall, Hampton, Cocker all were better FR RB than Garmon. Not only that but Garmon couldn't even beat out a 3rd string FB, for the starting RB position......he saw the writing on the wall.

When was the last time KF released with out condition? Does he always do this, or is it a rare bird?

HGF said:Ultimately losing Garmon doesn't break Iowa; definitely doesn't help; biggest concern to me is lack of willingness to evolve/augment scheme

That is the biggest thing. Look at Wisky. Gordon is a similar player and they utilized the crap out of him on speed sweeps etc. Why not do that with Garmon. Too late now. At least Gordon saw the writing on the wall before he got to Iowa.

^^^ yeah well he also said he thought it would be JC. I cant wait to see him play again. He is fast and showed in a bowl game he is not afraid to run between tackles. Now he has had another year to gain some mass and some ball iq. Kid has speed and heart, I hope he stays.

Garmon would have been, at best, 4th string. I don't care what he was rated, he did not look a bit good. He would have been behind Weisman, Bullock, Canzeri and maybe Barkley Hill. This is not a big loss and may be a net gain because of his poor work ethic.

Got to love people trying to stir the pot with BS rumors, really get a clue this is a big loss, but hey KF is used to losing the best talents and using the junk he has left to get us to 4-8 season...the coach has GOT to go.

The only JOKE around here is your posts.

I would like to think that everyday Barta just drops his head on his deck, and says why did we sign KF to that contract.

This only hurts if Iowa RBs start dropping like flies again. I assume he would of been 4th on the depth chart if he doesn't move forward at all? Hill certainly looked more developed in preseason from what I remember. Also, if he doesn't want to work hard and earn it then get him out of here because there are plenty that do on this team..

but I am not surprised by how many are trashing Garmon, typical fan response to a kid that leaves.

i haven't seen that much trashing. The kid is mediocre. I wish he weren't leaving, but I don't think it will be a huge loss. That ain't trashing.

How the hell do you know? He was a true freshman and running plays that didn't exploit his skill set. So how do you know he is mediocre? The staff recruited him, the staff burned his redshirt, the staff misused him. I'd say the staff is mediocre there wasn't a giant pile of evidence saying that they are 8 grades below mediocre.

I saw his video at one of the all star games where he picked Iowa and he left a bad feeling with me. I saw him as a bit of a pre Madonna. I know a lot of them are but I wondered if he would bail being a big recruit not playing much on a bad team. Whatever. See ya. He was two years and much muscle away from being a good back for us. Bye...

Two points.

1) The biggest quote in the article was from his dad, that Ferentz "agreed it wasn't a good fit at Iowa". Was that about work ethic, skill set, off-field stuff, who knows? But it's significant.

2) People are being WAY too influenced by the recruiting ranking, with comments like "we lost our star RB"! Rankings are meaningful across larger groups of players ("OSU gets more talent than Indiana") but have a large standard deviation for individual players, and meaning NOTHING once they arrive on campus: they don't measure work ethic, confidence, developmental ceiling, ability to handle college life, etc. Pretty obvious Greg was nowhere near a 4-star Big Ten RB. Perhaps he would have become one, perhaps not.

As one poster said, had he been ranked 2-star, would you even care right now?

Good luck to Greg. Next man in.

We didn't need him anyway. Who needs 4-star recruits when you have a lock on the best service academy fullback transfers.

Because a man's background is more important than his actual performance...

And because recruiting rankings are infallible...

:confused::confused:
