Gatens-Zero Points in 2nd half

Actually, I think it was zero points in the last 30 minutes. Gatens, with rare exceptions, shows you don't want Iowa kids on the team.

The best Iowa teams I've seen are the '68, '70, '79, '80 (before Lester got hurt) & Davis' first team.

What is the the one constant in all in all those teams?

There was one and only one Iowa kid that played in the normal rotation on all those teams.

True, there are exceptions to the rule, Barnes, LaFerntz, Lorenzen, etc. But until Tom Davis came alomg, Iowa never lost an in-state recruit that was a quality recruit

Research the above teams that I have mentioned. Except for Lorenzen, the in-state player was the worst player in the normal rotation.

I think the world of Fran Mccaffery, he reminds me much Lute.

How bad is Iowa basketball? Iowa has not won a Big Ten basketball regular season title, since before Hayden coached his first game at Iowa.

I am one of the fortunate few, I have seen each of the last four Big Ten regular season champions play in person.

Huh? Do you just state that Gatens is the same player as every other basketball player in the state of Iowa? Because Gatens didn't score in the second half, you don't want anyone else from the State he lived in?

I'll just leave it at that.

Spot on!!

Fran does need to recruit nationally and if there is ever more than one Iowa HS starter in any given year (with the few exceptions of an Oliver, Davis or a Korver, Hinrich, Collison year ) we will not win the Big Ten Regular Season Title.

Sadly enough, Gatens is just not quick enough or confident enough to separate or get a quick release. He is as tentative as a moose on a highway. Same with May.

If Fran and his staff change that, they are the real deal. It will be interesting to see the change next year, if any. This team lost a number of games purely due to no outside threat.

This is stupid too. Our best team this past decade started four Iowans: Horner, Henderson, Haluska, and Brunner. None of those guys were even elite high school recruits. We just need to recruit the top 150 talent that comes out of this state.

Not to rip on those guys, but they won exactly the amount of NCAA tournament games as this current team....none. Also, only appeared in two tournament games. With that said, they a couple of them were rated in the top 150. Actually I think Horner, Brunner and Haluska were top 150 recruits. I could be wrong though.

I understand what some are saying here though. I think Iowa's best chances for success are to have national recruits and supplement an Iowa player here and there.

Can't remember who defended gatens the second half. Appling? Whoever it was, he really locked him down.
Yes, Gatens had a rough year, but to say we don't want any Iowa kids is kind of naive. Are you saying we don't want Josh Oglesby??

Whoopps my BAD.

I forgot about 06 with Horner, Haluska, Brunner and Henderson.

My God I loved that year.

Except they didn't win the Big Ten Regular season title and completely flamed out in the NCAA's (The ongoing Alford debacles and Lickliter years addled my mind for the single successful regular Big Ten season in 10 years)

I did really enjoy the Big Ten Tourney Title that year and since noted that none of those boys are playing in the NBA. Adam was the only on that got a sniff and unfortunately due to injury never made a roster after year one.

Point being we need at least 1 or 2 (preferably 3) NBA players on the team in order to win a regular season Big Ten Title. You don't normally get that from Iowa recruits in any given "average" year for Iowa high school BB players.

So a low populated state doesn't have that many good recruits after you throw out the best ones.... shocking!!

All I can say is after seeing Basabe and Cartwright this year, I have full faith in FM's evaluation of talent.
A vast improvement over the previous regime.

Just went back and re-read entire thread and must take back "Spot on" to CHawk and his diss of Matt Gatens.

I love Matt Gatens and believe he could be playing on a Big Ten Champ BB team.

We always want the best Iowa BB player in any given year. Some years we may want 2 or 3. Unfortunately in any given year we may only allow the opportunity for the Iowa kids, given their talent. to walk-on given and the recruiting landscape across the country. I repeat always with the opportunity to "earn" the scholly once on campus.

Pretty simple in my opinion. Does Roy Williams get hung up on having NC kids on the team? Does Bill Self concern himself with loading up on KS talent? We don't play in the Missouri Valley or Horizon League and this is the level most Iowa kids should be playing at. We aren't going to get the elite Iowa kids and frankly, the rest just don't impress me as having big ten capabilities.

Good post.... but how do we get the elite Iowa kid? It would be nice to get one once in awhile.

Good question. I agree it would be nice, but how many years before this state produces another Harrison Barnes? I say the bar has to be set there. Offer some kids a shot to walk on, but no more wasting scholies on kids that are markedly less athletic than everyone else in the big ten.

Sorry, Columbushawk. Shon Morris.

Went to NW. Was an elite B10 player. Hails from Ankeny or Urbandale. You are wrong unless you want to argue he wasn't sought after. Personally, I don't recall his name before he was at NW. But I wasn't a D1 coach, either.

Ricky Davis is the most athletic Hawkeye BB player I've ever seen.

Harrison Barnes was top recruit in the nation last year and will be a lottery pick.

Kirk Hinrich (sp?) was the best white American BB player on the face of the Earth for the last few years (Kevin Love is now) and is a player most NBA teams would love to have.

Raef LaFrentz was a great college player at a major program.

Nick Collison was a great college player at a major program.

Marcus Paige is going to an elite program.

These guys are all from Iowa. Iowa simply couldn't get 5 of them and couldn't keep the other one very long.

I agree that Iowa needs to recruit nationally but I don't think the problem is lack of talented kids from Iowa. Its Iowa coaches not being able to recruit elite players from Iowa.

Matt Gatens is a very nice player. I don't understand why people have such an issue with that.

The way to get the elite Iowa player who comes along once every 10 yrs is to make an elite program out of out-of-state players.

I'm all for things that are Iowa but in this situation there just isn't enough talent in-state to save a drowning program. Getting a top 5 kid from another state is better than getting a top 10 kid from Iowa any day.

Look at players like Washpun who isn't good enough to play big time ball but some on here want Fran to offer the kid. We need the BEST available talent available regardless of where they are from.

I believe Iowa's interest in Hubbard is an indication that Josh Oglesby is a project, who won't help for a few years (due to a lack of strength).
