Game Story: Resilient Hawkeyes Pull It Out in Ames

It was Iowa State. You think they are a good team? They aren't. They had to go to overtime to beat UNI, and they suck. If you think that is a charged up atmosphere wait until we go to Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska. Brian called an awful game, and we were completely outcoached the entire game. ISU just happened to screw up more than we did. KF played for the 4th quarter? He's not that smart. He plays not to lose if you haven't noticed for the last 20 years. His clock management has, and always will suck. We escaped an awful ISU team. We play like this in the conference and we will be lucky to be .500.
The list of things in ISUs favor yesterday was huge, Iowa played ugly, and they still won. Don’t blame everyone else if you can’t find happiness out of that.

I'm not sure you would call this a "GREAT" win but it was great to win given the setup going into the game and conditions during the game. ISU had a big advantage having possession of the football after the storm delays. It gave their OC time to setup that half back option pass. The offense had to settle for four field goals which is a credit to the ISU defense. If Iowa had punched in two of those drives the games outcome would not have been in doubt.

The Iowa defensive backfield wasn't perfect but Purdy's play was damn good other than his fumble. To go into the game without 4 members of the defensive backfield and limit ISU to two TD''s is commendable.

On to Middle Tennessee State in two weeks.

I would call the entire situation surrounding the Iowa State game a natural disaster to be overcome. Averting a total disaster is a "GREAT" win.

I was a little confused by the flow of this thread, it seemed like I was missing some comments. But then it struck me, "I bet Iowa made enough mistakes in this one for Caddy to come back on and spew his usual stuff." I blocked his trolling act quite awhile ago, so didn't see it. I unblocked the page, and sure enough, there he was, in all his glory.

Why don't you all do yourselves a favor. Just block him, he so obviously is a troll. Then he can spend all that time coming on here and typing up some bait to get people riled up, and it will all be for naught as no one will see that garbage.

Oh and I forgot about the 3rd and long to the tight end where he went out of bounds to stop the clock before the last lucky punt. What was that as far as clock mgmt? YOu can run the ball and punt if need be after running the clock down to about 50 seconds.
Good lord.

I’m not a BF defender by any stretch of the imagination, but that play was 100% Wieting’s fault, dum dum.

A first down wins the game, highest percentage pass play in the playbook. Wieting was out of position and let his momentum take him out of bounds, when he should have been squared to the ball and hit the deck after the catch. I’m all for criticizing dumb play calls but that particular one wasn’t dumb. Wieting didn’t know where he was on the field and it wasn’t BF’s fault.

I agree, i would have liked to see a roll out to the wide side of the field with either a running back or a full back running in front. If they are covered up just keep it and go down. If its wide open throw it.

Yep. That would have been a perfect time for a KOK special. A bootleg or little waggle action to the wide side of the field with Wieting running a drag route mirroring Stanley.

Why they ran an out route to the short side of the field is beyond me.

Iowa won so it is all good.:)

Great win. Honestly had we lost I would have been like oh well. Weird game with the weather then a trick play and busted coverage for the two clown scores. We were very green in the secondary. Great time for a bye week to get healthy. I can’t wait to get Brents back.

Other thoughts:
-Linderbaum is the real deal
-WRs had another good day I thought
-Kickers were huge
-Not a fan of our “raider” pass rush look. It’s just not working
-Runningbacks looked good when they got chances

I actually thought Iowa’s RB’s and O-line looked good and ran very well in Iowa state’s supposed elite best in ISU history d line/front 7. They averaged over 4 yards a carry.

Also..they didn’t get tons of pressure on Stanley. A couple hurries, but nothing wild.

Got your typical "supposed" Iowa fans complaining like crazy over a good win on the road against a good team. Derp, derp, derp, such has become the norm around here, I'm not sure why this even surprises me any longer.

Caddy is that left lane driver who won't move over on the interstate.

He is that bag of chips that gets hung up in the vending machine.

He is that mother in law who pretends to be asleep in the back seat as she attempts to overhear conversations

He is that remote control that falls deeper in the crack in the reclining mechanism the more you try to fish it out.

He is that euchre partner who always trump's your ace because he isn't paying attention.

He is that nephew who double dips his chips at the Mexican restaurant.

Winning a game like that, with all the injuries and adversity, could bond a team tighter than ever and propel them to even greater heights.

Yet some on here would rather bitch and complain. It didn't look like a great coaching job with a couple clock management issues. And some have questioned the decision to go for field goals. But our staff did a good job of coaching the game in front of them. We played it close to the vest and waited for the Clones to make the big mistake.

It wasn't pretty, but truth be told Hayden win more games like that than people will care to remember. Especially in the eighties. This game reminded me of an ugly win in Arizona, 15-14 or something like that, when Hayden decided on Chuck Long as his starting quarterback once and for all.

Agreed. The only real pressure they got was on a couple of those slow developing play actions.

Iowa is still missing big A Jackson as well and that was Barnwart’s first game back so it’s possible this offensive line group could continue to get even better.

His trolling act is like a car wreck you can't turn away from. And I can pretty much tell who has him on ignore by the people who never respond to his comments.

In the end he is too easy and too much fun to pick on. And I don't think it's an act. He's not some petulant child, he's in his forties or fifties.

He reminds me of my neighbor up the street who bitches about Cubs games, snow on his satellite dish, bird shit on his deck, spiders in his hastas, his dog, the rain that starts before he can finish mowing his lawn, anything and everything. When other neighbors get together for potlucks and a few beverages we swap stories of the latest adventures of our neighbor all the time.

It wasn’t raucous, especially after the rain delays. Everybody was absolutely exhausted by the end.

Weird game due to that. Ultimately really disappointing as an Iowa State fan.

You should be used to disappointment by now, as an Iowa State

There’s a whole lotta triggerable things in that post

Yes, resilient hawk players win despite KF's horrendous clock management and some questionable pass calls on 3 and 1. Rob when are you and other reporters going to ask KF questions about why they aren't using timeouts to get more plays off late in games and at the half.

Two games in a row and it has been happening for years. The hawks are supposed to be able to run the ball but I was surprised on 4th and a foot on the first drive the decision was FG. And Stanley is really showing he can plow on a QB sneak. I think on the second drive the hawks had 2nd or third and 1 and it was play action where Nate turned his back and got sacked.

But time management could of and easily should have lost this game. Crazy

Hats off to the players for being so gritty and determined.
Well Said! Rest and getting Players 100% Next.Hawk Players Waay Tough as Always. Reece coaching Helper? Heard he was there. Will Need Him. Great Hawk Win. Like 'Lightning' in a Bottle.

17-14, 1982. Chuck Long was a redshirt freshman. Started the season with two loses to no. 7 Nebraska, 7-42, and Iowa State, 7-19. Ended up 6-2 in the conference with a win in the Peach Bowl.
