Graduation Rates of Bowl Bound Teams

If this has been posted sorry, but provides a lot of information to digest. Our friends in Ames landed in the bottom 10 in the graduation of Americans of African decent. Iowa landed in the top 8 and had no dubious distinctions. Virginia Tech is the only team making a BCS bowl in the top ten and it was tied for that position. Iowa's opponent, Oklahoma is in second from the bottom in overall graduation rate, 48%.

You need to remember that with that statistic it may be slightly skewed. Iowa rarely has guys come out early to enter the draft. Almost all of them are 4-5 year guys. Then you have an Oklahoma at the bottom and more than likely a few of those school graduate and turnover players before they'd reach that point in "some" cases. Interesting stat none the less!!

Also, I was referring to the top 2 pts, not the bottom 4. Interesting to see iswho in the bottom for one of the categories.

As of 2009, the six-year graduation rate for the entire student body at the U of Iowa was 70%. Iowa's football team outperforms that by 13%. I wish people would keep things like that in mind when they complain about our football program.

Hmm, if the football team outperforms the student body in general, there's your answer. We're recruiting more "student"....than "athlete". ;-P

If I'm reading those stats correctly, only 40% of ISU's black players (I refuse to use the PC term "african-american") graduate? Looks like the Troy Davis plan is still in full force...despite several coaching changes.

A better comparison would be of regular students on some sort of scholarship vs athletes on scholarship, especially with the rising rates of tuition.

Something is screwy with the APR according to that article. OU has a higher APR than Iowa yet is significantly lower on all graduation rates.

APR has always been a crock like that. Josh Selby never went to class after the BB season at KU ended, yet didn't hurt their APR. He "worked something out" with his professors. What a sham! He was in Vegas the whole time prepping for the draft.

IDK why everyone gets all excited about a high graduation rate. Isn't football about winning. Why would a fan care if some guy on the football team ultimately graduates. That's his responsibility.

I could see why the coaches care but not the fans.

uh because they are supposed to be...wait for it..."Student" athletes?? You are what is wrong with the NCAA today.

If that's how you feel, why not just watch the NFL?

I'm an alum of the University of Iowa. I like cheering for a team that does their best to win games but doesn't cut corners or exploit students to do so. I care about the university, not just the football team.

If I were an alum at some place like Ohio State or Auburn, where they cut every corner they can and look the other way in terms of wrongdoing, I honestly wouldn't be interested in the football team at all.

You are watching the farm teams for the NFL. It's big business now remember? Everyone has to drop a few thousand bucks to get season tickets. You basically have seat licenses to buy season tickets. It's all about ticket revenue and tv money to the U of I.

Sure they are...that always makes me giggle when they emphasis that on some telecast. I saw plenty of them while I was there. The non-revenue sports have lots of students. Football and basketball...not so much.

Those who want to get a degree do and those who don't....wait for it...don't. I don't care if our left tackle goes to the NFL or gets a communications degree. It was fun to watch him while he was here.

And you sir are what is wrong with trying to win.

I agree completely. I could care less if they graduate, doesn't affect me. I'd rather see my quarterback throw 3 TD's than see he got an A on his last test. I don't watch football to care about how they're doing in the classroom, I watch to care about how they're performing on the field.

imported_UHawk, did you go to college?

Ha...that's a good one. IDK if I'm suppose to answer or not. Is that rhetorical? Is this where I puff out my chest and try and prove myself to you. If I say yes do you speculate which comm college? If I say no do you ridicule me? Let me know.

...Now back to the OP...not a referendum on me.

Ok let me ask you guys this. If you had kids would it be more important that they get an A on their test or if they threw 3 touchdowns? The answer to this question directly reflects your character and your IQ.

There aren't enough juniors leaving for the NFL to skew the numbers that much.
