Look, dude, the guys on this board represent some of the biggest die hard jackal a-hole fans the Hawkeyes have and I have not heard anyone say they would dog on Fran for missing the game. If George Bush's daughter got sick on September 13, 2001, yeah, sorry Dubya, your family time is gonna get cut short, but this is so far removed from that. No one is gonna think Fran has to be at that game. If Fran goes and we lose, people will second guess whether he should have been there, but no one in our fan base would second guess the guy if he elected to stay home with his family. It's one of those "soft benefits" of coaching at a place like Iowa rather than UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc.

Let me spell it out a little clearer.

Having a in-the-public-eye job (and yes I do) I understand why Fran has committed to being in Dayton. With my kid under the knife (at the ripe age of 13 months) I worked the day before, the day after and a bit the day of. I understand, likely better than you, why Fran is making the commitment he is making.

I don't question it. I understand it.

I also know what his guts are doing right now — and, to address the OP — why he looks tired and run down. Health issues like these don't come on overnight. The McCaffery family has been on the journey for much longer than any of us know. It has worn on Fran (the parent) the entire time — not just the past few days. That affects Fran the coach — and it should.

Your post actually makes my point pretty well — you state if he is there (and all indication is he will be) people will second guess if he should have been — especially if Iowa loses.

He is there because of his commitment. He is there because he is "the man." He is there because he believes it to be what is best for both him and the team. Take that second guessing and stuff it. He is making a calculated decision and sacrifice.
 
Fran has reasons.

This team's reasons for sucking is purely in their own head however and has nothing to do with Fran's family.

I didn't like the vibe I saw either.

Really hope they players get angry. Calm is not the answer right now.

Understand what you're getting at, but the players getting angry is the last thing i want at this point. I actually want the exact opposite. I want them to take a step back and remember how fun the game should be and how much fun they were having while winning. The emotion is gone and unfortunately I don't think getting angry is the answer.

I've never seen a team play tighter the last few weeks. In my opinion I think they need to realize that they are playing a game and there are things much more important in life then a game. They need to do nothing more than go out there and have fun, which is something that hasn't happened the past 8 games. I think if this team can get the weight of the world off their shoulders and get back to having fun it'll help the shots start dropping and they'll be able to start reacting and stop thinking/over thinking things.
 
This team's problem is that there is no leadership amongst the players. Where's the 'players only' meeting been? If there was any, they'd go to McCaffrey and say, "Coach, we've got this handled....go be with your family/son until the coast is clear."

Yeah I posted this in other threads.

Are they stressed or not having fun? maybe but they are lethargic, zombie like.

They just walk around droopy style.

Sorry I think they need to get angry. Especially a couple players.
 
Did anyone consider that coaching that game is what his son wants? Just a thought.
 
I thought I read somewhere along the line that a biopsy of the tumor on Patrick's thyroid was found to NOT be malignant.
Hope that is correct. Obviously has to be removed, and I know millions of people take thyroid replacement meds, if it comes to that.

I can't imagine the strain of having to deal with a child's illness to this point at the same time you are trying to attain something worthy that requires almost all of your intensity and focus. No wonder the man looks exhausted and drawn.

Having Patrick come through this well and the Hawks bring home that first victory would go a long way to putting some joy back in everyone's lives!

Don't be sorry, because I definitely know where your coming from. My line of thinking about having fun is simply from a tightness standpoint. The team definitely seems way to tight and needs to losen up. Either way they definitely need to find some sort of emotion and lose the robotic demeanor that's plague this team the past few weeks.

The team ain't doing much different than they have done all year. It's just that the opposition has adjusted and exploited White's tendency to get lost in zone defense and taken away the easy transition buckets that were our bread and butter early in the season.

Billy Taylor has not gotten enough credit for jumping up quick and holding Meyer back. Just look at Kyle in that pic! That's a man with bad intentions. If Taylor isn't there, who knows what happens, probably another Malice in the Palace type scenario with a full blown brawl including the fans.

I'd say the personal family medical issue has a lot to do with his sulleness.
 
Serious question to the OP... Do you have children? If you do, I'm surprised you don't get it. If you don't, I wouldn't expect you to get it.
