George Fant to decide Monday?

Don't they make seven footers anymore? 6'6" has a lickish feeling to it. Of course not too many seven footers will be able to run the floor in a sprint mentality.

Wasn't Brunner around 6'6"-6'7"? I think he did plenty well banging around inside for us. As long as you are strong enough a 6'7 guy can hold his own inside against a 6'8"-6'9" guy. I don't see it as a problem, if he is physical and Fran wants him, I would be happy to get him.

Remember Clay Hargrave. He was about 6'6" and led the Big Ten in rebounding in 1978, the year he averaged 9.9 RPG for the Hawks. It can rarely be done.

If he's only 6'6" then WKU might be better suited for him. I love his video but the B10 is a different ball game. To contradict myself, sometimes size is completely overrated. He certainly seems skilled for a big strong kid. I wouldn't bet against him in the B10, just making a point.

Size didn't keep Fizer from kickin' a$$ at the PF spot, in the Big12...I'm not saying that just because you're a Clone, but that's who popped into my head when I saw Fant's video...it just worked out nicely that you are a Clone!:p

Fizer?

He was something like 6"8" and 230 to 240 lbs. He ad some size, don't kid yourself.

Fizer was an absolute beast. But he was definitely closer to 6'6" than 6'8" (and probably closer to 260 than 240). The crazy thing was that Stevie Johnson was playing PF next to him, and he was only like 6'4", then they started 3 guards under 6'3". I know this is an Iowa forum so I won't go to crazy in my praise for that team, but if you were a basketball fan, they were fun to watch. They definitely showed you that size isn't the be all end all.

I remember Gene Keady saying once when talking about big men... "everybody knows that size is overrated". Of course he was talking in relative terms, but it't more about wing span, foot work, and strength.

I hope we can get him...

Clay was still around Iowa City a few years ago, might still be. He was still playing at Lee Community Center...not unusual, as so were Brad Lohaus & Les Jepsen among others. And for an old-timer, no one could outboard him.

True, he led the BT in rebounding..before he got hurt. But he didn't come close to 6'6. At most 6-4, more likely 6'3. And if there is a parallel to this kid Fant, it most likely is that Hargrave wasn't so much a leaper as that he had terrific hands & the strength to come away with any ball he got his hands on.
A sort of miniature Charles Barkley on the boards.

Perhaps another apt comparison would by James Winter.

That was an impressive team to watch (as long as you we're talking on the court not the classroom-sorry had to :) ). I think of that team and the Illinois team that ran through the B10 with Marcus Liberty and a bunch of 6'5"ish guys when people talk about size.

It's nice to have, but give me a team of skilled ballers 6'7" and under any day of the week and a good coach can win with them.

Good comparison. Fant looked very good in his video but there's some reason why he has few offers.

I know you're a Clown, but for God's sake please use your brain before you speak. Fant has offers from: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Penn State, Western Kentucky, Akron, Arkansas, Boston College, Cleveland State, Colorado State, Murray State, Ohio, Seton Hall and UTEP. Has drawn interest from: Cincinnati, Purdue, South Carolina and USC.

Fant will announce at 1 PM today.

Kravish's commit to CAL will help Iowa's case.
However, don't count out Penn State or W Kentucky. The Hilltoppers would allow him to stay closer to home.

I would be surprised if it's Iowa, but you never know.

Maybe it is because I am 40, but I just don't see where it would be fun to place out the free hats I was given on recruiting trips onto a table, and have family, friends, media watch as I act all ridiculous about this one... no this one... this one... that one... AH HA THIS ONE!!! Seems so ridiculous... but other kids must say... man that was AWESOME... I SO thought you were gonna pick that USC hat... you fooled me man! I know RIGHT!!! OK, fun is over... get back to school!

I actually liked the way Oglesby did it. No hats, just came out and thanked everyone, then picked his school.

I did too. Although it was a bit too long I did like the way he explained why he chose Iowa and what his expectations were. Having him playing for the Hawkeyes will only help to keep future in state recruits. I was GLAD to see he wasn't playing the shell game with the hats. Everytime I see that I think (unfairly or not) the recruit is full of himself, not very intelligent, and lacks education.

I guess when you are 17 and have all these adults and websites pimping you, you get to feel like you are more important than what you are. It has to be depressing for the majority of them to show up at college after signing and not receive the fanfare and ride the pine after all the hoopla prior to their arrival. I bet coaches have named this time frame. "You know, Mike is just going through his Freshman Fall, He will be over it by Winter."

Kids these days can reach lots of people with social media and they find out quickly that the most outrageous things get the biggest response. We created the technology, it is as much our fault as theirs. Do you realize that less than 30% of parents set limits on their kids us of digital technology?
