Greg Garmon is Gone

I grew up wanting to pound the rock for Iowa. It is not an easy task. If he was asked to move (same as me) so be it. I am telling you, I grew up (since the age of 4) wanting to be Iowas RB and my hat is off to those that get the honor to do so. I am impressed and I dont say that often.

Thanks Kirk. Didn't need to watch football next season anyway. Best of luck with the top notch recruiting efforts you are known for.

I wasn't sure until immediately after reading this news but now I do know for sure. I don''t care any more what happens to the Iowa FB program.

We didn't need him anyway. Who needs 4-star recruits when you have a lock on the best service academy fullback transfers.

Seeing our star running back from 2011 transfer to a FCS school and cannot even win the starting job speaks volumes at how well they judge talent. Walk on fullbacks > 4 star runningbacks!

My gawd, it appears KF is turning into the football version of Lickliter. By gawd we do not need players with break away speed, we need slow guys that can pound the ball for 4 yards!!!!!

One question that I had is did they consider this guy for defensive back? He was a dang good safety in high school, anyone know if this was discussed/considered?

First off about Coker and him not being a starter, its not like he doesn't have to earn the job. So what he "was" the RB at Iowa, everyone else on that Stoney Brook team had their spot any team that would just throw him ahead of everyone else is pretty much saying you can work hard all you want but this guy was FBS so screw off. Think about how the almighty Kurt does things.....Now about Garmon sure his numbers as a freshman were not that great and he won't be missed until what happens that we all know will happen because it happens every ******* year. This is bad for the program but if I were him and perhaps had a future playing football I would move on too hes going to be used wrong at Iowa and there is no reason to stand on the sideline for a coach who's system you don't fit in or really have any respect for.

Garmon wanted to be a RB Iowa has a slurry of RB's in Wiseman, Bullock, and Canzeri. In the event that all of them go down is when Garmon would play. KF probably talked to him about switching positions and Greg didnt want to. Good luck to him at where ever he goes. IMO I would rather have a bruiser like Wiseman than the little speedy backs. The last speed back that was really good was Fred Russell. And he was running with probably the best line Iowa has ever seen.

I don't get why people are blaming Kurt for this. Garmon clearly wanted to play RB, we brought him in to play RB, he clearly wasn't a BoneG RB, so he's going to be a MAC RB instead.

This. He wasn't now at least. He had a WR build and if he really wants to play RB he needs to hit the gym A LOT.

I never like to see a kid leave the program but it isn't the end of the world and might even open the door for someone else.

Garmon would have been, at best, 4th string. I don't care what he was rated, he did not look a bit good. He would have been behind Weisman, Bullock, Canzeri and maybe Barkley Hill. This is not a big loss and may be a net gain because of his poor work ethic.

It's on Ferentz because clearly the kid didn't fit the style of RB Iowa is designed to use. Most of Iowa's running game is designed to be between the tackles. Why Ferentz recruited a kid that was such a mismatch is puzzling.

Usually when Ferentz does this it is because he has plans to move them into another position. I would assume during the recruiting process Ferentz is up front with kids if this is his intention. It appears that wasn't the case with Garmon.

My guess is Garmon thought he could come in and be the guy for Iowa, like so many other Freshman were. He just doesn't have the same style as those other guys. However, nobody should say the kid has no talent. He had a unique skill set that I thought would have been great in GD's system, but not KF's. I wish him luck, and now herby can salivate over that now open scholarship.

"Poor work ethic" - I assume you're just stirring the pot. There's no doubt that with those 4 running backs you listed on the team, he had no chance. It's not like any of them have missed significant playing time due to injuries already. At Iowa, a 4th stringer is almost guaranteed playing time - regardless of whether I agree on whether he could have been anything other than a 4th stringer.

Are you new to Iowa football? At least 2 of these RB's will either transfer, get injured long term, or be kicked off the team.

Unique skill set my ***. He couldnt catch, he ran timid, showed absolutely zero burst and could be tackled by a finger. Its no wonder Iowa was the only school to offer as a RB. His 4* grade was a joke. Take that high school ranking away and nobody would give 2 ***** Garmon was leaving.

I don't like to gossip so I am only going to say thing once! Don't be surprised if antoher RB transfers, that is the current rumor but, sssh!!!! You didn't hear that from me. Lets keep that on the down-low.

rather than blame KF, why not take a hard look at Erb, while he was the WR coach, Iowa had a problem keeping them. now that he is the RB coach Iowa can't keep the RB'S.
he might be a good recruiter, but as a position coach he leaves something to be desired.
Garmon could have used a year to develope physically and mature,
the rumor is he is looking at Colorado or Washington as schools to transfer to,
Iowa is recruiting Jones from Minnesota, Jackson from Illinois and McCaffery from Colorado in the 2014 class.
not to mention they still have a shot at Daniels.

That part is the coaches fault, you recruit kids to come to Iowa and play football not just play a specific position. The coaches are digging their own grave by recruiting like this. Why even bring players in like Derby or Garmon if they are not willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win? The best athletes coming out of high school usually play quarterback or runningback, just because they have success in high school at that position does not mean that success will cross over to playing major college football but perhaps they can be a productive DB or Linebacker.

Football is a team sport. We are now a legit 3 deep at RB. IF he was asked to try and move, but said no, that says something right there. There is no doubt he would have played if his ball iq is high enough, because he had some much needed speed.
I cant recall the last time KF worded it like that (anybody remember?), but it sounds like for what ever reason KF did not see him as a team player. This would shock me, because we all know most 4 and 5 star kids show a ton of humility.
