Goodson

You’re right Kirk knows best he never plays older less talented players. I’m sure Goodson fumbles and misses blocks all week in practice.
Also, if it was all about speed and athleticism, Fant would have been drafted before Hock.

But isn't that what he is getting already? And they haven't all been junk time either.
It's been close to it. But most of his reps have been in garbage time I think. Now that we are past 4 games in and playing Michigan and the meat of our schedule I just would like to see no less then that and some more.

MO of KF....Stick with guys who have paid their dues? Always has and will most likely stay that way. Right or wrong KF is loyal
Yeah he certainly used to do that a lot it seemed. I think he is doing less of that recently though. You see guys like TJ a few yrs ago playing over veterans and Goodson now over IKM. Linderbaum at center. There's more examples too I'm sure. But he's opened up in that regard some quite a bit.

He was definitely in there for prime time against ISU and MTSU. It just also happens that he get junk time carries too as the 3rd stringer/true frosh.

If being the fastest/most athletic alone makes you the best football player, Tim Dodge would have been an all time legend.
There is a lot more that goes into being a good to great football player than that.

TGood is a heck of a player already, but he hasn't surpassed Sargent and Young yet, yet.
I didn’t ever say that being the fastest makes him the best, I just think by watching him that it’s obvious that he is a home run threat. I like Sargent too but I don’t see him doing much once we start playing decent teams.

Actually....

Here is what you said in the first post of yours I quoted:
Well we will find out if “it ain’t broke” Saturday. I think the kid should be the number 1 back just based on speed and talent. Sargent can come in on short yardage.

Dude give it a rest what is your fucking point? I think Goodson is our fastest and most athletic back and you don’t. You don’t need to make 20 posts in a thread about it. We get it you think Sargent is great.

His point is that the typical default of "fastest=best" has been pretty much thrown into the "myth" pile since, oh, 1970.

I’m not basing my opinion only on speed. What glaring deficiency do you see from Goodson that you don’t see in Sargent? The only thing I see is maybe size which until he has durability issues you can’t make that claim. So far he doesn’t miss blocks, doesn’t fumble, catches the ball well, is faster and shiftier than our other backs and seems to always be fired up. There have been several runs this year by both Sargent and Young that I think Goodson would’ve scored on. He has the Wadley vibe it’s not just speed.

Doesn't miss blocks? He is rarely if ever called on to block. If you're compare his blocking ability to Sargent, this was a waste of time.

To say he would have made more of various runs by Young and Sargent is nonsensical. He also might have made a lot less. Pure speculation, nothing more/nothing less.

Goodson has potential to have a higher ceiling.
As of right now, that's what it is.
Lot's of guys have potential.
The good news is that I don't know if one area is more responsible or if it's even, but our run game is getting better.
That says maybe we have the right coaches.

That said we are not even close to Wisconsin type running game. Still lots of work to do.
But we have potential.

They all bring different things to the table. I like them all. I wish Sargent was a step faster and maybe ran to daylight a little better. He tends to run into the back of his lineman sometimes. But I'm nitpicking because I do like him. He's a tough son of a gun you can depend on. Stanley sure does in the blocking department.
Young is a tough hard runner. He's not going to win any races either but I'm dang glad he's a Hawkeye.
Goodson has Wadley type of potential with this being day 1 for him. It took Wadley till yr 4 I think till coaches had some confidence in him. Heck it took him that long to get from 165ish to 185ish. Coaches were scared to play him much till he put a little weight on. Goodson is already at that 190 mark minus all the other stuff that kept Wadley from getting early PT.

I usually would have said RS a kid like him too but I've swung my vote on him and RBs like him. He can not only learn on the fly but the guy can help the team and be a flat out weapon. He's too valuable to not get significant reps. Again I'm not advocating he get bell cow reps like Shonn Greene did. I hope his JR yr he can get 20 touches a game or more. For now I'll be tickled with 10-14ish

Andre Ware former Heisman winner and NFL qb said Goodson has moves most 5 stars don't have and couldn't believe he was a 3 star player. I trust his judgment. Yes blocking is a work in progress, but he is getting better every game. Some of the other things he offers just can't be taught.

Exactly. He could be really good.
Andre was making those comments based on him being a freshman.
Experience helps get them better and he is getting that.

I'd like to point out that Jonathan Taylor and Montee Ball were both 3 star running backs. A little closer to home, Shonn Greene was also a 3 star. Of these, Jonathan Taylor was the most stupendous miss by the recruiting "experts" exploding to 1977 yards his freshman season.

Also, I'll take this opportunity to point out how dumb it is that Taylor is back this season. He should be a millionaire right now as he easily would have been a first rounder last season. Instead, he decided to 1. shorten his shelf life in the NFL by a year or more, 2. run the risk of injuring himself, and 3. allow scouts to nitpick his game. This all translates to more risk and less money. Dumb.

Dazzling point, except that this is only his 3rd year at Wisconsin- he wasn't eligible to go pro before.

Greene was a 4* by some, IIRC. And Greene's blocking was horrendous early in his career.

And frankly, we don't need Goodson to be a "stud" blocker a la Sargent. We just need for him NOT to be a liability in that department.
