French update

I don't really care if he is or not. As I've stated many times, this isn't a big time instate recruit that it will really hurt on if we miss out on him (like Wegher or Davis were or Blythe was this year)

I think that a better way to put what you're trying to get at is that French, while a high ceiling guy when it comes to potential, is also very much a developmental player. Given how much we're having to replace at particular positions, it might be better to land guys who are a little bit more "plug and play." I think that we can probably leave it at that ... no sour grapes necessary.

This is the second time I've been told I have sour grapes about French. I don't- I have no ill-will toward the guy and if he's a hawk great, I wouldn't consider it a waste of a scholarship. But what I am saying is that for all the hype he's not one of those kids I see and say, "man i'd love to see him in black and gold" or "if we get him that would be a great get". To me he's just another recruit that if he goes Iowa's way great, if he goes to Oregon or ND that's fine. No sour grapes. Just my honest opinion

I'm also starting to see tweets that it is not going to be Iowa. Too bad if true. Was looking forward to watching him develop.

I just get a kick out of all these so called experts on this board that can evaluate talent. Also, by no means am I an expert either but I would like to keep good talent in the state.

I call Notre Dame. Just from snippets I've seen, he and his family has seemed impressed with the prestige of that program throughout the whole process.

said this on the other thread, but worth repeating here too:
i'd like our chances if KF was the type to blow smoke up a recruits bum, but he probably gave it to him straight and that probably wasn't what he and his dad wanted to hear. seems like his dad is pretty involved and wants to make sure his son gets a lot of attention, which he pretty much won't get at Iowa.

Yea he is going to run people over and run high. He's HUGE!!!! He could have an impact at linebacker for us.

Oh yeah because Davis and Wegher are really lighting the world on fire right now.

Wegher was a good one last year, and that's why I thought he was a "need" for Iowa. I think Davis has shown he has skills but is waiting for his time. I still think anytime there is a receiver in the state of Iowa that is 6'3" and CAN catch the ball he is a need (see Darboh). French just isn't in that category for me. Maybe he is for you and that is fine. And before you say French can develop and be great like I think Davis can, and maybe that is true, but Davis played receiver for years, not 1 like French (who caught 11 passes for 110 yards or something). That's my view of it.

Wegher is living with his undoing, but Davis has already burned through half his eligibility and we still don't really know what we have there. Gotta love the use (misuse?) of redshirts...

Good grief, Davis is in his second year in the program. Greenway and Dallas Clark didn't do anything until their 3rd year either.

Im not bad talking either player. The poster stated that those two were cant miss prospects and they really have not done anything that they would have been qualified as cant miss so far.

Wegher was a don't miss. Very productive as a freshman- you can't deny that. Other than the leaving part he was good. Davis, I get your argument, but here is mine. He was playing as a freshman so he could get experience so next year he can be very productive (btw can't miss is a terrible term, but I think he'll live up to expectations). Now, the way I see French is it will be 2 or 3 years until he is able to "get experience" the way that Davis did as a freshman. I too would have liked to see more Davis, but we didn't oh well. Also for those who are concerned with wasting 2 years. I'm not because he's had 2 years to prep for 2 years of productivity. That's great at Iowa, it shows recruits freshman can play, and we'll get new recruits every year. I don't mind playing freshman and "burning" shirts.

At the risk of hijacking the thread...

I don't mind burning shirts either, but make it count. What did Keenan Davis do last year that he couldn't have waited a year to do? Sure, he got game experience, got to block on a few running plays, and caught a whopping 4 balls. Was that worth burning the shirt? Why not give him a redshirt year, make him work hard in practice (especially blocking), and then bring him in this year as a RS Fresh to do what he did this year? Then you're preparing him 2 years for 3 years of productivity.

If you are going to burn the redshirt, burn it. Don't just singe (sp?) the frayed edges of the sleeve.
