Greg Davis passing scheme

It's terrible. JVB had 3,022 yards passing in 2011 under KOK and that is more than any Iowa QB since. Rudocks best year was 2,436 and CJ had 2,809 in 2015. Rudock did have 3,017 when he went to Michigan under a different OC. We need a new OC.

I recall that graphic sarcastically depicting Davis's 3rd down plays when he was at Texas where all patterns are short of the first down marker. I thought at the time it was a joke.

Our passing scheme might be the worst in college football. GD ruins quarterbacks. It's really hard to watch. Why would any respectable recruit want to come play in this offensive system??

James Vandenberg had a better year in 2011 under KOK than any QB so far under GD (by a pretty wide margin). If that doesn't prove the point I don't know what would. Our passing game is terrible and it's schematic. We were certainly good enough to beat Wiscy in every facet except the passing game.

“I don’t think it’s personnel or anything like that,” said McCarron, whose longest play Saturday was 11 yards. “We definitely have the guys who are capable. The plays are out there, we just need to finish. We’re not doing that on third down. That’s a big part of the game, keeping drives alive on third down.”

All you have to do is look at the passing chart for every game. While CJ may not be playing great, the pass routes/completions show how you can simply put 8-9 in the box and the safeties up. You stop Iowa's running game, you stop Iowa.

Hell, I would relish even seeing a post game passing chart that had 6-8 in INcompletions at 15-25 yards and 2-3 at 25+.

Almost every team you watch on Saturdays take 4-5 shots downfield, whether they have the players to do it or not.

Davis needs to go.

Personnel is part of it too. We have short wide receivers. Our wide receivers are also not very fast. That does not bode well for any kind of downfield passing game. This is not going to be a popular statement here but I do not think we have a receiver playing now that would start at ISU.

I have been harping on it since he got here. Square peg, round hole. Our passing game has been ranked in the 90's or worse 4 out of his 5 years and average less than 204 YPG in 4 out of his 5 years. Under KOK we were typically in the 50's and 60's in the country in passing yards at 220-230 YPG. Davis has had 1 year at about the KOK level and the rest have been miserable, including this year.

Before one gets into a tizzy over Davis' offensive schemes, remember who is waiting in the wings to block any 'new fangled' schemes...KF. KF blocked the spread offense with Davis. KF blocked inserting CJ as a starter even though CJ was more gifted than Jake. Too bad KF doesn't allow CJ to use his athleticism.

Last season was an outlier, though. KF thought his job was in jeopardy. He allowed his assistants to coach (which leads me to believe Phil Parker's preferred defensive scheme is pretty much what's being displayed). KF keeps Norm's antiquated defense with Phil Parker's defense (whom he blocks, too, I'm sure).

KF Blocked KOK when he wanted to run no-huddle. You see, it's not up to Davis or Phil or KOK as to the complicated, er, productive nature of schemes, its up to KF. Why does the offense and defense run approximately 5 basic plays per unit? KF.

It's not that Davis doesn't want to run other maybe more productive plays, it's that KF blocks him from running them.

What proof is there for KF blocking what GD, KOK, etc wants to run? This could just be a fairy tale. However, if it isn't true then both the DC and OC need to go.

It's Greg Davis but Kirk approves of him and the whole scheme. The buck should stop with him and he needs to have a change in philosophy pronto.
Buck stops with Davis or KF? Since the buck stops with KF on every other facet of Iowa football, why not the buck stops with KF with playcalling as well?

And it's more KF has major input in all facets of Iowa football not just the buck stops with KF.
Side note: My take on the legacy of KF? Autocratic. He has acolytes to carry out his policies.

I saw one of our receivers just run straight down the field and just stop and turn around and of course the defender was right on him. I watch youth league routes every Tuesday that are more effective than Iowa's routes.

UNI had a freshman QB go in last game and threw for something like 425 yards and passed to 10 different players. You tell me Iowa can't figure something out that is a little effective!!

Got it, so KF and KF alone is also responsible for 5 top 10 finishes and 2 conference championships and a 12-0 regular season.

If you are a playmaking speed WR, why would you come to Iowa? The staff has consistently shown they are not willing to put in the plays to utilize those types of players.

Anytime Kirk is up for an extension....the team plays well. I bet if you look at the years after signing those extentions, they aren't very good.
