Game Story: Resilient Hawkeyes Pull It Out in Ames

I think before we criticize the coaches for questionable play calling and clock management, we have to know that was an extremely charged up atmosphere with a very aggressive team, and there was a high chance in the first half that we could have lost it and gotten blown out.

So in the first half on 4th down, the smart play is to take the points. If they stop us on 4th down that is even more momentum for them. At the end of the first half, make sure at worst we go into half 7-6. If we burn timeouts and give them too much time on the clock, we risk going in 10-6, 10-3 or eve 14-3. KF played for the fourth quarter this entire game.

I dont fault the throw on 3rd down on that last possession either, a first down wins it. Weiting should not have run out of bounds of course, it was a bad route. But at that point the coaches were trying to win it.

Most of that was smart football tonight.

They should have ran that route to the wide side of the field to either give the receiver more room or at worst Stanley to keep it and stay in bounds. Don’t have a problem with the call just the execution

I agree, i would have liked to see a roll out to the wide side of the field with either a running back or a full back running in front. If they are covered up just keep it and go down. If its wide open throw it.

Oh and I forgot about the 3rd and long to the tight end where he went out of bounds to stop the clock before the last lucky punt. What was that as far as clock mgmt? YOu can run the ball and punt if need be after running the clock down to about 50 seconds.

You’re right on the raider giving a different look. Just don’t feel like the guys get a good get off. I was high on Golston last year but man he’s been non existent over there. Miss Anthony Nelson more than most would have guessed.

I didn’t mind BFs play calling except for that fourth and inches play action. That should have been an auto sneak. Sloppy field and weird game with the delays. Both teams moved the ball between the 20s just stalled when they got close. Smith could have made that catch.
Smith should have made that catch!

It was Iowa State. You think they are a good team? They aren't. They had to go to overtime to beat UNI, and they suck. If you think that is a charged up atmosphere wait until we go to Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska. Brian called an awful game, and we were completely outcoached the entire game. ISU just happened to screw up more than we did. KF played for the 4th quarter? He's not that smart. He plays not to lose if you haven't noticed for the last 20 years. His clock management has, and always will suck. We escaped an awful ISU team. We play like this in the conference and we will be lucky to be .500.

You referred to Iowa as "we"? Do us all a favor and drop that, because the real "we" dont want you.

Yeah he should have, but Stanley needs to hit him in the chest. The ball was high, and it was the one spot the DB could reach it to knock it away. He had all day to make that throw, so no excuse for it being high at all. His ball placement is terrible, always has been, always will be. He's just happy to get it near the receiver, forget about yards after catch.

This is a pretty sensible take. Some of the conservative choices were still aggravating in the moment, but in this series, a win is a win. I’ll take the way the Hawks played over Michigan last week or Pedo State today.

Isn’t Smith’s whole allure that Stanley is supposed to be able to chuck the ball up there and have Smith come down with it more often than not?

I said it in the game thread. On the road, hostile environment, you get a chance to get points early, you take the points. Getting shut out on that drive would have jacked up Jack Trice higher than it already was. And while you can't automatically assume transitories, that early FG ended up providing the final margin of victory.

Definitely aggravating, I agree. I want us to just throat stomp out opponents out of the gate so I can relax and enjoy the game, but they all knew and were prepared for a game down to the wire.

I agree 100%. We had to take the early punches and not go down. That early in the game we couldnt have won it at that point but we certainly could have lost it.

You're completely clueless. You call the mistakes from a coach that has been here for 20 years smart football? We are supposed to have this amazing offensive line, but we can't go for it on 4th down for 1 foot with all the momentum early in the game? The play call to the tight end should have never been called period. You don't run anything with even a chance it could go out of bounds. Yeah smart football. A smart coach doesn't even take a chance there. The only thing you don't want is to go out of bounds, and we do it. What about taking the delay of game before the punt? Smart football right? Letting the clock completely run out in the first half because why? Oh you don't want the ISU offense to get the ball back? We have this unreal defensive line, and Epenesa, what's the problem? Come back and tell me how smart this coaching staff is when we do something like this at Michigan or Wisconsin.

Yeah but it looked like Smith was between strides or just couldnt get his feet under him to go high and get it. The ball had some zip so not much time to adjust there.

Nate was high on a few throws to wide open guys which he does sometimes. he looks like he opens up his shoulders too much and the ball sails as there is one throw especially where he did this when he averted pressure, rolled to his left and threw back to the right

We are 3-0 and we havent played Michigan or Wisconsin yet. So we will see.

I still understand why you are still saying we though. Nobody wants you here and your insight is insignificant and petty.

We did the same thing last year (going for it on fourth down early in the Wisconsin game) that you said was the wrong thing to do and that it cost us the game. Now you're saying taking the three points was the wrong thing to do. You're completely clueless. And the more Stanley wins the more it sends a burr up your backside.
