Greg Davis Retires

Few issues with Brian as OC

One, he's shown nothing of being able to call plays. He's coached the OL, and while they did better things the last two years run blocking, they were horrible with pass protection. Granted when the other team knows your plays, it's tougher on the players.

Two, if he takes over now he's in a position where if he doesn't produce better numbers, Kirk now has to make a choice to keep him on and have his son take a ton of crap, or tell him to move on to another job.

I just don't know if it's good for the program to have father and son that high up. I'm sure there are examples of it working at other programs

Yes, it worked out extremely well for the Ryan brothers in Buffalo. #sarcasm

If Brian truly was the run game coordinator....gotta admit that was pretty successful. So if he can keep that going at a fairly consistent click but then increase the passing game (that should be gravy given the dumpster fire it is) then it would be a positive move probably. And it's the only way for them to slide him to HC when Kirk is gone.

Would rather have David Raih
I wouldn't complain about that hire either. That dude would be a great fit on the staff too. I love his story about hounding Nuiesel till he gave him a job. But would going from Oline coach with the Packers to something short of OC somewhere else be a sideways or backwards jump? I'd love to get him just not so sure he'd come

Hurray.

Dont be surprised if Barta is still the AD that this is our next HC.

Havent read any of the posts. Sorry if someone else sadi this

If ferentz hires his boy it will be the same old song and dance. Kirk is the one who needs to if any significant change is to happen.
Whoever he hires it will be a similar offense. However, Brian both has experience in a more modern system from his time in the NFL, and from what I've gathered through listening to him and encounters with him, the gall to stand up to his old man and force him to make some changes.

um no he has ZERO EXP being a OC no way no how

Every offensive coordinator has to start somewhere. Brian's moved up as a part of New England and now at Iowa. He was in charge of the o line and running game and both excelled.

As far as I'm concerned, he's put his time in and he's earned his shot.

When it comes to this part of things I'd say KF is at the point in his career where he can say FU to anything criticism wise. Good or bad Brian would have to have thick skin so that's long been discussed at this point by now when he first hired him. I don't think having his kid in a hot seat would bother him. That's what coaching is there's no coddling at this level.

I think he's just the Asst OL coach so not sure it's that much different...

I'm not opposed to it being Brian if that ends up being the case. He's younger so there's a good chance he's less conservative, and being younger I would bet he's pretty plugged in to social media and realizes how upset Iowa fans were at our offense. He can come in and look amazing by shaking some things up. Finally, as Kirk's son he has more ability to stand up to his dad, if indeed Kirk is meddling with the offense. Kirk isn't going to fire his own son.

If his son struggles as the new OC...Kirk would hire another son to serve as co-offensive coordinator...

I better not be blowing jizz all over myself only to see KF hire Cam Cameron.

Well this was part of the Kirks plan. Now he can promote Brian to OC, the next step in the plan will happen in a couple of years when Kirk retires and he can hand off the captains hat to his kid.

Will the change help? Yeah sure maybe a little bit, but Davis was not the entire problem. The rest of the issue still sits with the low tier recruits we go after. Brian might have more imagination on offense but you can't teach speed and talent... you either have it or you don't.

Don't hire son, if he stinks dad will never fire him! Also, BF is a lineman not an offensive coordinator. He has zero experience in that position (not that experience helped Davis) and he's been around Iowa offense for too long. What new playbook will he bring with? Please NO to BF keep him where he e cels at OL coach

In coaching the Peter Principal is at fault all the time. Coaches do well in one area then get promoted to the next better spot to where they are unproven until they get to a position where they are over matched. Just because we have a successful O line coach does not mean he will be any good as O coordinator.

BF has a lot working against him in that area and his dad wouldn't ever be able to fire his own son. Please coach find a successful O coordinator maybe from a smaller school. One that has a proven track record as an OC.

Couldn't be more serious when I say, Who gives a shit? Ferentz is still the head coach and will put a governor on the OC's engine. Whether it's a ferrari or a Toyota it will run like a Ford Focus.
