Fran...

I understand why Fran does the whole 3 fouls sit thing but Gesell was on the pine for way to long. He has most of the leadership with the ball. You have to play him in a tight game like that.

"saving" a guy who's in foul trouble is among the top falacies in sports. (right up there with "icing" a kicker) If he's truly that valuable then you need him in the game. Benching him...is the equivalent of fouling him out in advance.

Take him out for a few minutes...to settle him down and talk about the fouling...yeah. But sitting him for a long time as if you're saving him for some magical moment is foolishness. He contributes nothing. And the longer he sits, the less likely he is to step into the game flow when you DO play him.

If you're worried about him fouling out...what the hell is the difference whether it happens early in the second half or with 4 minutes to go. It's going to happen in the same number of "on court minutes" either way. If you play him... at least he has a chance to make an impact (and he may NOT get in further foul trouble). Benching him...is essentially waving the white flag.

Bo Ryan has been a hugely successful B10 coach for many years. Fran is proving to be in waaayy over his head at the B10 level. Huge difference.

Are you sure? Cause it seems like he's doing pretty well. Iowa has improved in talent, recruiting, wins...every year since he's been here. We are a legit top 20 team(maybe even top 15) in arguably the best league, top to bottom, in the country.

I would say Fran is proving that you are waaaaay over your head at the HN level.

Lol. Well played, sir. I think hawkfan33's post was a little over-the-top. I was saying when I originally started this thread that a little doubt had up crept on me about some of Fran's decision-making during games. Welp, it's gone now and I'm back to gladly eat some crow for ever questioning him. :)

Welp, now my confidence in you is at an all-time low, Fran. Just when I thought you had figured out that McCabe should only be getting about 10 min. a game you play him almost 20 today. I know Basabe was out, but still. Split up those minutes between some other guys. 19 min., 5 fouls, 0 points, stuffed at least once for Zach.

Have you not figured out yet that Marble is not a clutch player AT ALL? He turns it over more often than not. Give somebody else an opportunity at the end, PLEASE! Oh, and he's shooting .414 from the field this season now. Not from 3-point range.

To be clear, I'm blaming Fran for putting these guys in these situations. He should have it figured out by now that Marble and McCabe are not good in the situations outlined above.

PLEASE make me look like a fool for doubting you, because at this point I'm coming out of my denial that we can win a close one.

There are coaches out there that believe in self-correction. At some point during a game, players have to adjust, like it or not, a lot of Iowa's players don't.

Coaches should be able to figure out whether the players can self correct and if they can't then it is on the coach to help them correct and adjust.

Interesting comment from a former opponent against Fran's UNC-Greensboro team had this to say when I asked him about Fran:

@EliteStephen82: That level yes he was. In the BIG i'm kinda behind on him. He had a tendency back then to make poor decisions down the stretch

Or ... I dont know ... realize "adjustment" isnt happening on his own or with coaching & the best solution is to go a different direction?

Hmmm...just a wacky thot.
