Greg Garmon is Gone

My gawd, it appears KF is turning into the football version of Lickliter. By gawd we do not need players with break away speed, we need slow guys that can pound the ball for 4 yards!!!!!

5.1 yards, actually. Weisman's yards-per-carry ranked 5th among qualified Big Ten RB's, just 0.1 behind Hyde and The Great Montee Ball:

Carries Yds Y/C Long TD
1 James White, RB WIS 119 802 6.7 69 12
2 Venric Mark, RB NW 213 1310 6.2 80 11
3 Carlos Hyde, RB OSU 185 970 5.2 29 16
4 Montee Ball, RB WIS 332 1730 5.2 67 21
5 Mark Weisman, FB IOWA 159 815 5.1 44 8
6 Zach Zwinak, RB PSU 203 1000 4.9 50 6
7 Le'Veon Bell, RB MSU 350 1648 4.7 40 11
8 Akeem Shavers, RB PUR 167 778 4.7 40 6
9 Stephen Houston, RB IND 161 749 4.7 59 12
10 Donovonn Young, RB ILL 131 571 4.4 52 3
11 Donnell Kirkwood, RB MINN 199 849 4.3 38 5
12 Josh Ferguson, RB ILL 75 312 4.2 51 0

does Garmon leaving early hurt. NO next fall we will have
Weisman JR
Bullock JR
Dawson JR
Canzeri SO
Hill FR
Malloy FR
this will make it attractive to the 2014 recruits at RB, as they can come in RS and possibly start, as of now there will be just Canzeri, Hill and Malloy in front of them.
this might even help in getting Daniels to switch from BC to Iowa, and his listed time is 4.58 40, the same speed that Green was timed at, at the NFL combine

Who is the last transfer that actually was worth a crap on a decent FBS/BCS team? Dezman Moses at Tulane? He made an NFL team though not drafted. Anybody else?

It really comes down to the fact that the players KF gets to Iowa aren't that talented but do well in the system? Perhaps that is part of it. I don't know.

I think the comment that it wasn't a good fit is telling and there is an underlying element. I think kf wanted to move the kid to wr and utilize him more. He wants to be an rb and so a parting of ways was necessary.

I am of the conclusion that power or combo backs are the only type we should have. The guys that flourish in our system aren't the guy speed only backs. They are guys that can really take punishment. We have had some guys with speed do well but most of the time they are guys that also are tough as nails and strong.

It is overused but look at the patriots. They use power running and horizontal passing and vertical passing. We need to be the same.

Garmon would have been, at best, 4th string. I don't care what he was rated, he did not look a bit good. He would have been behind Weisman, Bullock, Canzeri and maybe Barkley Hill. This is not a big loss and may be a net gain because of his poor work ethic.
And not to mention he like the pipe. Maybe that has a little to do with work ethic.

I don't get why people are blaming Kurt for this. Garmon clearly wanted to play RB, we brought him in to play RB, he clearly wasn't a BoneG RB, so he's going to be a MAC RB instead.

As others have alluded to, because The Corporal has a long history of recruiting players that are highly ranked at their position with the unltimate intent to move them to another position. He gives them a chance to either succeed or fail (because, while they offer great athleticism, they usually are not "built" for that position, in his system.)

In that respect, I don't necessarily blame him for taking the same recruiting-gamble strategy that has paid dividends here and there over the years. However, it is up to him to recognize the character and wisdom of the recruit to realize that same vision and show the willingness to want to change positions.

Where I blame him is his complete misuse of Garmon's athleticism and speed by forcing him into the round-hole of his between-the-tackles rushing offense. Not because that's KF's "old" philosophy, but because, by bringing in The Gerg, he's demonstrated that his offense is transitioning to incorporate a more perimeter attack where speed guys can use space to make plays.

I'd bet Kurt saw that Garmon could certainly contribute in this "evolving" offense. Unfortunately, he suffered an identity crises (between old-school and what The Gerg is trying to implement) and set Garmon up for failure because he rarely put him in space to utilize his speed and athleticism. Instead, he forced him between the tackles and hoped he could make his own space.

It's idocy to blame Garmon for being what he is. Unfortunately, as we've watched more and more over the last 6 years, The Corporal's dogma restricts him from putting guys with legitimate skills, strengths and attributes in positions where they can maximize success and actually have opportunities to contribute with what they bring to the field.

I don't think this is true at all. I think they have tried to bring in bigger backs, and smaller back to compliment each other. Simms, Wegher, Canzeri, Bullock, Garmon were all more slightly built. Cocker, McCall, Hampton, Robinson, Hill. were the more every down backs. The staff hasn't just recruited one type of RB, but has actually gotten a good mix, it just hasn't worked out.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Iowa's run game has always been about moving the ball north/south. Garmon had the potential to be a threat with the bubble screen, but he was not the prototypical RB Iowa should be recruiting, IMHO.

If he had "speed" I never really saw it.

Because he was rarely put in space to maximize it. In typical dogmatic and myopic Corporal fashion, he was plugged into the same round hole of between-the-tackles rushing attack, even though it was contradictory to what his skills and strengths had to offer.

It's truly frustrating (I just get more and more disgusted each season) because the offense is supposedly "evolving" toward more speed / space attack, yet KF continues to mismanage and disservice his players' / potential play-makers' skills and attributes.

Nobody would care. His actual performance would suggest a 2 star is where he should have been rated. He showed nothing

Kind of like everyone of your posts..

He was a freshman who didn't get squat for carries and when he did the coaches didn't USE him to the best of his abilities, which falls directly on this clueless coaching staff.

Compare what we saw from Garmon this year compared to what we saw from Brandon Wehger as a frosh.
Think about the tendency in recent years for kids to transfer if they think they may be buried on the depth chart.
Consider if Greg would have ever been an adequate pass pro blocker or would have the durability to take a beating in the Big Ten.

On the other hand:

This will be used against Iowa in recruiting.
If Greg was too small, why did Iowa recruit him in the first place?
I would think he may have found a home as a slot in Davis' offensive scheme?
Regardless of the reason(s) for his transfer, this does not look good on paper for Hawk football.

Damn.

No worries, we just see it a little different. To me, not every back has to be a 25 carry a game type of back. Change of pace would be nice if we could ever keep RB on campus.

Don't disagree. I'd like to see a change of pace in the backfield too. I just don't see that style of play coming from the current coaching staff.
