Future B1G Non-Con Scheduling

Have to say I agree with Rittenberg regarding the Iowa St. rivalry. If it has to go the way of the dodo, so be it. Right now, I'm hard-pressed to find any non-conference game through the 2019 schedule that really helps Iowa's chances of making the playoff. I just think it's a bad look for Iowa, especially while many of the schools in the conference are scheduling up going forward.

I believe we are starting to see a lot of reasons why big teams and especially Iowa need to go with 6 home games a year and then schedule 12 decent teams each year.

I like the Iowa State rivalry. 2 schools in the same state that are both in P5 conferences should play each other. It makes sense.

The games that need to go are FCS teams like UNI or Missouri State. There is absolutely no good reason 2 teams at different scholarship levels should be playing in games that count. If you wanted to add a 13th game that counted as a pre-season game, then you can play UNI in a pre-season game, that could also count as a 7th home game.

Also games against the MAC and other G5 conferences need to be cut to a minimum.

Ideal
Idea schedule would be 10 conference games, iowa state, and 1 other non-conference game against a P5 conference school. Maybe once every 4 years schedule a decent MAC or G5 school.

I would love, love, love this type of schedule, IF everyone else were to have it as well. If we did this, and other teams kept current schedule, we would be doomed. There is a reason that the SEC plays 8 conference games, 1 tough non con matchup, and then 3 cupcakes. Cause there is no reason to make it any harder. You think Alabama will be kept out of the playoffs, because of a "weak" schedule? No way, no how, and they have a weaker schedule than Iowa does.

Well, Iowa has to be realistic. What are the chances of Iowa making the Playoffs? Maybe Iowa should do it because thats what the fans want. A decent schedule against decent teams.

I think the real issue is giving up a 7th home game, which may not be a problem if attendance keeps declining.

I'm with Guffus. Not having the 7th home game every few years should not be that big of a deal. Would some potential opponents agree to a "home/home" series with their "home" game at a nearby metro area? Colorado at Mile High in Denver? KU or KSU in KC? Mizzou in St Louis? A state of Texas team in Dallas or San Antonio? I dunno, but it seems worth checking out. It'd upgrade Iowa's schedule and would be like a bowl trip for Hawk fans.

Definitely time to toughen up the schedule.

One tune-up--perhaps ISU.

Two legit BCS schools, one good and one average. (I know that predicting who will be good and who won't is difficult due to the scheduling window--base it on history and trends, I guess.)

9 conference games.

I for one support the idea of having a series with Missouri State. I would drop the games with UNI favor of teams such as Missouri State as a season opener warm up game. UNI is in about the same market as Iowa as far as media goes. So there is less additional revenue and exposure.

With smaller schools in markets such as in Missouri, Ohio, Texas and others Iowa gains exposure to more potential recruits and television markets without having to do a home and home and still allowing a chance for a warm up.

Giving up the 7th home game is an absolutely terrible idea. Aside from the $, the fans would be really peed off, an rightfully so.

I think its obvious, IWA does not see its self as a national contender. Nothing they do suggests aspiration beyond MOBT.

I agree drop the ISU series. Pick up a more quality Power 5 team on the schedule and there you have it.

At this point I would be quite happy to play someone other than Iowa State every once in a while, or maybe half the time.

If that were true, then why has attendance been down? Fans are peed off because Iowa plays crappy opponents that are not even in its own classification. Play quality opponents. The $ will be balanced out by additional tv revenue and sold out games.

Why not just schedule the local high school team or Grinell College? That would make Iowa even more more money based on your theory.

Attendance has been an issue at many universities, its a national problem. Ticket sales are better this year than the past few. I would love to see some better opponents but Iowa doesn't seem to feel that way.

Snort. The ISU game won't be the deciding factor on Iowa making the CFP or not.

I do agree that downward pressure on ticket sales and an overall change in mindset may result in Iowa going to 6 home games occasionally.

Kirk said on his radio show again last night that he still thinks the B1G is eventually going to 10 games. I think he is the only person as having that opinion.

someone asked KF about this last night on his radio show. He said they like the schedule the way it is to help them get ready for the Big Ten.

There is always the possibility of a 9th conference game on a neutral field with the addition of the B1G Championship Game. If you look at Michigan State last year they didn't have an overly great win during the regular season and lost to Notre Dame on the road but still made it into the Rose Bowl and would have made it into the playoff if it existed. The championship game alone will be key to getting a B1G team in the playoff.

Delany has this saying....the Big Ten schedule after 2016 is going 1910.....1- meaning 1 Power 5 opponent in the non-conference, then 9 is for 9 Big Ten games, 1 is for the conference title game, and 0 is for 0 FBS games.....that is the league standard after 2016.

Iowa meets this standard by playing ISU, 9 Big Ten games, and maybe zero FBS schools.

Delany thinks that any team that emerges as champ of the Big Ten with 10 power 5 games, will make the playoff.

I noticed today, on the eve of the final Michigan-ND game in that storied series, OSU announces a home and away for 2022-23 with ND...OSU and ND love to tweak Michigan, I guess.

I am all for the Big Ten going to 10 games, and Iowa playing ISU every other year.....so they can find one more interesting home and away series with a team like ND.

I doubt ND would do a HaH with Iowa. It'd be nice if they did. Look for more Pitt/Ariz/ArSU, if there is a spot on the schedule for it.

If only Iowa St would step up their game and consistently, we wouldn't have to worry about this.

Yepper, SOS is going to come into play when selecting the 4 teams.
