Gavin Williams

Despite being one of the smallest population bases to recruit from, iowa consistently is one of the top 25 schools in revenue. I'm not at all saying Iowa should be recruiting at the level of OSU, Michigan, PSU, or even MSU. I'm talking about being in the top half of the conference in recruiting. I'm not a fan of those that say "poor iowa, they can't get better players because they are iowa." I know recruiting isn't a piece of cake but why should we be happy with being out recruited by Nebraska, Maryland or Minnesota.

This is not at all trying to downplay the commitment of Gavin Williams. I think he seems to be a great recruiting win for the Hawks and I think the future is bright for our RBs. I'd just like to see a handful more recruiting wins each year and I don't think that's unreasonable to ask for.
Recruits do apparantly. Look outside TODAY around the state. That kid from Florida, Alabama, Texas, California....he doesnt want to go outside in this. Few would. Why would you? The southern and west coast schools can all offer top 25 teams and bowl games and national tv and the NFL. More than Iowa can most times. So, why this? Everyone says someone should be able to do it. No one says why. Kids arent idiots. Assuming all top 25 teams are top 25 for a reason...good staff....tradition....bowl games...NFL path....why Iowa? Snow? Kids from warm places love snow? Even if you dont play games in it, its here December through March/April.

Tell me why recruiting rankings are important after the 5* kids are off the board? Its clear that after the top 10-15 schools, its pretty much even in results. Are Iowa's 15 kids rated 3* that far behind another team's 10 4* players? Looks like they arent. Its the Epenesa type players that you want. The lines between 3/4 stars are very blurred.

Well when they start using that revenue to pay players then you’ll have a good point. But they are not so Iowa has to go the development route and hope to find diamonds in the tough.

Not hard to win all of the time when you have most of the top players in the state(see Nick Saban.) I would love to see all of these top tier coaching “GODs”,at any level, have success with a school with 2-3 star players. Hell what Kirk has done at Iowa is amazing..

Saban took over a mediocre MSU program that improved every year he was there. In his fourth year they finished 5th or 6th in the final AP poll if I remember correctly. If he had stayed there long term, the spartans would have become a perennial power.
Well, you’re memory is sort of right.

Coach Wilson could win with 3 good players on either side of the ball. He's very talented. He eats, sleeps and dreams football. I've coached against him, spent time around him, he's the real deal. Sure, Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach werent good coaches either i suppose. Or Saban. I guess no one is good who develops takent and uses it well.
Professional teams are on an equal playing field(not MLB) with the salary cap. Not only coaching but drafting and free agent signings are a skill alone. College is suppose to be an equal playing fields. So many scholarship players, rules and etc. But we all know that many colleges cheat the system to get better players. High school athletics should generally be on the same playing field but is so far off that and getting worse. The advantages private schools have over public is unreal. And if ya think having access to all the top players in the state and surrounding state doesn’t help private school coaches ya might want to get out of fantasy land. Pretty sure majority of public high school coaches give their time, money and there all to there program. In fact more as they work with kids in their boundary and without a lot of outside money like private schools get

More 9/10 win seasons isn't unrealistic, but we just won 9 games last year and you and others are acting like it was a terrible season. We've won 12, 8, 8, 9 games the past 4 seasons. It's hard to tell that you and others aren't expecting national championships when no matter what happens you take a negative stance.

I keep hearing the 7-5 number rather frequently, when Iowa has won below 8 games just once in the last six years.(five years ago) But I guess the argument is Iowa's record is functionally equivalent to 7-5 because they play in the weak Big Ten West, play crappy Loser State each year, and pad their record against fcs teams like NDSU.

Add to that, the talent Iowa develops and puts into the NFL on a yearly basis now seems to count for little. We all know Iowa needs to bring in talent from out of state to win, that's been the case since the 1930's. But lets totally disparage in state development while we are at it.

I get it. The current coaching staff has its weaknesses and faults. But some of you have decided to cast them down with the losers, and not give an iota of credit for what they are currently doing.

So they land a talented recruit, and all some of you can do is launch into another bitch about recruiting.

There is some truth in this but travel through parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and there is a lot to like about a safe and friendly Midwestern state like little Ole Iowa.

It is more important that a program be "known" for producing NFL ready players. Iowa is getting better at this but needs to use and coach and shall we say, use, that talent better to get better.

I'll bet you are right. But NO ONE knows a thing about Iowa. Couldnt we assume that they think scary cornfields filled with grand wizards and banjo playing hicks?

I dont disagree with you. It doesnt mean that a coach with all of the riches isnt still a great coach. Wilson is a great coach with a filthy war chest.

So we sign a 3 star kid, from IOWA, who a few P5 schools wanted, and some of you are going apeshit.
This should not be a reason our fan base goes apeshit.

I meant 9/10 regular season wins, but I suspect you knew that.

Expecting a program, a great brand, like Iowa Football to win more 9/10 REGULAR season game is not unrealistic.
Excuse me, and others like me, for being positive about what Iowa Football can accomplish.

LOL, if this same kid had committed to ISU, Nebraska or Michigan you would be the first one on here ROASTING the Iowa coaching staff for letting the only good player from Iowa get away.

Da Haters gotta Hate no matter if we get a kid or lose a kid.

Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Miami and most of Southeastern campus sites are as nice as Iowa City. Maybe not "better", but to a Southeastern kid, who may never have left his home state, Iowa City isn't "mind-blowing". Great town and campus? Sure. But if you've grown up in Immokalee, FL or Waycross, GA, chances are you don't "hanker" for snow or cold.

I'm certainly not hating on Iowa signing him.

Last 3 seasons regular season: 7, 7, and 8 wins. Does that look familiar? It's Kirk's overall average.

LOL. Only 4 P5 teams have averaged 10 wins a year in the regular season over the last 5 years (Bama, Clemson, Ohio St. and Oklahoma). If you think Iowa should just "expect" to be one of the top 5 teams in all of college football, you are not being as "realistic" at you think.

I'm certainly not hating on Iowa signing him.

Sure you are, lecturing others for being happy we got him, and down playing him because he is from "Iowa".
Also nobody was going "apeshit" over getting this kid. He is a High School Jr. right now, and he has a long ways to go before he ever even contributes at Iowa (if he even ultimately signs with Iowa). Some of us are happy though that we are now winning recruiting battles vs the likes of Nebraska and Michigan both of whom are top 20 recruiting schools.
