Golden to Wisconsin?

Miami's Al Golden is emerging as the favorite to be hired by Wisconsin to fill their open football job.

Golden is operating under a cloud at Miami, where the Nevin Shapiro scandal resulting in probable NCAA violations is still pending.

Miami's president is Donna Shalala, who used to be the President of U. of Wisconsin.
The new AD at Nebraska was at Miami, and hired Golden to Miami. Before that,he was an assistant AD at Wisconsin.

Golden was at PSU at one point, and played for Paterno,as well as coached for him. PSU fans thought he was a good candidate for the PSU job at one point.

Solid hire, and could help Wisky recruit in Florida,if it happens.

Just updated on espn.com:

Miami head coach Al Golden continues to be on the radar for Wisconsin. His experience as a head coach along with his run first philosophy certainly fit the bill for the Badgers."Al Golden, a favorite of Barry Alvarez, has emerged heavily at Wisconsin. Source says Golden mulling a decision today," Pete Thamel of the New York Times tweeted.
Golden doesn't appear interested at the moment.
"Just got word that Al Golden is flattered by Alvarez's interest but staying at Miami," Thamel added.

It looks like they are going after top candidates, but have current Pitt OC and former Badger Joe Rudolph as a "fall-back".

Rudolph will, indeed, be the next HC at Wisky....can't wait to see the meltdown on Becky's boards. This will bode well for the Hawks.

they need a young up and commer. They can't afford to pay Kirk Ferentz type dollars in Wisconsin.

For everyone in teh "FIRE KURT NOW!" crowd, keep this in mind. When you fire a coach, you had better have someone better locked and loaded. If Wisconsin can't find anyone decent to come up there, Garta will have even moar trouble. We'll probably end up paying Brain 3 million a year after being rejected by three other coordinators.

Golden knows that Wisconsin fans have unrealistic expectations and that he's not going to be able to fulfill them with Urban in the same division. This coaching search is proving how smart Bret was to get out when he did.

Waiting to see who Wisconsin lands before I write this column ;)

The next coach won't be a big name hire, just like KF wasn't, or Fran wasn't. The jihadic wing of HN will rejoice when KF leaves, and then they will melt down when they see what we get to replace him......

Went over to see what the folks on Bucky's boards were saying. They're at the plane tracking stage. BA's in Ohio interviewing Tressel...or someone for the VB job. Hilarious stuff that we would NEVER do!

Laugh at Wisconsin in this chase if you choose but it's likely a forebearer of what Iowa would face as well if not even more challenging.......whenever that time comes.

Bielema wasn't a widely sought name when he was selected. Unless you're among the elite you're not likely picking among the big names or the hottest up and comers. Alvarez has done well with his hires and I would bet he will do a good job again. Only the years will tell.

The difference between Iowa and Wisconsin, is that Iowa has alumni coaching all over the country and when that job comes open, one of them will jump at it. Wisconsin doesnt have that. You start with the Stoops brothers, Bielema, Leavitt, Diaco, Mccarney, etc.........Not saying that any of them would take it or it would even be offered to some, but Iowa does have that edge when Ferentz is gone.

I also think Alvarez ****** off a lot of former Wisconsin coaches and alumni when he named Bielema the HC. That was hardly a smooth transition.

The problem, or course, is that Bielema, Bob Stoops, and Diaco will almost certainly never come here. McCarney, Leavitt, and Mike Stoops are hardly a step up from Kurt. The only viable candidate out of this list is Mark Stoops, only because we don't know if he sucks or not.
